I am thinking of trialing Nicholas on solids again. The last time I tried was 2 months ago and it was disastrous. He will be 8 months in a couple days. Is it too soon to try again?
What should I start out with? I know that sweet potatoes and pears are “generally” the easiest on sensitive tummies. Is one better than the other?Should I do rice cereal first? He has had rice cereal before (from 1 month-6 months), but I am iffy on it. I *think* it made his reflux worse, but its so hard to sort out the causes of reflux flare-ups sometimes.July 18, 2008 at 5:18 pm #54166AnonymousInactiveI don’t think you are crazy at all! Dylan did well on sweet potatoes, pears, bananas, rice cereal, but carrots and peas were awful for him! He spit up so much on those and it was really bad.
We were not successful with Dylan until over 12 months, but he had and still does have a much more sensitive GI tract than Carter. Carter was fine at that age and loved it all.Let us know how it goes. I am just wondering if teh sleeping thing is goign to be tough if you don’t know if he is upset because of the food or not…… That would be my only concern…July 18, 2008 at 8:07 pm #54169AnonymousInactiveIf you do I would probably do pears and maybe squash first? But I might wait until you have his sleep stuff controlled like Anne Marie said and then that way you will know what the problem is. I probably would wait until 9 months… I know it is so hard to not give them solids, but sometimes it is better.

I learned that the jarred food (at first) bothered him no matter what brand it was (even if it was advertised as ‘no added preservatives’. I just think added absorbic acid and whatnot flared up Landen’s reflux. So I bought fresh organic pear and sweet potato and I made my own baby food. The worst things I ever put in Landen’s mouth were banana and carrots. To this day he cannot eat banana without refluxing later on that evening from eating it. I think it is going to show up as an allergy on his skin prick testing and if it does not, well, then I’ll be shocked.Other things that had him up at night were green beans and sweet potatoes. For a long time his diet consisted of homemade sweet potato, applesauce (i found that mixing together a few different kinds of apples makes the best tasting baby food -like gala and red delicious) and pears. Then we did organic biter biscuits, organic cheerios & by 10 months we started expanding a little more.Good luck!! Maybe you can find a few things that work and just go with that for a couple of months. When I knew he could do apples and sweet potatoes, I would mix up a batch of apple/sweet potato blend. And the same with blueberry/applesauce….blueberry/pear, so it didn’t get too boring for him or me. 🙂 Oh and as for cereal, have you tried soy-free oatmeal yet? That is all Landen could tolerate bc of his rice intolerance. I know Beth tried grits (can’t remember what age though) with Cooper and they were a big hit. Just ideas.jilly782008-07-18 20:40:54
July 18, 2008 at 10:43 pm #54181AnonymousInactiveI do have a question about the biter biscuits and puff type foods. My ped GI (who BTW is VERY old-school) told me to stay away from wheat until 1 year. I know you guys have used the Healthy Times type finger foods, but they contain wheat. Do you think its okay? How did your kids do?
Ann Marie- thanks for the reminder about the sleep aspect in all of this. See why I need you gals so much LOL?July 22, 2008 at 12:14 am #54289AnonymousInactiveSo the day after I posted this, I busted my dd giving Nicholas Cheerios (dry). She had already given him a handful and there wasn’t much I could do. I decided to try him on Cheerios (not the greatest 1st food I know) for a few days. I have been giving him about 1/8 cup a day. Today was the 3rd day and I haven’t seen any bad symptoms yet. His bms are the same and he doesn’t have any rashes or anything. I am hopeful this is a good sign. I’m thinking of trying sweet potatoes next. kdub2008-07-22 00:14:46

Let’s hope Nicholas flies through with the solids now!July 22, 2008 at 11:49 am #54297AnonymousInactiveGreat news about the Cheerios!!! Landen always did fine on them. We actually started out with Organic ones by Barbara’s bakery and then moved onto regular Cheerios and he does FINE with them. He has always been ok with oatmeal and oats in general. That is why I was real surpised he didn’t do well with Oat milk (maybe too much of another ingredient in it bothered him?)
anyway- the Vanilla biter biscuits were fine for Landen by Healthy Times. he did not seem to be bothered by the wheat but he was not properly medicated, so if it was a mild intolerance I wouldn’t have noticed (I am just being honest here) so I am not ruling it out as an allergy for Landen and fingers crossed when he gets his skin prick at the end of Aug it doesn’t show up!! P.S There is also molasses & sunflower or safflower oil in them but we did OK with that too. 🙂 P.S.S (LOL) Landen LOVED their little arrowroot cookies!July 22, 2008 at 3:08 pm #54303AnonymousInactiveI would keep with the cherrios and see what happens. Sound like he is doing good. Cooper also loved the healthy times puffs and the teether biscuits. I just gave our last box to my neighbor yesterday. They worked well when I was doing the no dairy/soy stuff.
