WTH!! Teagan is having some breakthrough acid issues. I wanted them to up her dose (she is on 15mg a day and I want 30mg a day), they said no. They think we should just take her off the Prevacid and put her on Pepcid. Anyone else think this is a step in the WRONG direction!!!!!!! Could we put her on Pepcid AND Prevacid. HELP!!! They were also talking about Reglan, but we are not sure. What do you all think???
Thanks!SarahAugust 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm #55206hellbenntKeymasterkeep w/ the prevacid.
you can give pepcid also- give four hours seperate from PPI-here’s the latest info- look for the posts about pepcid: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11447August 8, 2008 at 3:46 pm #55209AnonymousInactiveYes, Laura is right. Before we got a high dose of Prevacid for Nicholas (30mg), we did both. We used Pepcid Complete berry chewables. I ended up mashing 1/2 a tablet in a small bowl with a spoon. I added 3-4mls of water and dissolved the Pepcid. Then I sucked the liquid up with an oral syringe and gave it to Nicholas. Here was our Prevacid/Pepcid schedule (approximate times):
6:30am- 7.5 mg Prevacid3:30pm- 15mg Prevacid7:30pm- 1/2 tab PepcidNicholas was on 22.5mg of Prevacid daily. I originally was giving it 3x a day, but that’s a PITA to do b/c of the empty stomach and 30 min. before meals rules. Plus, I wanted him to be as acid-free as I could get him for bedtime.August 8, 2008 at 3:53 pm #55210AnonymousInactiveI told her we REFUSE to take her off the prevacid. She will not give Pepcid with the Prevacid so we dropped it. She is sending her for a gastric emptying study and if she does indeed have DGE she will put her on Reglan. SO we will see. We have to increase her cereal to 2 tsp /oz (it is already like sludge) and pretty much sit and wait.
August 8, 2008 at 4:35 pm #55212AnonymousInactiveIf she does have DGE, why won’t they try erythromycin first. It’s side effects don’t seem as “scary” as reglan. My DD has been on e-mycin for about 2 weeks now and so far so good. She’s still struggling with her bowel movements, but I think there’s something else going on there. BUT without the e-mycin she wouldn’t go everyday and she’d be worse off. Anyways, just a thought.
August 8, 2008 at 5:05 pm #55213hellbenntKeymasteris this a ped or ped GI? seems like if it’s your ped, that it might be time to get to a ped GI. why are you thickening again? I would think that’d go against DGE? if she even has that?
what I would do , and I am not you!!! just me
is try taking her off of the thickening (what happens?), giving the prevacid, go buy pepcid over the counter, add that in & give it 4 hours seperate from the prevacid and see what happens. in the meantime, I’d get to a ped GI and look into another ped…
August 8, 2008 at 5:12 pm #55214AnonymousInactiveShe sees a Ped GI and her Ped. The Ped GI won’t prescribe meds to babies under 1, so we only have her Ped to work with. The thickening helps with the reflux so we’ll see if adding more makes it better, it definitely gets worse without the cereal! The Peds in our area are limited and we seem to have one of the most liberal ones around.
August 9, 2008 at 1:28 pm #55224AnonymousInactiveI was also going to suggest just buying the Pepcid OTC. The Pepcid Complete is what you want. Works really well.
August 10, 2008 at 10:00 pm #55235AnonymousInactiveAnother option is to find a family doctor. They treat adults and children every day with reflux. When we finally went to our family doctor he was interested in what marci-kids was doing. He read the email Dr. Phillips sent me and dosed my son according to that. There was a plus to this because he now doses all children according to marci-kids. When we tried to wean Colton the first time we went to the store and bought the pepcid otc. We had to go back on Zegerid the without the pepcid otc we would have been lost.
