Do I need to get a referral from our family doctor to take him to one?
I feel like our family doctor isn’t doing enough and would like to take him to a specialist(even though it’s hours away from us)

That all depends on your insurance. Our requires a referral for specialist but some insurances don’t. And if you don’t mind paying out of pocket then it doesn’t matter either way.

we drive 3 hours to see a ped specialist and it has definitely been worth it. i think he is the smartest doctor i know.

I would just call the office and say “I want to see a specialist” and if they refuse, go with the above, but most docs will go with it if you have exhausted a lot of other options.
