So, if you’ve seen my post over on ‘gastrointenstinal topics’ you’ll know that I’m starting TED tomorrow.
When I took out dairy for a week I lost like 3-4 lbs & felt like my milk supply dropped. I was writing down everything I was eating, but I wasn’t counting calories or fat grams. So, obviously I’m worried about this w/ doing the TED.Those of you that did TED: Did you just make sure you were eating a certain amount of calories? (like the 1800-2500 rec/day for bf’ing)? What about fat grams?Any other suggestions? Thanks!June 28, 2008 at 10:13 pm #53157AnonymousInactiveI don’t log in often anymore but do get notifications when new posts are added to the TED sections. So, I’m glad you posted here. I read your other thread in the GI section and I agree with the others that the straining is probably related to intolerances. My son went through all of that, too. And, yes, it is possible to see some improvements in behavior in just a short time of being milk/soy free. The offending proteins currently in his stomach aren’t ripping him up so he is not so miserable. It takes a while for the rest of his body to recover from the previous affects of the offending proteins so the rash or blood in the stools or mucous might take even several weeks to fully resolve.
About your questions here, I loved the luxury of eating as much as I wanted of the foods I could have. You will need to make sure that you are getting enough calories and plenty of liquids. It will seem strange, but load up on olive oil in your foods. Saute your veggies in oil. Baste your meats with oil. Make your own french fries (or sweet potato fries…yum) or your own potato chips – or if you are including sunflower or canola oil, you probably can find some potato chips at the store that are TED-safe. Lays used to be just potatoes, salt, and sunflower oil (I’m not sure if that is still the case). You are smart to prepare ahead of time to start your TED. There is nothing worse than deciding to do such a strict diet and then look around in your kitchen and find nothing you can eat but plain rice. Try to always keep some leftovers in your fridge so that you can simply and easily through them in the microwave. After you get into the routine of the foods, it is actually quite do-able. And unlike any diet that I have ever tried, it was amazingly easy to stay on the TED even in extreme circumstances because I knew that the alternative was a miserable, non-sleeping, crying baby! Were you able to find Looza pear nectar? It is yummy!Best wishes. Keep us posted on how you do and how your little one does on your TED.June 28, 2008 at 10:30 pm #53158AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for your response (& thank you even more for your posts w/ all the brands, etc – we took that to Whole Foods & found all we needed!).
I bought a big bottle of olive oil & 2 big bottles of Canola oil. The regular Lays included “sunflower &/or soybean oil” but the Natural Lays were just sunflower oil & sea salt… so I got those.I’ve always been a planner w/ my meals, but this will be essential I think. It’s funny that you mention how easy it is to stay on the diet (b/c of the alternative)… when I did the dairy/soy free week that was exactly what I thought whenever I considered M&Ms 🙂 or something.I did get Looza pear nectar (actually our regular grocery store had it as well as Whole Foods)… it is chilling in the fridge & I will have some tomorrow. I was able to get all of the namebrand stuff you mentioned. Plus lots of free-range turkey options (burgers, ground, cutlets, breast) & lamb (ground & chops).I am sure I will have many more questions in the next wks (especially when/how/what to introduce after the 2 wks) so I’m glad that you get the emails for this section! Thanks again… I will just make sure I’m adding oils, frying when possible, counting calories & drinking plenty of water/fluids.June 28, 2008 at 10:50 pm #53159AnonymousInactiveI am glad that the list helped you out. I am thankful to Laura (hellbent) for helping me out by getting the TED sections of this forum set up and then for making some of the posts “stickies”.
When I started TED, I was scouring the Internet looking for specifics and not finding much so I wanted to help others avoid that frustration. Who has time for that when you already have a miserable baby and a restricted diet and a short supply of time and/or patience??By the way, congrats on getting the help you have from your ped or ped GI. I almost wish that my son ever had blood in his stool – maybe we would have been taken a bit more seriously instead of not getting a diagnosis until he was 7.5 months old.June 29, 2008 at 3:01 pm #53169AnonymousInactiveI was just going to pipe to make sure you do get those fats in somehow. I did my doc’s version of TED….actually I am still doing it, but my daughther went through one month of no weight gain, and I think some of it might be due to lack of fat in my diet…not on purpose…I did cook stuff in oil and what have you, but I have a super high metabolism to begin with and didn’t really get enough calories. I just don’t think my milk was rich enough for her. But that is better now, just watch out for yourself! 😉 Good luck
June 29, 2008 at 3:13 pm #53173AnonymousInactiveDitto to what Emily said. My milk supply, and really milk quality moreso, dropped while on the TED. I ate a TON of the potato chips you mentioned because they were so convenient, and even so I lost a good bit of weight (gained it all back, though – LOL). Just eat as much of what is “safe” as you possibly can — even when you’re not really hungry, and pour on the oils. Maybe soon you can add in some more healthy fats like avocado, which should help some.
Funny about the willpower issue….the TED is unlike any weight loss diet I’ve ever tried. I was still on it through the holidays last year, which really stunk, and my relatives could not believe that I wouldn’t try a bite of this, a bite of that. But I KNEW how it affected Nathan, and every time I had done this in the past, it always bit me in the butt! So it gets pretty easy to do a strict diet when it benefits your baby so much (and you!)Good luck again 🙂June 30, 2008 at 8:02 am #53179AnonymousInactiveLOL! That’s how I felt too, Paula! I totally stink at any diet because I always cheat and have no willpower. But that wasn’t the case with TED at all. I too didn’t nibble during the holidays and lost a TON of weight (mine’s all back now too though – boo).
The first couple of days were the hardest as your body kind of goes through a detox so to speak. After that it got easier. But just remember to eat, and eat… whenever. All your “normal” ideas of mealtimes, etc. kind of get thrown out the window. I think that was my problem when I started eating normally again.. I just kept eating all the time!June 30, 2008 at 8:30 am #53181AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies… I started yesterday & it wasn’t *that* bad 🙂 – but I am only on Day 2.
I will just continue to count calories & fat grams, drink lots of water/fluids & eat, eat, eat!I’ll keep you updated… when did most of you see changes?! Within 4-5 days? or did it take the 2wks…P.S. As I was just typing this – Evan (who I’m wearing in the moby wrap) just pooped WHILE SLEEPING. No grunting, waking, straining. It’s still very stinky (doesn’t resemble breastmilk poop @ all) & no clue if it’s mucousy yet, but baby steps I guess 🙂erinntx 2008-06-30 08:43:36 June 30, 2008 at 2:03 pm #53199hellbenntKeymasterand for babywearing!!!
June 30, 2008 at 3:13 pm #53207AnonymousInactiveHi Erin,
Had to say “HI” to you when I saw your son’s name, Brodie! I have never known anyone with the same spelling. Usually it’s Brody. My Brodie just turned 4. I need to update his marker. Anyhow, I don’t post much often, not much time and Brodie has been reflux-free for along time, Thank God! Good luck with the TED diet, I hope it works for you both!June 30, 2008 at 9:57 pm #53245AnonymousInactiveLaura- yeah, the moby is the only way I’ve been able to get anything done since Evan was born. I didn’t wear my 1st really @ all… but wish I had more!
Robin-I know! I rarely hear of another Brodie – let alone the same spelling! -
