My DD fits all of these except blood in stool (need to have occult test done from what I have read), rash, and diaper rash. She also has a couple of other symptoms I’ve read may be related like sometimes mucus in her spit up and weird smelling spit up, sometimes sour from being old but lately a different smell (sorry). We’ve done the Alimentum and we’re on Zantac and Prevacid. She’s shown some signs of improvement, but now I’m really wondering if she’s MSPI.My question is what is the next step we should take? I don’t want to have to start her on an elemental forumla unless needed, but if she is MSPI I really want to know so we can get her switched and feeling better! From what I’ve read though there really isn’t a specific test to check for MSPI?Thanks!COMMON SYMPTOMS
(For MSPI and MFPI)
Mucus and/or blood in stools
Inconsolable crying/colic like symptoms for long periods of time
Disrupted sleep
Eczema or rash like marks
“Spit up” an hour or more after feeding
Sulfur like or foul smelling stools
Diarrhea
Red ring around the anus
Peeling diaper rash
Gas/Wind

Sarah never had blood in her stools or eczema or anything “severe” like that. She just exhibited a lot of fussiness, screaming, poor sleep, etc…
If you don’t notice improvement in Isabella after a few weeks on Alimentum you might want to consider neocate or elecare. I don’t think there is a specific test that can be done you just need to follow your mommy instinct.HUGS!July 15, 2008 at 1:14 pm #54000AnonymousInactiveDagney had most of the symptoms too while on Nutramigen (she was on that for about 2 months), and only got relief on Neocate, and that took at least 1 month or so to help. She never had blood in her stool, but that’s not a sign that it’s NOT MSPI, the GI said that the intolerance shows itself in many ways, and some kids don’t have the blood in the stool. (which is also why there isn’t a real test to tell if it’s truly MSPI) She had colicy-symptoms, little to no sleep during the day, excema on face, sulfur poop, diaper rash here and there, and she would spit up mucus ALL the time. The Pedi didn’t believe me until she actually spit up in the Pediatrician’s office one day. THEN they realized that maybe I wasn’t crazy! After a few weeks on the Neocate her facial excema went away, never to return! (knock on wood!) It took longer for the stinky poop to go away, she still spit up, but after a while it wasn’t as mucusy either. I never noticed the red ring, but I never really looked to closely either…
I agree with Amy, give the Alimentum at least 2 weeks to work, but if she’s still uncomfy and exhibiting symptoms after that, you may need to try Neocare or Elecare. They’re not cheap, but you may be able to get insurance help or get them on ebay, and it’s definitely worth it if it’ll help your lo!!GOOD LUCK!dfb052008-07-15 13:17:43
