Here’s my correspondence w/ Dr. Phillips re: Caracream…
____________________________________________________Yes CaraCream EZ Mix is available. It would allow you to use Prevacid capsules and thereby remove the allergy issue.
David Stock, whom I have copied, wil contact you to get infor so that he can send you some Caracream EZ Mix__________________________________________________Dr. Phillips,Thank you so much! When using the Caracream will we be able to give him (3) 7.5mg doses? or will we have to do (2) 15mg doses… I guess my question is: are you able to “split” the dose once it’s mixed w/ the caracream?
I’m trying to get my info straight as I’m about to contact my pediatrician
about switching to capsules.Thank you again for your quick response & taking the time. I will be
looking forward to hearing from David Stock.Sincerely,
Erin Whitlock____________________________________________________Yes the CaraCream (actually we use Buffer Babies now, which is an improved
version of CaraCream), Buffer Babies is a liquid and had no pellets (a true
liquid) so you can give whatever dose you like.
Dr PJuly 2, 2008 at 3:31 pm #53293AnonymousInactivethat sounds great that it is a liquid and it does not have granules. let us know how buffer babies works, Erin. Dr. P rocks, BTW!

now, if it all works out that would be even better (ped calls in script for capsules, we get the caracream, etc)July 2, 2008 at 5:22 pm #53309hellbenntKeymasterFor curious onlookers, LOL:PLEASE MAKE SURE BABY IS ON ‘PROPER DOSE’ (HIGH ENOUGH!)BECAUSE THIS IS VERY IMPRORTANT!otherwise, all the caracream/buffer babies in the world won’t help!caracream/buffer babies: this is where you get a prescription for either prilosec or prevacid capsules (capsules NOT solutabs). next, you buy the caracream kits (now called Buffer Babies). you then act like a mad scientist at your kitchen table, and follow the instructions (or get your husband to do it, LOL!) for how to mix up the capsules together with the mix/kit. then VOILA! you have an easy-to-give liquid that you can give at ANYTIME (don’t have to time around meals) to your screaming baby. whoohoo!!! it is also safe for MSPI babies. essentially, you are compounding the capsules yourself (that’s why you don’t have to worry about the timing of the meds). How to get it? at one point in the past 5 years, there was a time when you could get caracream mixed by the pharmacist- you would have to check with Marci-kids about this, though. From what it sounds like in the email above, caracream, now called Buffer Babies, is a kit where you take capsules & do as I described in the above paragraph. I’d contact http://www.marci-kids.com. Also try contacting David Stock: [email protected] and/or Amy (David’s assistant):

It’s here, it’s here .erintx; posted p.2 wrote:
My bottle still says CaraCream (not Buffer Babies) fwiw. Here are the ingredients in CaraCream for those interested:-sucrose-corn syrup solids-buffer (sodium bicarbonate, calcium phosphate, potassium phosphate)-partially hydrogenated coconut oil-modified food starch-caramel flavor-turmeric-annatto extract-hydroxy cobalaminCONTAINS NO PROTEIN OR MILK PRODUCTfirst of all, I’ll start with ME. Five years ago (!) my baby was a screaming/howling mess. He came home from the hospital on an apnea monitor, after being in the NICU. He was on zantac and reglan. HOWLING. He did not sleep. he would pass out exhausted only to wake up again arching his back, turning beet red and SHRIEKING like we had put him in hot oil.I hopped on the internet & found this site. I did not want to even join in. I sent an email to a nice mama. I read about caracream. I GOT caracream. then, I never left this board!the makers of caracream sold the recipe to Santarus, the makers of Zegerid. something like this. so then caracream could no longer be sold, due to non-compete agreements. so then there was zegerid, which is basically caracream but made with PRILOSEC (& a different flavor). caracream can be used with EITHER prilosec or prevacid. so at that time, there was no longer caracream, but there was zegerid.SO, zegerid it was!!!! no worrying about timing of the meds, etc. however zegerid came with it’s own ‘issues.’ nothing major! just a few kinks needed to get worked out.NOW here we are in July 2008. Caracream is BACK!!! now being renamed as Buffer Babies. So now you have a choice. Zegerid that is made with prilosec,OR caracream that can be made with either prilosec or prevacid.I vote for caracream, since that ‘s what I used.but you cannot go wrong with either one.BOTH are SAFE for MSPI babies.Lori, s&h’smum Feb 6 2009 wrote:
You don’t have to time around meals with either buffer babies or zegerid. Both are immediate release. It’s only delayed release where you need to time around meals. With immediate release, the buffer in the suspension protects the stomach from any acid and also turns on the proton pumps (it’s the sodium bicarbonate that does this) so that they can be turned off by the med. In delayed release, you need to give the med on an empty stomach to ensure that the med won’t be broken down by stomach contents, and then you eat the meal 30 minutes later to turn on the pumps so that the med can turn them off. In the end, they both do the same thing. But with the immediate release PPI- zegerid, buffer babies/caracream, you don’t need to worry about meals.
You do need a capsule form of PPI though. As David said, you can use generic prilosec, but beware from a mom who has tasted it, that prilosec tastes TERRIBLE when crushed or chewed or swallowed outside of it’s enteric coating. It has a VERY bitter taste that is hard to mask, and required me to get a chaser to get rid of it.
hellbennt 2009-06-09 16:15:53 July 3, 2008 at 9:23 am #53352AnonymousInactiveCaraCream was the only thing that worked for my daughter. The only issue we had was the taste. I spoke to some of the people at marci kids about a year ago when they were developing buffer babies, and they told me that it will be fruit falvour, which should be better. Keep us posted!
July 8, 2008 at 12:00 pm #53541AnonymousInactiveHmmm – this is interesting! We’re looking at getting away from the solutabs as I think Paige is having troubles with the coloring and flavouring in it, and perhaps the aspartame. Does anyone have an ingredient listing for the Buffer Babies? I wonder if it is natural flavours/colors or artificial? I’ll maybe check into it and post any info I find here too.
July 8, 2008 at 7:01 pm #53573AnonymousInactiveHere is the response I got today per my inquiry about pricing and ordering of Buffer Babies (Caracream). The patient info sheet mentioned was sent as an attachment and is really just name, address, medications, etc.
Kristin,Here is the information that you requested on CaraCream. It is available from the Reflux Solutions Lab, and is “over the counter” as long as you provide the information requested in our Patient Information Sheet. If you are a new patient, we will provide the first two CaraCream Jr. kits free of charge. After that, you may order from us at $13.50/kit for CaraCream Jr. + shipping.

I’ve actually been in contact w/ David Stock for past 2 days & he’s supposed to be shipping our 1st 2 kits any day now. I’ve asked about purchasing them in the future (in 2 separate emails) & didn’t get an answer. Glad you found out for all of us!
July 11, 2008 at 1:07 pm #53731AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for this post. I’m very interested in caracream (buffer babies). I understand the message above from David Stock, but exactly how do I start the process to get it from them? Do I just call the phone number listed in his signature and he’ll send that patient information page or what? (I haven’t been able to find a website or anything).
Thanks!July 11, 2008 at 1:07 pm #53732AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for this post. I’m very interested in caracream (buffer babies). Thanks!Sorry about the duplicate post .My other question is why is it if you make up the dosage using caracream you don’t have to time it before meals, like with the solutabs or compound?isabellasmommy2008-07-11 13:08:34
July 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm #53738AnonymousInactiveYes, I would call him or email through the marci-kids site. If that doesn’t get you the info PM me.
The compound doesn’t have to be timed around meals. The capsules & solutabs do. If I understand correctly the CaraCream makes the capsules into a suspension (like the compound).July 11, 2008 at 5:48 pm #53762hellbenntKeymasterI just added that to the explanation post, on the previous page. Thanks for pointing that out, Isabellasmommy!
