Infantreflux.org | Starting Prevacid, supposed to stop Zantac?

Ok-went to new specialist today and adored him. However, he said to stop Zantac immediately and start Prevacid immediately. Started her this morning as soon as we got home with her full daily dose (15 mg for an 11 week old/12.5 lb-er) on a kinda empty tummy. Did screw up and feed her about 30 mins afterwards and THEN read the dosage instructions-oops.

But this is my conundrum-do I stop the Zantac as prescribed, or keep going until the Prevacid kicks in? We were on .9 of Zantac 3x daily….anyone go through this?

This is the mistake I made- to stop the Zantac when we got the Prevacid script. The Prevacid can take up to 2 weeks to have full effect, so its as if my little guy was on meds at all. It was not a happy time at all around our house.

I am not sure on the dosing, so hopefully someone else will chime in on that. If I were you, I would continue to give the Zantac. You need to make sure to give the Zantac and Prevacid at least 4 hours apart as to not interact with each other.

Glad you got the Prevacid. It has been a wonder drug for us.

I answered this question in your other post. Also i would split the 15 mg into 7.5 mg in a.m. and pm to help with better coverage as babies metabolize meds quicker than adults.

I would split your prevacid dose & do 7.5 in am, 7.5 in pm. I would give 1.5mL of zantac in early afternoon (but 4hrs before pm prevacid dose) & then do another 1.5mL in middle of the night if you need to. 3mL total zantac/day is the max dose for a 10lb baby so that will be fine.

I also made the HUGE MISTAKE of stopping the zantac. baby shrieked/howled so much he lost his voice! so pitiful!

what form of prevacid?

We’re on the delayed release solutabs-15mg tabs, but he wants me doing halfsies to start. However, he also made it a point to tell me that you can’t OD on this stuff, so don’t worry about it if I go over the dosage…not that he recommended that I start giving her prevacid chasers after every boobie…..;)
