I’m baffled. My lo was put on Neocate this past Tuesday and started doing well almost instantly. Now however-after 4 days of improvment-we seem to be going back again? Im not sure if it’s more tummy pains from the milk allergy or if she’s constipated. Her normal habits were to go 2 times a day but since starting theNeocate, she’s only gone 3x in 5 days and each time has been with a suppository. Here’s my question: how do I even KNOW if she’s constipated other then the fact that she’s not going? Wehn we gave her the supp this morning hardly anything came out at all???? Do they have less bm on Neocate? Is it still in there and just not coming out? All 3 poops have been very low quantity and she’s back to being very fussy, unable to sleep and agitated. ARGH! 3 steps forward-4 steps back!! OH! I should mention, Im nervous to put anything in her bottle to help her poop because of her allergy. Her belly is distended out to the left too an dI dont want to aggravate anything. THANK YOU!!
July 13, 2008 at 8:19 pm #53840AnonymousInactiveI think the Neocate can cause constipation, as can the Prevacid. Mylanta can help the constipation, though. Dagney was on so much Mylanta for the GERD that the constipatoin from the Neocate didn’t affect her at first. When we stopped doing the Mylanta, then she got constipated!! It did even out, though, after a little while. Your lo is still small, so i’m not sure if you can give the Mylanta, or how much you’d give. Dagney was about 3 1/2 months when we first started the Mylanta. Maybe someone else knows?

July 14, 2008 at 8:52 am #53861AnonymousInactiveIf her belly is distended, I would take her to the ped as they will be able to see her and help you figure out if her body is just more efficient so she is utilizing more of the formula and not pooping as much, or if she is constipated.
I think I would call teh doc just to see if there is soemthign they can do to help..July 14, 2008 at 9:58 am #53869AnonymousInactiveMy son definitely goes less now on Elecare than when he was on other formulas. The distended belly is concerning. Here is a good article about constipation.
July 14, 2008 at 4:43 pm #53922AnonymousInactiveNobody has mentioned Miralax or Enulose…..What consistency are her stools if you don’t use the suppository? My understanding is..if they are hard, dry, or pebbly, then she is constipated. How often isn’t supposed to have anything to do with it ( I don’t know if I agree). You could use some Miralax. It’s super safe and effective. My ped GI says that 75% of babies on Neocate are constipated….and my babies are UNHAPPY babies when they are constipated. Enulose would be another option to ask the doc about. The distention should for sure be checked out though. Good luck.
July 14, 2008 at 4:51 pm #53925AnonymousInactiveHonestly- she hasnt pooped with out one!! I spoke to my doc this morning and she was unimpressed and just said, “She’ll go, it may take time.” It’s been 7 days since she’s gone on her own-which is exactly how long she’s been on Neocate!! OH MY GOSH, these people make me nuts!! I told her I gave the baby Karo syrup and she said she wouldnt recommend that because her tummy needs to heal and anything introduce from tummy down(vs hiney up) could aggravate her. Since starting Neocate her stool went from overly runny and green(and full amounts) to only enough poop in a week to fill my hand. This morning after giving her glycerine in the hiney she pooped out two little balls. Her belly is not hard however and the doc said that as long as something is coming out, she’s fine!?!?! Does this make sense? The destended belly was noticed by the oncall ped after midnight run in last week. He said it was OK. Her belly actually bumps out to the left. Should I be concerned about this if the doc saw it and said not to worry??
July 14, 2008 at 4:52 pm #53926AnonymousInactiveAre Mirlax and Enulose prescriptions? IF not, how much would I give her and how can I be certain she’s constipated if her belly isnt hard(according to current doc)?
Thank you!!!!July 14, 2008 at 9:29 pm #53943AnonymousInactiveI would still consider taking her in to the doc, what the heck, that’s what they’re there for!! That way, he/she can check her belly themself, and they can get you the miralax or enulose (not sure if they’re rx) and tell you the right amount.
July 14, 2008 at 9:50 pm #53946AnonymousInactivedoes she have a hernia? I am guessing, so please don’t be alarmed, but I would change peds if they are unimpressed with her issues and that her belly is disetnded and she is constipated….. Not that they are necessarily bad, but they don’t seem to take your concerns seriously…. That woudl bother me a lot….
