For a week now, since teething has become more aggressive and since a bad cold (now gone), Ian has decreased his eating slowly everyday. We are now down to 2-3oz (and he doesn’t wake to eat at night) about 5 times a day. But a weird thing is happening since yesterday-if you feed him more than the 3 oz-he doesn’t vomit or spit up but just kind of opens his mouth and about an oz just flows out all over the place (sometimes a burp but sometimes not). Immediately after finishing. Doesn’t seem to bother him but we’re freaking out. Any ideas?? Ped told me a couple of days ago not to panic because he’s gained so much weight but I don’t think he realized (and I did tell him) that either 1-Ian’s been on rice-chunking him up 2-or he increased eating on Simply Thick to 30 oz a day, or 3-we struggle for an hour and a half to get 4-5oz in him-constant all day feeding. Am concerned because he’s in daycare 3 days a week and they don’t do that. They keep saying it’s ok for him to take 3oz at a feeding-normal, but Ian’s 17 pounds already and if he’s used to 6 at a feeding-that isn’t normal!
I like my pediatrician but am totally confused why Ian’s doing this 360 turnaround.
Help!!

February 2, 2006 at 8:10 am #516AnonymousInactiveIt takes a while for them to get over a cold. It seemed like Isaac was working back up to his “normal” eating habbits for about a week after. Isaac is 18 lbs and was down to 6-7 oz a day and worked back up to 20 oz. I wouldn’t worry at this point but just keep an eye out for dehydration.
February 2, 2006 at 12:31 pm #526AnonymousInactiveI”m not sure what to tell you, Tracy – some odd feeding issues here as
well. You have your new Ped GI appt soon, right? How does his behavior
seem?February 2, 2006 at 1:29 pm #534AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. I don’t think it’s the cold but of course, I could be wrong. Thought of a sore throat, but no other symptoms. Also, entire time he had the cold, he ate a ton and was in great mood. But again, WHO KNOWS, right?
Demeanor is not grumpy or happy, just totally interested in sucking hand and he keeps gagging himself. But sleeping fine, no crying or anything. Am just concerned over this volume of food coming out right after eating. It doesn’t seem to bother him like reflux – it just sort of falls out. Delayed emptying would have shown up before this, right?
K-I read your post about the gas and I really think that has been interfering with his eating way more than reflux too. I’m wondering if the arching is just another way to manifest it? What’s Marisa taking in right now? My husband is thinking it’s taste but I think he’s bonkers. If it was taste, it wouldn’t have started up like this with all the other issues.
As always, thanks again.

effort. She will eat 3-4 ounces OK usually and then fight and have gas
and then we try again later. She eats again better usually after a
break and after passing gas and sometimes when sleepy. And well after
her bath at night. In her case, doesn’t seem like reflux at all – she’s
also sleeping really well and playing for the most part – although more
serious than usual.Does anyone know if there are certain tests they can/should do when
gas/digsetive issues are the main concern? Anything we should look
into? It seems to really only bother her when eating – not when playing
or sleeping. -
