Yesterday, Kaden had an appt with the SLP. She came out to the house. She was VERY good. She did mostly spontaneous and conversational speech b/c she wanted to hear Kaden speak in sentences and hear how he sounded spontaneously since his report from KKI in May said that his articulation was poor and he was only 20% understood at the time.
Well, I have noticed in the last month he has been a lot easier to understand and we have had a lot less tantruming as a result. He is still VERY selective eater and has some issues that are arising in that area (ugh) but his speech seems better.Yesterday, Mrs. Wendy understood 70% of what he was saying! She also did some really good exercises with him to help his facial muscles (using your tongue as an elevator to help with the ‘L’ sound and I actually heard him pronounce the L sound for the first time yesterday. Even though at his age, that sound isn’t so important to master, it helped him exercise the facial muscles.Well, then it happened. After she left, he asked for it. Out of NOWHERE. He asked for a BANANA. This is unheard of! I wanted to say “Kaden you won’t eat it, are you kidding me?” (that is how negative I feel INSIDE) but I said “OK Buddy!” and I gave it to him and he ate the entire thing. I praised him for eating it and he said he liked it. He now likes real blueberries (in pancakes only) and bananas. We are making progress with fruit.Do you think the exercises she did with his mouth made him want to eat something of a new texture?July 24, 2008 at 8:35 am #54390AnonymousInactiveAWESOME! I have that picky eater in my house as well, so I totally understand your excitement when they eat even one bite of something new!
That is so GREAT!

I find that Brodie is more open to new foods (well, more open to look at them @ least) after his OT works on textures & facial exercises w/ him (on & in the mouth). his SLP doesn’t work on that so much w/ him (but now that he’s talking some & artic is an issue I suspect they’ll start soon) so I would definitely say that it’s a possiblity that happened w/ Kaden. Let’s hope for many more to come!! Congrats again… it’s a wonderful feeling.

July 25, 2008 at 10:46 pm #54510AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone!
Beth, she said he did so well, she would call in a few months to see how he is doing. When she left he ate the banana and I thought WHAT? No, come once a week, please! lol (btw- he has eaten a banana every day since then) Now we have a new food to ‘wear out’ LOL but at least it’s a fruit and not a carb!July 26, 2008 at 12:28 am #54512AnonymousInactiveOh my goodness – that’s awesome! It’s great to hear you have a good SLP (too bad she won’t come more often) but as a mother to a self limited eater with big food sensory issues, I’m even more excited about the bananas!! They have always been one of Ben’s most squeamish foods, he’s just recently started to try a bite (all the while with a horrible look on his face like he’s trying something disgusting) but to eat a whole one – I would be thrilled too!
Way to go Kade!! -
