I posted this yesterday at a different forum:
I am so mad right now..The GI doctor said there isn’t anything he can do.
He is gaining weight good, so he advises no medicines, no nothing.
My husband was more understanding than I was. I am still pretty ticked off.
I have to sit now and watch my little man be in pain.
The GI doctor didn’t even ask about his sleeping, eating, nothing..
Just came into room and started talking. He doesn’t even know my son
stopped breathing when he spit up or anything.I’m so frustrated!
This is what I posted today:I am still pretty mad about it all.
The GI we seen was not a pediatric one. I’m wondering if that would have made a difference.
I just don’t know what to do.
He was diagnosed with GERD from our family doctor because of lots of
spit up, but she wasn’t too concerned about it either since he is
gaining weight good. His other symptoms are: he arches his back(not
when eating, but when he is spitting up), his sleeping isn’t the
greatest, has some wheezing, coughing, wet burps and hiccups alot. gags
and chokes sometimes too. Spits up out his nose quite abit. He puts his
fist up to his mouth alot, not sure if that is a sign his mouth(or
throat) is hurting(he does it even when he isn’t hungry so not sure).
He stopped breathing one time when he spit up but we got him cleared up
and he was fine.Sometimes when he is in a good mood and smiling and cooing with mama,
then he spits up and it ruins it all. I do believe he is in pain also.I had a sheet filled out, I think I printed it from here but the doctor didn’t even ask about anything.
My main concern is his throat, I’m afraid with all the spitting up his throat is gonna get irritated.
I just don’t know what I’m gonna do about it all.
Our family doctor was the one who gave him Zantac but she won’t give
anything else. And on Friday she said to stop the Zantac and go to the
specialist. It’s gonna be rough, but I guess we can get through it. I am dreading
the 4-7 month stage, I hear the reflux gets worse before it gets better.I can’t even enjoy my little man.
Ok time for me to stop since I’m starting to cry about it.
Thanks for being here for me and for listening!!

That is TOTALLY unacceptable!! It reminds me of our first GI visit as well. The GI doctor walked in, sat across the room from Landen and I and insisted that he looked fine and that “reflux is just reflux and it must be outgrown” and that some babies have “colic” and perhaps it was just my “maternal anxiety”. I wanted to fly off of the handle but I was soooo exhausted at the time from lack of sleep. You and your baby deserve SO much better. Your baby is in pain and it’s not being addressed. There is no reason these poor babies have to suffer b/c they don’t have a voice! It makes me so mad!Was that the only GI doc in your area? I would try really hard to find either another family doc or another GI doctor. This is not something you just want to try and ride out til the end. It was close to a full year before Landen outgrew reflux and my firstborn was NEVER treated for reflux and he has some pretty serious problems now b/c of that. I was not as well informed about reflux when I had him and believed the doctors when they told me he just had colic (for 9 months!)HUGE hugs to you for having put up with such a sorry excuse for a medical professional!! Do not accept what that doctor said. Reflux is a rollercoaster and I could have never survived it (esp with Landen) if he were not properly medicated and on the right formula. This board saved my life with him (probably saved his life since he had apnea with his reflux)Hang in there!!!jilly782008-06-17 15:43:59
June 17, 2008 at 4:03 pm #52712AnonymousInactiveHere is a link to find a pediatric GI in your area. Good luck and take care! Sorry you had to deal with this!HUGS.
June 17, 2008 at 5:52 pm #52716AnonymousInactiveSee if there is a pediatric GI close to you that you can take your little one to. I find that the peds GI are more understanding when it comes to GERD in such little ones, well, at least ours did for both girls. He hated to hear that they were in such pain. Unfortunately for us, Alexis developed an eating aversion before we got her on the right dose of medications, and Taylor had severe food intolerances/allergies that we did not find out about until later, so now we are dealing with a lot of Sensory Intergration issues.

Have your pedi call and try to get you the appt. Isn’t your pedi concerned about him not wanting to eat b/c of the pain. That is what got us into lots of trouble. We saw Dr. Prestridge and I basically said I can’t leave until you do something and she did.
June 17, 2008 at 6:28 pm #52720AnonymousInactiveAt least put him back on the Zantac if that was helping I would say.
June 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm #52723AnonymousInactiveSo sorry you had to deal with a doc like that. I hate to hear these stories b/c it is so hard to get into see these docs and then you get told crap like that…. Since Erica just gave you two names, I would jump on whoever could see you first and give the Zantac until then and also use Cherry Mylanta Supreme to help as well. You are the best and sometimes only advocate for your lo and you are doing the best you can.
