My three year old has reflux that seems to be aggravated by vitamins. My husband (his father) has the same issue so has never taken them. They both have horrible diets and I really wish that at least they could suppliment with vitamins. My three year old is on Prevacid but it hasn’t seemed to improve his eating or growth. I wanted to see if anyone has any advice about the vitamins. Are there any that are recommended for children with reflux?

You could try a hypoallergenic multivitamin that is free of gluten, dairy, artificial colors, etc. and see if it he would tolerate it. If not, then perhaps it’s one of the actual vitamin/minerals that’s aggravating the reflux. Kirkman’s is a company that makes a lot of hypoallergenic vitamins and supplements, and we get a lot of stuff from them. Here is the one I was thinking of:

I’ve tried those without color, dairy, etc. and they still have problems. Its very frustrating since they both have poor diets.

I have a 17 month old who has obvious problems with dairy (eczema & diarrhea) and soy (diarrhea). I’m still nursing him and wondering if I’ll EVER be able to wean. He prefers nursing over food and still takes in probably about 50% of his calories from it. Do you happen to have any advice on weaning?

I nursed Brodie until 20mo. We weaned VERY slowly. What worked best was offering him milk (you could do rice milk!) in addition to nursing that way he wasn’t forced to transition. Then, once he warmed up to more food & milk (around 15mo) we started dropping feedings (we had 6 to drop). Also, I started only nursing him in specific places (our bed & the glider in his room). We dropped 1 nursing every mth or so. He kept the last one for about 3 mths but eventually dropped the last 2-3 on his own.Sorry if that’s confusing… the point is: gradual & if you’re ready to wean then set limits (only nurse in certain places).erinntx2008-07-30 21:58:47

I have him down to nursing before naps, bedtime and first thing in the morning and he’ll only nurse in his room anyways (he’s too busy). Problem is that he’s so used to nursing before bed that he cries and cries if I don’t let him. He never took a pacifier so maybe that is a problem too. It helps me to hear you weaned yours to food, and juice though. I worry that he doesn’t take in enough calories from food at this point so I need to work on that somehow.
Thanks again!December 27, 2008 at 5:43 pm #59888AnonymousInactiveI got down to nursing my son who was allergic to dairy, soy and eggs just at bedtime when he was a little over 2. He was drinking rice milk at that point and still drinks it till this day- he is 5 and has outgrown his allergies. Then I just shortened the amount of time he was allowed to nurse each night and snuggled and rocked and eventually we just snuggled and rocked. Reading books was always a part of his bedtime routine as well. I guess if none of that works and he is in a bed, you could take his rocker out of his room and snuggle in bed with him instead and see if he will adapt. I was surprised how well he weaned too. It was probably harder for me than him!
