Kiera had an appointment with a ped GI last Tuesday.
He took his time with her, ordered blood work (to rule out a milk allergy) and a lower GI xray to look for abnormal gas patterns. Both of which came back normal.
She has had increasing issues with pooping. She can’t go, can’t go, can’t go (screaming, screaming, screaming) until pow. Then we have 12 diapers in a row and then days of diarrea. Then back to the can’t gos. The weird thing is that her stool is never hard since we changed to alimentum. It just seems like she can’t go.He said he thinks she has lower GI issues which are causing the reflux. However, he did nothing to treat them. He said we might want to consider soy formula. I am scared that soy formula will make her even worse.
He changed her very good doses of Zegerid and Zantac to just 7.5mg of Prevacid (solutabs) a DAY!!! I expressed concern 1) the dose is too small and 2) if you think she might have a milk protein intolerance, why is she going on solutabs?I called on Friday and Monday to speak with the doctor (which he told me to do if things were not improved by then). I was only able to speak with his nurse who told me I had to wait another week to see if the Prevacid starts working. I told her about the continued hard time pooping. She asked the Dr and called me back to say that I should give her 1 tsp Milk of Magnesia per day to keep things loose. LOOSE????!?!? I just told you she has had scary diarrea for the last 3 days. By the way, she STILL has diarrea today. This has been since SUnday at 2AM when she filled 5 diapers in a row and has gone at least 6-8 times per day since. ALL RUNNY.I brought a stool sample in to our appointment and he did not check it.I am just so frustrated because I feel like she is never going to get better.I asked for a higher dose of the Prevacid, even though I am already giving her double his dose (7.5mg two times a day). She is 12 and a half pounds and 10 weeks old.Just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.July 2, 2008 at 2:59 pm #53292AnonymousInactiveCan you take a stool sample to your ped to check? I was surprised to learn from my ped that they do this in the office. I am confused as to why an upper GI xray also wasn’t done? Has she already had one of those? Sorry, I can never keep track.

Could the milk protein in alimentum be bothering her? Landen continued to grunt and be miserable (although not constipated) on alimentum until he went on Neocate. he still had bad reflux to until those milk protein were gone. Soy was bad for him as well (we actually tried that before alimentum. It is true that babies with milk protein intolerance usually cannot do soy.I agree with kristin, maybe your pedi will be more understanding and helpful. That test only takes a second! I am surprised he didn’t do it.I hope you can get some more answers soon. How was your DD doing on Zegerid? -
