Perhaps I dont want to know the answer to this but in what ways does this get worse around 4 months? I can’t imagine it. If our lo’s are on meds and improving-what makes it worse?
July 21, 2008 at 10:54 pm #54286AnonymousInactiveI don’t know the biological reason why some babies get worse from 4-7 months but it seems pretty common. It was not in our case, however. We started a high dose of PPI at 3.5 months and never looked back. Finally saw complete relief right at 4 mos old. We didn’t see flare ups or ‘worse times’ except when teething.
We were also different than the ‘norm’ in the sense that Sarah came out spitting fire! We didn’t have any grace period like some moms do (common for reflux to appear at 4-6 weeks of age). We battled hard from the very beginning until we got it figured out. I don’t know if that makes any difference.Hope things are going well. I was just thinking about you the today. Have you increased (or pushed to increase) the prevacid dose or are you giving the neocate more time?July 22, 2008 at 12:06 am #54288AnonymousInactiveWe also never had the grace period. It was evident to me that something was wrong with my little man the night he was born. It just took awhile for me to figure out what that “something” was.
Teething does seem to make it worse. I have noticed that now he is in the “thick” of teething he refluxes more, but with his high dose of Prevacid (30mg) it doesn’t bother him. We did not get this dose until recently (7 1/2 months). REALLY REALLY push for that high dose. It is amazing to me how much difference there is in doses.kdub2008-07-22 00:09:29
July 22, 2008 at 6:24 am #54290AnonymousInactiveAmy-good to know, I hope that’s our case. I do have Catelin on 22.5 of solutabs as of Sunday. My current doc doesnt know Ive increased his script of 15mg a day. WHAT-ever! I have switched peds but she doesnt get back from Paraguay until the 28th. Im hoping she’ll be more understanding. Even our “leading” GI group told my current ped to take Catelin OFF of Prevacid. So-I have a feeling my upcoming GI apt is going to be futile.
Last week we rushed her to the ER after giving her juice to make her poop because she screamed for almost 11 hours. I was SO scared. Anyway, she ended up having an intestine full of gas but nothing serious. With the exception of last wed we really havent had any “good” days so after speaking to my cousin(who is also a ped but not in my state) she told me to start the Prevacid solutabs(all we had been on prior was the liquid-not compounded correctly and she spit it out). I got my current ped to prescribe them so we started on Sunday.Catelin isnt a spitter but is more the silent refluxer. I knew something wasnt right with her at about 8 days old. Now that she’s on the Neocate, the blood in her poop has cleared up but the darn formula just backs her up so incredibly bad. we have to go in sometimes and scoop it out while she tries to push. I do have her on m.o.m. and it seems to be working a bit.My current ped had been SUCH a source of frustration and let down. I just saw him yesterday to get her poop tested and he tried, one last tim, to convince me that there was NOTHING wrong with Catelin and that she is just super, “fussy.” Had I taken that advice 3 weeks ago, we wouldnt even know abotu her allergy. He also insisted that Axid and Prevacid are the SAME medication and that reflux doesnt cause pain anyway!ARGH. I just can’t wait to get him and the past 11 weeks of frustation behind me!On a lighter note- Catelin has been sleeping through the night the past several days(thanfully since our days are MISerable around here)! Last night she slept from 10:00-5:30 YAY!!!July 22, 2008 at 7:22 am #54291AnonymousInactiveHi!
It is sooo good to hear she is sleeping better!!Landen also came out spitting fire. There was no grace period with him either, and like Kristin, we did not get our ‘good’ dose of Prevacid until we moved from FL to MD and Landen was 8 months old!!!! He did OK on the Prevacid/Pepcid complete combo I had him on, but MAN, there were months and months he ate so little and slept so poorly. That is why I spend so much time on here talking to other moms. 🙂 When we were in the hospital the day he was born he was gurgling and glerping and pausing in breathing and the nurse kept saying it was b/c he was a C-section baby and he needed to clear fluid…..YEAH! RIGHT!!!!As for the 4-7 months thing, some beleive it may be teething and crawling that causes the flare up, but nobody is really sure. We did have a few rough patches, but I could never tell if it was b/c Landen was not properly medicated. I hope that b/c your DD is on a good dose you will not experience that!!July 22, 2008 at 8:25 am #54292hellbenntKeymasterjonah was born w/ severe silent reflux. He was put in the NICU at birth, so there wasn’t even anything (maybe a miniscule amount of colostrum) in his belly, aside from acid. no grace period for us, either. He was sent home on an apnea monitor w/ a RX for zantac & reglan. So Old School!!! Thank goodness I found this forum AND coincidently, the ped GI we got to was a graduate of U of Missouri (Dr Philips/research).
July 22, 2008 at 3:03 pm #54301AnonymousInactiveWe had no grace period either. I knew something was wrong when I heard his tummy churning in the hospital when he was less than 24hrs old. I will say that once we were on a good dose of meds at about 4 months pain was not an issue. Now spitting increased dramactially for us from 4-7 months.. he wasn’t in pain per se, just still spit up like a champ.
