My son is seven and a half weeks (12lbs) now and has been on Prevacid for a week (7.5mg daily, powder packets). But we haven’t seen much improvement yet: he is still in pain (arch back, stiffness, constantly gag and regurgitate, sour breath, restless sleep, poor feeding, and spit up), so I am wondering if he is on the right dosage.

I read some posts on this site that Prevacid will usually take 2 weeks to kick in, so I am also wondering is it that the symptoms will all disappear SUDDENLY in 2 weeks or GRADUALLY improve within 2 weeks?

I know we should give Prevacid 30 minutes to an hour before meal, but should it be given on an empty stomach or can it be given between the two meals?

And for the pain he is going through, is there any antacid like Mylanta or Maalox available for the baby, so it can temporarily relieve his discomfort?

will tell you if that’s a ‘proper’ dose for weight/age…my guess is that it’s a low dose…

babies have very fast metabolisms, so they zip right through the medicine- you’ll see that many have found success with higher doses of PPIs…and given 2, or even 3x, over the course of the day

if you have any zantac on hand (or axid or pepcid or tagament), give this as well, make sure to give it 4hrs seperate from the prevacid- these are all prescriptions & are usually what the dr prescribes first

it can take up to 2 weeks to see the results of the prevacid- if you increase the dose, you don’t have to wait for the full 2 weeks to see the result of the increase-it’s just 2 weeks initially

with the packets, you can strain out the beads & just use a bit of the powder to make a liquid- the beads are the medicine- some find it difficult to give all of the liquid the packets make if you use all the powder

you can give mylanta cherry supreme (it’s adult- there is no baby/child mylanta) if you want- it’s a ‘quick fix’ and is safe (cherry supreme contains no aluminum)- if you notice loose stools then you’ve given too much- but basically you can give a ml here, a ml there, up to 5mls spread out over a 24hr time frame

Laura covered it!!! I would look into a different form of the prevacid too. We started with the packets and they are a pain esp if you are giving such a low dose and then if you get a higher dose you end up having to give so much volume. I would look into the solutabs or the capsules. I believe they are “phasing” out the packets anyway… might be beneficial to get your lo used to another version. They all have to be given on an empty stomach and wait to feed. (An empty stomach can occur between feeds. ) I usually wait 60-90 min after a snack to give Cooper his evening dose… and then I consider him to have an “empty” stomach.

I bought Mylanta Cherry Supreme WITH CALCUIM, will that be safe for the baby? Or should I get the one WITHOUT calcium? Thanks!

I think calcium is safe- you’re giving such small amounts- even the aluminum is considered ‘safe’ but most don’t want to give aluminum to an infant…
