I feel like I am posting all day long, every day, but I just don’t know where else to go.
I had thought that today was a better day, at least that is how it started off, Kaden appeared happy and content. And yesterday seemed better. Then it all started around 10am. He cried very hard, and obviously had major gas pains (he was able to get rid of some of it with me pusing his legs up and massaging his belly, which he really seems to dislike) for 2.5 hours. Then he hung out in his swing, but within another 30 or so minutes, wanted to eat. Now he just won’t stop crying. He has been on ranitdine for a few days now, and thought that I had seen some improvement. Now I am not so sure. Is it the bottles that we are using? Are they contributing? We have tried Playtex avance (which he loved but health canada has deemed the BPA in it dangerous so we no longer have them), Gerber Clearviews and now platex nursers with the disposable bags. the Gerber flow was way too fast, and the nipples were the slowest available. So the Public Health Nurse had said that the air intake would be less with the playtex with the collapsable bags. He is still super gassy. And screaming. And has hiccups at least 3 times a day, hard, wet hiccups. I had to give him Ovol drops last night and today again too, which help a bit.Don’t get me wrong, it is not like he crys 100% of the time, but it is more time than not.And my husband doesnt get it. He keeps saying that maybe we just have a cranky baby and we will have to live with the crankiness until he starts solids (not even sure I understand his comments).Anyhow, thanks for reading..May 11, 2008 at 8:06 pm #51345AnonymousInactiveI am sorry you had another rough day with him! You are explaining the same experience we had with zantac too. It would “seem” to help for a couple days, then it just stops. It really doesn’t do much for healing erosions on the esophogus and keeping the acid under control. Landen had reallllly bad gas too and at times, I would think gas was more of an issue than the reflux, but we realized his intolerance to any formula that was not Neocate was just aggravating his ENTIRE GI system. He’d grunt b/c of the acid, the cramping, etc. He grunted SO LOUD and the pushing and grunting to fight acid made him pass gas. he was so miserable.
I’d really look into a hypo or elemental formula and go for the PPI (I am sorry, I know I sound like a broken record with the formula and the PPI!) I just know that the right food and medicine can really turn things around for these babies!!Hang in there. I hope you still had a great Mothers Day!May 11, 2008 at 8:42 pm #51350AnonymousInactiveI agree with Jill. He needs a PPI and probably a formula change too. That is probably what it is going to take to make him feel better. Bottle wise we used the Dr Brown’s and they made a world of difference. I do believe that they have BPA in them but they do make glass ones if you are that concerned. We found such a reduction in gas with them that I wasn’t willing to change and the whole BPA stuff came out when we were almost off bottles. Another option similar to Dr Browns are the Borne Free but they are pretty costly but I have heard good things about gas reduction in them. HTH.

You don’t sound like a broken record, I am waiting (but not too much longer) to give our pediatrician a call to see what the next step is. I want to give the zantac a fair chance, so once we hit the week mark which is on Wed, I will call him. Maybe Kaden just had a bad few days, but I am guessing that is not it.
You described the gas to a tee. He grunts, pushes, cries, all at the same time. And the gas that this boy passes, is louder sometimes than his dads. I try to help him by pushing his knees up into his belly, but this rarely helps get anything out. I just felt so terrible for him expecially last night.
At least my husband got a true taste of what Kaden is like all day, most days. He is usually not here to see it as he works, and he is so tired by the time he gets home that he falls asleep on the couch so doesn’t really hear how miserable our little man can be……………….I am also noticing that Kaden’s first bottle of the day, which so far has always seemed to be around 7am, he won’t take a whole bottle, so I give him his zantac, and he usually eats only about 2.5-3oz. Then he goes back to sleep for a few hours and is up after that, for the day. Which is why I only have a few hours to do what I need to do, and to give my 2 year old some attention, as it is hard to do with a screaming baby in your arms!Cross your fingers that today is a good day! Thanks for your support, once again.May 12, 2008 at 3:11 pm #51372AnonymousInactiveDitto what everyone else said about your son probably needs a PPI and a formula change. Any good days we had while on Zantac were flukes, looking back. Don’t let the good days fool you — and 1 week is plenty of time to give the Zantac to work. If he’s not 100% better, move on up to a PPI like Prevacid, Nexium, or Zegerid.
And the gas you described sounds just like both my boys — who had major protein intolerances to milk, soy, etc. Once I cut these out of my diet, they were a lot better. A marci-kids dose of Prevacid was also required to soothe the acid.
Good luck!
