Hello,
Here’s my 4 month old daughters journey, condensed. She was diagnosed at 4 weeks, on Zantac, then compounded Prevacid (only 7.5 mg/day), then Prilosec (had bad reaction), then I put her back on Prevacid till my appointment with her Ped. I brought in the MARCI info., and although reluctant, she called the Ped. GI dr. at Children’s Hospital, and they put her on 15 mg. solutabs, split for a.m. and p.m. I wish it had been more, but it’s a start. So, I gave her the first dose last evening. She took it well. Then, this morning I gave her half a tab, and she seemed to be refluxing worse. Choking, arching, crying, even spitting up (she usually is a silent rufluxer). I decided I needed to give her the other half (maybe the 7.5 mg just wasn’t enough). 5 hours later, and she is exactly the same. I don’t know if she’s having a tummy ache, or if it’s the reflux that’s causing her to cry. But, she does keep on making that gurgling/choking sound, so I’m pretty sure the acid keeps coming up.
My question is, even though she was on the compounded form of Prevacid, does it still take awhile for the Solutabs to take effect? Or, do you think she’s having a reaction to them? Has anyone else experienced this?
Please help me out with any advice. I HATE seeing my baby so uncomfortable, and feel so helpless!
Thanks!

it could be that the compounded PPI wasn’t effective? or did you seeresults from it?it can take 2 weeks for you to see results from a PPI, but usually when you switch from one form to another, or increase the dose, it doesn’t take the full two weeks again. that’s why I’m asking about the compound- they are notorious for being made incorrectly and so then if they do work, they become innafective after 2 weeks…the solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes later…just wondering if this is how you’re doing it?do you have any zantac on hand? I’d give that, too, spaced 4hrs apart from the prevacid and at 10mgs per kilo. Don’t just go by what I say; here, read this: Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914I think I would try the solutabs for a good 14 days (given on an empty stomach & followed by a meal 30 minutes later) and then see what happens. what formula is she taking? is she breastfed? proteins in formula & breastmilk, especially milk and soy proteins, can sometimes aggrevate/exacerbate/cause reflux- this is referred to MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance).glad you found us!~lauraJune 10, 2008 at 4:03 pm #52441AnonymousInactiveHi. Laura pretty much covered it but I have one thing to add. I did notice that right around 4-5 months my sons reflux changed. Early on, he was mostly doing the silent reflux thing. Then around the 4-5 month mark it changed to more spitting up and stuff coming out his mouth and nose. Not sure why. Maybe someone has some theories?
I also second the MSPI. We never noticed a difference in my son on the Prevacid even after the 2 weeks. Not until he was switched to Elecare (a non-milk, non-soy, amino-acid based formula). Maybe ask either your GI or pedi about MSPI. Good luck!June 10, 2008 at 4:36 pm #52444AnonymousInactiveThank you for the advice. The problem I am having is that today her symptoms are WORSE than they have been when she was on the compounded Prevacid. The reason I went on solutabs is because I read how compounded can lose it’s effectiveness. However, I do believe mine was compounded correctly, but am not positive.
I breastfeed my daughter, and have read about MSPI. But, could she have just developed this? The reason I ask this is because when my daughter was first put on Zantac, I saw results. Also, I saw some results on the compunded Prevacid, but it just wore off really quickly. Now, I am seeing no results for the first time today. Things are just worse than ever.
I did just give her some Zantac, and now she is sleeping. I’m not sure what to do about tonight though.
Thanks again for the input!
June 10, 2008 at 5:09 pm #52446hellbenntKeymasterwhen you say you saw results from the compounded prevacid, what do you mean? that after giving it you’d see relief for a few hours? or, that it worked for a week and then it didn’t? if you mean it worked for a few hours, then what I might do is go back to it, give the dose you gave but give that verysame dose 3x a day and see what happens…or, just give the marci-kids dose (might be the same as what you were giving, only just 3x the amount?)…
as for all of a sudden developing mspi, well, anything is possible. the proteins build up in their systems until they can’t handle them anymore. I would think that by 4 months you’d have seen mspi symptoms before this, but I really don’t know. so much is trial and error. that’s why I suggested going back to the compound, as you said ‘it worked.’
in the meantime I’d continue w/ the zantac. how much does she weigh? we can help calculate the dose for you
