July 28, 2008 at 5:44 pm #54627AnonymousInactiveOk, so I know we are obsessed w/ Evan’s diapers here @ our house so I apologize .For the past 3 days Evan’s gone all night w/o poop, but seems to be straining b/w 4-6am.He then has a huge poop & it’s yellow . Then, the 2 diapers after that are also yellow. All 3 of the yellow diapers each day have been negative for blood w/ hemoccults. But around 12-1pm they start turning light green (& a bit more mucousy) & stay that way until bedtime (w/ the hemoccults being positive for blood)… then repeat cycle. So, my question is: if something in my diet it causing this when would I have eaten it?! Breakfast? If not my diet then any ideas? He’s getting the capsules w/ pureed pears @ around 8:30 am & 8 pm.It’s just so frustrating b/c all 3 days have started great (diaper-wise) & then it just changes. Thanks!July 28, 2008 at 6:20 pm #54629AnonymousInactive
Ok, I’m not sure about the diaper issue, but here are my thoughts. I believe that it takes about 3-4 hours for what you eat to make it into your breastmilk, so if the green starts in the afternoon, then I would say, it’s a breakfast thing. What do you generally eat for breakfast?
Also, one thing I noticed with my OAL, was that you have TONS more foremilk in the morning, so he is getting more of that in the AM, which could contribute to the green diapers too. As the day goes on, the more hindmilk he will tend to get. MAybe this is what is going on?July 28, 2008 at 7:19 pm #54637AnonymousInactiveThat’s good to know about the 3-4 hrs. Is that the general time for most foods?! Also, how long before they leave your system (besides milk/soy)?
I’ve been eating rice cereal w/ rice milk. That’s the only rice I have during the day (I’ve been trying to limit it to only bkfst). So that could definitely be it. Although we saw no change the wk I went w/o eating any rice… but who knows b/c something changed @ some point for the better (no more stinky gas, less mucous, etc) & I’m not sure what the contributing factor was.About the OAL & foremilk – I thought about that too & that could certainly be going on. But a couple things… since he’s sleeping w/ me most of the night he’s nursing pretty much constantly (well, not constantly, but definitely every 1-2 hrs) so there’s not a huge foremilk build-up like I often had w/ Brodie. Also, would that make a difference w/ the blood in his stool/hemoccults results?July 28, 2008 at 8:47 pm #54644AnonymousInactiveErin
I am not a pro at breast feeding but I think Naomi is right that it takes 3-4 hrs for what you ate to enter the milk supply. It is odd that his diapers change mid day I have never heard of that. I would be interested to find out what the cause is. Sorry I am not of much help.
July 28, 2008 at 8:51 pm #54645AnonymousInactiveI wondered if you nursed him throughout the night or not. I do think you tend to have more foremilk (and thus more lactose??) in the mornings. But, you’re probably right that yours isn’t as imbalanced as it would be if he weren’t eating so often. And, no, it shouldn’t make a difference as far as the blood goes, I wouldn’t think.
I guess the only thing to do would be to try going a few days eating a different breakfast. I know there’s not much else out there, but maybe some turkey bacon? Oatmeal was the first thing I added back to my diet after being on TED for so long. Maybe give that a try?Oh, and as far as getting foods out of your system.. I don’t really know.. I would think that the more protein loaded they are, the longer they stay in your system. Most things, I would think would be out in a day or two. But, remember that’s out of your system, not accounting for how long it takes to clear his system then.Bensmama2008-07-28 20:54:20
July 28, 2008 at 9:39 pm #54659AnonymousInactiveYeah, I’ll try a few days w/o rice @ all. I’m also not eating turkey so my selection is very limited, but I’ll be fine. For the wk I cut rice out I ate a sweet potato or hash browns for bkfst.
Do you think the pears could be hurting his system?Like I said he doesn’t poop @ all at night now & then squirms & strains from 4-6 am. I wonder if he needs Miralax for either the pear &/or Prevacid but don’t want to do anything until after the scopes on Thursday. He’s on probiotics & upon starting them is when the stinky gas/poops stopped.July 29, 2008 at 9:23 am #54677AnonymousInactiveHe’s not constipated though, right? The grunting and straining, in our case anyway, was from tummy pain, not poo, because his stools were always soft. If his stools are still soft, then I wouldn’t do the Miralax.
As for pears… anything’s possible, I guess, but I can’t think of a single time since I’ve been on this board when a mom reported trouble with pears. there’s always a first for everything though.Hopefully the scopes will give you some answers.I’m glad to hear that the probiotics seem to be helping. They really help Benjamin too.July 29, 2008 at 9:18 pm #54729AnonymousInactiveNo, he’s not constipated, just straining & squirmy most of the day from tummy pain I think.
So, today I didn’t have any rice. The diapers were yellow all day… until 6pm, then they turned light green again (for the last 2).It’s so odd. They all smell very sweet (finally!) – yellow & green – so who knows. Also, they were all + for blood w/ the hemoccults today so it’s confusing.Hopefully we will get answers on Thursday. Thanks for responding.
July 29, 2008 at 11:38 pm #54738AnonymousInactiveErin, just curious about you’re testing for hemocults. Are you having to bring all the diapers in to the doctor/lab for testing, or do you have some way of testing them at home? I’ve always wondered about trying this for my kids, since my ped doesn’t seem to think anything is a big deal, yet Paige still can’t eat hardly anything at 20 months old, and a recent blood test shows that Ben is boarder-line anemic… If there is a way I could test at home I would be really interested!
I really hope you get some answers on Thursday – we’ll be thinking about you guys!MFPIx22008-07-29 23:39:14
July 30, 2008 at 9:09 am #54749AnonymousInactiveErin, how confusing! I’m stumped, that’s for sure. The only other thing I can think of would maybe be a vitamin? Are you taking prenatals or some other type of daily vitamin? Sometimes they have additives in them like soy or even milk. That’s the only other thing I can think of.
Hopefully the scopes will give you some answers today. Let us knowJuly 30, 2008 at 2:37 pm #54781AnonymousInactiveMy dh is in medical supply sales so he just orders the hemoccults for us & we develop @ home. Both our ped & ped GI know we do this & support it. It’s super easy. The brand we use is the namebrand that most office’s use.I did some searching & found a site that has the same brand we use (Hemoccult Sensa by Beckman Coulter) & you can buy them direct from them for around $82 for a pack of 100.Hope that helps! -
