Ok, so I went to Whole Foods & bought Nature’s Way Primadophillus probiotics for both boys. It’s for ages 0-5. BUT I have a few questions…
For Evan…-The dosage says 1/2 tsp (1.5 grams) for 0-2yo… that’s a wide age range, so you do think that 1/2 tsp is ok for him? (2mths old)-What should I mix it in? He only occasionally gets a bottle of breastmilk & even then he rarely finishes even 1/2 of it…-It says “between meals” (haha) but do I need to give it timed around Prevacid or other meds?I’m pretty clueless about probiotics, etc but I do know they help w/ yeast. Evan has/had an undiagnosed & untreated case of thrush in his mouth… I’ve shown it to ped since he was 2wks old & he always insisted it’s not thrush – despite a few white bumps in Evan’s mouth & my persistent burning nipples. Anyway, could this be causing all of his tummy problems? (Green, mucousy stools w/ blood, etc, etc) Again, sorry if that’s a stupid question but just trying to find an answer here.I think that’s it, but I”m sure I’ll have more questions…July 18, 2008 at 10:53 pm #54184AnonymousInactiveHey Erin,
I just wanted to let you know my experience with probiotics. Both of my girls actually did worse on probiotics…even dairy/soy free ones. THe kind you bought may contain trace amounts of dairy/soy…any probiotics that had that had a severe reaction with Brianna (with McKenzie I knew better than to even try)…so just be careful with that especially with Evan as I know you are avoiding almost everything under the sun right now, and I don’t want that little bit of dairy/soy to throw things off…as for dosage…I always start with about 1/4 of what the dose is supposed to be and work my way up to about half of what the recommend…but I think you will probably just have to play around with what works for EvanAs for what to mix it in…I usually just use a few mls or so of water mix it together and use one of those syringes that come with Mylicon…that way you get it all in.As for timing with prevacid…well I hope someone else can comment on that because I never even thought about that. 🙂Good luck!July 19, 2008 at 12:37 am #54194AnonymousInactiveIf you list what strains are in it and how much (million/billion CFU’s?) I could try to help with the dosage. And Emily is right, it’s usually best to start at a reduced dose and work up to the full recommended dose. I would likely try to give it via syringe in either some water or expressed breast milk. I honestly don’t think timing it around the Prevacid should matter, but just to be safe perhaps give it at a different time?
If you KNOW Evan has yeast issues, then you could likely expect the probiotics to initially cause some side effects for the first little while as it fights and chokes out the yeast. This is normal! Yeast die-off can be very uncomfortable and cause fussy babies/kids and strange poops – but push on because this is what we call a “positive negative”. It is also known as the Herxheimer effect. I wasn’t aware of this initially when I started Paige on probiotics. Then I freaked out because she seemed to get worse so I stopped them. It wasn’t until much later that I heard about yeast die-off symptoms and the Herxheimer effect. Then I was kicking myself for not sticking with it!July 19, 2008 at 7:02 am #54198AnonymousInactiveHey Erin,
I don’t have much info/advice about probiotics, and I don’t know if thrush could cause all the tummy troubles you mention, but I think it is Jill (jilly78) whose son’s reflux symptoms REALLY flared terribly when he had thrush– like many of us have seen bad flare-ups with sicknesses/teething/vaccines. She’ll probably see this thread and post.July 19, 2008 at 12:04 pm #54204AnonymousInactiveOk, so it says “may contain a minimal residual amount of milk or soy protein”… I thought this meant like made in same factory?! no?!
It’s 3 billion CFU.7 strains:-Lactobacillus rhamnosus-Lactobacillus casei-Lactobacillus acidophilus-Bifidobacterium infantis-Bifidobacterium bifidum-Bifidobacterium breve-Bifidobacterium longumSo, how long are we talking here for fussiness, etc?! Like a couple days? or a couple weeks… The reason I ask is b/c although I want to try & fix him I don’t want to throw too many things in the mix – & we have a “deadline” of end of this week before endoscopy. Also, he’s already pretty fussy-lol, so I probably/hopefully wouldn’t notice too much of a change.I DID order the kind you recommended Sheri but they won’t be here until next wk. They def won’t have milk/soy protein. Should I wait to start those instead? I got the Nature’s Way for my 2yo & realized they are also ok for infants.I’m not positive he has yeast issues, but I do think we/he has thrush that comes & goes…I think that’s iterinntx 2008-07-19 12:05:36 July 19, 2008 at 12:16 pm #54206AnonymousInactivePaula B wrote: Hey Erin,

We’ve had MUCH success with Kirkman Labs ProBio Gold Probiotics with both boys. 🙂July 19, 2008 at 4:40 pm #54213AnonymousInactiveUgh… we have his 2mth appt on Monday & I will (again!) have ped look for it. I’m pretty sure we have it though & have since 2wks old b/c my symptoms just keep returning.
ThanksJuly 20, 2008 at 3:03 pm #54238AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to say that my son had some yeast die-off symptoms as well. I also stopped giving him the probiotics. I think his symptoms lasted 4 or 5 days. his stools were never normal, but the probiotics caused him to have diarrhea and a yeast rash. Now he has great stools and takes a full dose of pro-biotics everyday. Also, I’m sure Sheri suggested a probiotic that is truly free of allergens…the one we use is made by Klaire labs. It is great.
July 21, 2008 at 6:26 pm #54268AnonymousInactiveSorry it’s taken me a while to reply,
The strains and strength sound fine for an infant. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains are ideal for a little one and infants should do fine with 3+ billion CFUs. I would be hesitant about the possibility of milk and/or soy though if you are wondering if he is MSPI. Maybe wait for the hypoallergenic one to arrive?Yeast die-off symptoms would likely only last a few days in a baby so young. In older children it could be longer or more severe if the yeast has been present and overgrowing for a long period of time. Just keep in mind that he could be a little extra fussy and could have some loose stools in the beginning.July 21, 2008 at 7:04 pm #54269AnonymousInactiveThank you so much Sheri. I ended up starting both boys on them on Saturday. I will switch Evan to the Klaire labs ones when they arrive. Thanks so much!
July 21, 2008 at 9:20 pm #54276AnonymousInactiveGood luck Erin. Just remember if Evan is fussy these next couple of days with how sensitive his tummy is I bet it is a reaction to the dairy/soy. Brianna always reacted to that kind. With McKenzie I started taking probiotics for her and I noticed I was ALWAYS bloated and had stinky gas and just felt yuck. I had to stop them and the day I did, it started to be easier to put her down to sleep. It was weird…it seemed to make some things better and others worse, but in the end sleep trumped all 😉 I don’t know why my LO reacted like that to probiotics, but I haven’t worried too much about it because my Ped said that most of the stuff in probiotics is naturally occuring in breastmilk. Good luck!
