We took Carson to Dr Ivor Hill at Brenner Childrens Hospital in Winston Salem when he was 3 months old. It took six weeks to get in. Everyone at the hospital was great except for Dr. Hill. We explained Carsons reflux and swallowing issues, and had copies of all previous tests with us. Dr Hill told us reflux is not a big deal and causes no pain. If we simply had to medicate our son he would rx something to make OUR lives easier. He ordered a swallow study and we spent the night so Carson could have the test the next AM. We asked for any tests to be done on this trip, as we were 5 hours away.He said no problem. The test showed aspiration on thin liquids and we were sent home with a script for Prevacid solutabs. No directions or precautions about the aspiration. He didn’t order any blood work or any allergy panels for reflux. LUCKY for my son I was a nurse many years ago!
Carson reacted to the aspertame and didn’t sleep for 6 days. When I called to ask him to change to a different type of Prevacid, his nurse said he would need to have a 24 hour PH probe before ANY changes could be made.I was so disgusted, I just needed prevacid in a different form for long enough to find a competant GI to treat Carson. Of course I didn’t tell her this. I explained the situation to her about the fuel, hotel, time off work, and food costs and the fact we were just there the week before. She said Dr. Hill would not make any changes until he had the PH probe.I told her it was impossible and hung up.Since then, we have seen a new GI. He referred Carson to a Neurologist and speech therapist for the swallow issues, did endoscopy with biopsy that showed major esophageal damage and put him on Nexium. We are waiting on the biopsy results.Looking back, I wouldn’t let Dr.Hill treat my spaniel. He is a pompus A**!Our new GI is James Sandberg in Charlotte NC 704-316-5060 and we LOVE him!July 28, 2008 at 1:21 pm #54611AnonymousInactiveKelly,
I am glad you found someone who will listen to you and work with you. It is hard to live in such a rural area without good access to compent medical professionals and then to have to travel so far and end up with the same “crap” really sucks. I am glad you are making progress.

NC is rural, but you have Charlotte, UNC Childrens Hospital and Duke Childrens Hospital all within driving distance. I am a UNC grad, so it is hard for me to mention Duke in this posting! I was amazed at how quickly we were seen at UNC Children’s Hospital and they were great.

I had heard stories similar to yours, and we were lucky enough to have a good pedi who helped us. I’m so sorry that you all went through that. I cannot even believe that there are idiots out there who think that reflux doesn’t hurt. I mean, have they never had heartburn???

He is amazing:)
He generally only sees the worst cases though, my son included.
There are greart ped specialists at UNC, but they have done all they can do for my LO so they sent him on to Dr.F -
