Okay, so dd has been on 15mg of prevacid solutabs for a week and a half. I tried spliting it up and she got no relief. When I give her the whole 15mg in the morning, I have a great baby for the morning. She eats, she sleeps…you all understand!! Anyway, her dr called me this morning about something completely different, but while on the phone asked about the date her GI was scheduled for. So we got to talking about her not getting any relief in the afternoon and at night and she said that she’d like to call her in some zantac to try…0.6ml twice daily. She said to try it this afternoon and if she got any relief that we’d take her off of the prevacid solutabs!! Well, this of course, is not what I’m wanting to do at all! I was wanting to try and up her dose of prevacid along with a supplement of zantac! So, what do I do? I’m supposed to call the dr back this afternoon to let her know if she gets any relief from the zantac. Yes, I’m hoping that she does get relief, but I don’t want her taken off of the prevacid. She did say that she has heard of babies getting a stronger dose of prevacid but wanted to talk to the GI on staff before she does that. Anyway, do I tell a white lie and say that she’s not getting relief from the zantac just so that she is not taken off of the prevacid? HELP!
Also, prevacid and zantac should be taken atleast 4 hours apart right? Well, I specifically asked my pharmacist about it and he said no they could be taken together! I’ve had some problems with this pharmacy so I’m going to be very upset if they have given me wrong information.
May 15, 2008 at 2:50 pm #51490AnonymousInactiveNOOOOOOO!! They need to be taken 4 hrs apart!! You are correct. I would try the prevacid in the morning and Zantac later on in the day like 2pm and bedtime to spread them out and maybe keeping something in her all day will help.
I would just be honest with the doc and say you would like to keep both on board b/c Zantac is so wt sensitive and seems to be less effective, you don’t want to go backwards to using that only. If doctor refuses maybe you need to see another doc, I would be very adament. I know it’s hard to do, I had problems with being upfront with my doc and I totally regret it b/c I think it made things drag on and on.May 15, 2008 at 2:55 pm #51492AnonymousInactiveHonestly, if that Prevacid dose is all they are going to give you, I would give it in the evening. I would rather sacrifice having a good day to be able to sleep at night.
May 15, 2008 at 3:56 pm #51493AnonymousInactiveI would stay on the prevacid. I also would try the prevacid in evening. Are you only giving one dose? And just like Erica said the two can not be taken together. Reflux for was more of a pain at night for us, maybe becasue mommy was the only one not getting sleep when Ash was at her worst. The eveing dose was easier for me becasue I could time that round the time i knew she would be getting hungry. The am dose at first was yucky. I would go to the garage and walk around sing and dance around with Ash to help get her mind off of being hungry. And boy that can be along 30 min.

I also might give the Zantac in the a.m. and early afternoon and give the prevacid at night for the sleep factor as well, but whatever way you do it, I hope she starts feeling better sooner than later.
May 15, 2008 at 10:50 pm #51513AnonymousInactiveour ped gi gave us carafate to give to sylvia before bedtime and any other time she seemed to get fussy. (up to 4 times a day) you might ask about that. i can’t believe that your doc would suggest adding zantac later in the day and if it gave relief that she wanted to take away the prevacid—-i can’t imagine what she is thinking.
May 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm #51514AnonymousInactiveOkay ladies! My dr called me back at 7:45pm tonight with great news! I told her that the zantac did give enough relief for her to get a 4oz bottle down, play for a bit, and then sleep for about 30minutes…but only to wake up screaming. She’d been kicking her legs and arching her back since then, but I wanted to wait and give the second dose of zantac before bed. Anyway, she said that she talked to the GI on staff and that he said she’d be fine on 30mg of prevacid and to give her another 15mg tonight!! YEAH!! This is a new dr that we are seeing and, needless to say, we love her.
Let me ask you all something else while I’m on the subject of zantac. I gave her the one dose of zantac this afternoon and afterwards she seemed to be crying from gas pain. Have any of you experienced gas pain from zantac or could it be the formula? She is on nutramigen and she has a couple of bowel movements a day but they are runny like breastmilk poopy. I haven’t noticed her drawing her legs up until this afternoon.
May 16, 2008 at 12:02 pm #51522AnonymousInactiveHailey screamed from the zantac. I think the alcohol in it bothered her already burning throat, but just my guess. Good luck with the new dose!
May 16, 2008 at 1:19 pm #51524AnonymousInactiveAshlynn also screamed from the zantac

May 18, 2008 at 11:42 am #51545AnonymousInactiveYou can ask the doctor for Axid, it is alcohol free. It is in the Zantac family
May 18, 2008 at 11:42 am #51546AnonymousInactiveYou can ask the doc about Axid it is alcohol free
May 18, 2008 at 9:01 pm #51557AnonymousInactiveSorry I’m a little late on this, but Dagney did terribly on the Zantac, she screamed in pain all night and it did nothing for her reflux! I would ask for Axid or I think is Pepcid another rx that’s in the same family? I think she was on that briefly, just before we got the ok to up her to 30mg of prevacid. Another thing you may choose to do is Prevacid 10mg 3x/day, that’s what worked for Dagney. We were on solutabs, so it was +/- 10 mg (we’d break the tablets into 2/3 pieces) and give her about 2/3 of a solutab 3x/day. She did great on that. I never wanted to switch to the compound because I heard of all the problems others had with it. Good luck, and that’s great news your GI and Pedi are both on board with the higher dose, that’ll make things much easier!!
