OK, this is going to be my LAST post today, I swear!!
Ive been working with a pharmacist who has been working with Dr. Philips for me. Dr.P stated that the nightime dose of Prevacid is useless and that it should be given in two doses-one in the am and one in the afternoon.Next- my pharmacist has to go to his corp headquarters to add the extra sodioum bicarbontae because it’s not been done her ebefore. It may not happen because Walgreens acant just “add” in more SB without documentation and sudy research. At leas tI have someone who is tryin gto help me.Dr. P told my pharmacist that the granules are best because they have a higher SB concentration BUT wit a MPI, can I give these? I thought I read that due to MPI, I couldnt use the caracream so I don tknow how I’d administer the granules. If this does not work, at the very least I can give my lo the increased dose (20 mg) a day but it wont have the increased SB. It’s all I will have…Thank youJuly 15, 2008 at 10:28 am #53970AnonymousInactiveWhat is meant by granules? Also, I know I am not answering your question, but why is a nightime dose not effective? I don’t understand that. Wouldn’t giving it before bed help with sleep?
July 15, 2008 at 10:33 am #53972AnonymousInactiveAccording to my pharmacist, it’s food that stimulates increased acid so since the baby eats more throughout the day, it’s very important to start in the am. He said three seperate times, Dr. P said “the nightime dose is useless” because there is less acid production at night. From my understaing, the granuales are the “best” form of Prevacid because they have the highest form Sodium Bicarbonate(which is what actually breaks down the acid and gives the medicine alonger life in the body). Apparently the medicine works much better in the refrigerator but starts to break down once in the body??
July 15, 2008 at 10:35 am #53973AnonymousInactiveOh & Lisa, the granuales are suppose to be crushed up and added to Caramcream(Baby Buffer) but I dont think babies with a MPI can take it(baby buffers). Im not sure and hoping to hear from Laura. She gave me all the info whe I first joined but I cant find it..
July 15, 2008 at 10:42 am #53974AnonymousInactiveOK, so what time should the last dose of the day be given?
July 15, 2008 at 11:25 am #53980hellbenntKeymasterok here’s the deal:
caracream is SAFE FOR MSPIas for the last dose:‘dinner’ time is FINE so that’s EVENING. Like 6pm.I think as far as NIGHT goes, not to give a dose in the middle of the night bcse it won’t be as effective. We used caracream w/ GREAT SUCCESS.we gave it am & pmwe used zantac as needed in betweenJuly 15, 2008 at 11:33 am #53981AnonymousInactiveYAY, Laura! Thank you! I am fighting like hell to get solutabs today, do I mix these with Caracream(or just the granules)? How do I get caracream?
July 15, 2008 at 11:39 am #53982AnonymousInactiveLaura-what are your thoughts on Zenegrid? Is it true that the caracream has lactose in it? Ugh..not sure about trying that. Am I correct in saying that the only reason(and its a BIG reason)to use Caracream is you have freedom to admin whenever you want?
BTW, my lo STILL has not pooped even with two bottles of KARO. This kid is either really backed up or has a steel trap for a belly?July 15, 2008 at 11:40 am #53983hellbenntKeymasterJuly 15, 2008 at 11:42 am #53984AnonymousInactiveGot it. Thank you. I don tknow how all you ladies got thses things prescribed so easily(seemingly), no one up here has ANY clue!!
July 15, 2008 at 11:45 am #53985AnonymousInactiveLaura- I KNOW your “not an expert” but in your “opinion” and from “your experience” do you think it seems as if Catelin has reflux?? I really, really am not sure? There are no real signs…and the flailing discomfort could all be from the inolerance. I am going to keep persuing the reflux meds obviously but I dont know if im barking up the wrong tree here.
July 15, 2008 at 12:02 pm #53986hellbenntKeymasterthoughts on zegerid:
it’s a loooong story…first of all, I’ll start with ME. Five years ago (!) my baby was a screaming/howling mess. He came home from the hospital on an apnea monitor, after being in the NICU. He was on zantac and reglan. HOWLING. He did not sleep. he would pass out exhausted only to wake up again arching his back, turning beet red and SHRIEKING like we had put him in hot oil.I hopped on the internet & found this site. I did not want to even join in. I sent an email to a nice mama. I read about caracream. I GOT caracream. then, I never left this board!the makers of caracream sold the recipe to Santarus, the makers of Zegerid. something like this. so then caracream could no longer be sold, due to non-compete agreements. so then there was zegerid, which is basically caracream but made with PRILOSEC (& a different flavor). caracream can be used with EITHER prilosec or prevacid. so at that time, there was no longer caracream, but there was zegerid.SO, zegerid it was!!!! no worrying about timing of the meds, etc. however zegerid came with it’s own ‘issues.’ nothing major! just a few kinks needed to get worked out.NOW here we are in July 2008. Caracream is BACK!!! now being renamed as Buffer Babies. So now you have a choice. Zegerid that is made with prilosec OR caracream that can be made with either prilosec or prevacid.I vote for caracream, since that ‘s what I used.you cannot go wrong with either one.BOTH are SAFE for MSPI babies.July 15, 2008 at 12:04 pm #53988hellbenntKeymasterok thoughts on if it’s reflux:
the meds will NOT HURT.once you think you’ve gotten a grip on the MSPI issues, you most certainly can try backing off the meds & see what happens!worse case scenario, you have a miserable baby & you add the meds back in.July 15, 2008 at 12:08 pm #53989AnonymousInactiveWhen pushing the ped later today do I push for solutabs or capsules? It sounds as though capsules would be easier but is the efficacy the same(in case I cant get capsules)? If I get capsules today, is there something they can be mixed with while waiting to get the caracream? Trying to get my ducks in a row sooner then later…
Hey, if she doesnt have reflux at least I lost a couple pounds in the stress of trying to acquire the meds. All is not lost. THANK GOODNESS for sleep. LO has been sleeping for two hours(no rhyme or reason, she had no meds today)- it certainly makes thing so. much. easier. -
