I posted in the introductions forum if anyone is interested………………..
I am Erin, Mom to our newest baby, Kaden. He is 5 weeks old and was diagnosed at 4 weeks with reflux, after we went to the Dr due to days and days of unconsolable crying, back arching, tons and tons of gas, and spitting up (although not alot). Kadens crying got progressivly worse the few days before our appt, so I am glad we went. The Dr observed his crying and behavior while doing so, for almost a half our.
He gave me a bottle of BioGaia (which I later found out is very difficult to find in Canada), which is a probiotic drop. It seemed to be helping a bit, but then yesterday and today (days 4 and 5 on the drops), the crying, back arching etc is coming back. I called the Dr yesterday as he asked me to, and told him that Kaden was getting worse again, and he said to fill the Rx for Ranitidine that he had also given me. He said to add the ranitidine to the BioGaia.
I am a little leary to give him the ranitidine, but don’t know that I should be.He has also talked about switching formula’s (he is on Good Start) to a hypoallergenic one, I am pretty sure he said Neocate. I just simply cannot afford it (the Dr said it was between $40-$45 a tin that would last only a few days per tin), so would rather we take a different approach if a formula switch is needed, to maybe a lactose free or a soy formula to see if he tolerates it. I will likely go pick up the ranitidine tomorrow if he is the same as today…………….which brings me to my post.Kaden had such a bad day, he cried more than he didn’t. I couldn’t put him down for more than 5 minutes at a time, without his intense crying starting up. He doesn’t like to be swaddled, and I find that NOTHING I do will make him stop. He doesn’t sleep at all during the day due to the same, but at night he sleeps very well.
I have tried bouncing him gently to help with the gas, “pedling” his legs into his belly, Ovol, Gripe water, with very little relief. My husband questions as to why he doesn’t cry nearly as much when I am holding him (he isn’t around during the day as he works so doesn’t see the worst of it). I just don’t know what to do anymore, I had to start my dinner at 10am today so I could get it all done!! One handed preparation is harder than I thought! My 26 month old is having a really hard time (first, because he is 2, second because his nose is out of joint with the new baby here and third, because 99% of my attention goes to Kaden) which makes it really hard for me.I am sure I cried for a good 2 hours today, as I just didn’t know what to do.
My friends who have kids all say “he is just colicky” but this is not just colic. The Dr said he probably has some colic, but his initial 18 hour crying day (off and on) proved that this is a bit more than colic. he is hurting. Will this get better? I have never dealt with this, but don’t know how much more I can take!!!
Will the ranitidine help? Has anyone had much change with the hypoallergenic formula’s?Thanks for reading, sorry it is so longErinMay 7, 2008 at 9:49 am #51178AnonymousInactiveHi and Welcome again. You have found a wonderful site full of great information. I believe we have another new mom on here whose lo is on the probiotic you mentioned. I don’t know anything about that. Go ahead and get the Zantac filled… but only wait a week before asking the doc for something else. It doesn’t work for most babies and they need things like Prevacid or Zegerid. I am sure that Laura or someone else will post her groupie intro for you which is full of great information. Things will get better but usually peak around 4-7 months. If you don’t want to go the neocate route then I wouldn’t suggest doing Soy as many babies have both milk and soy protein intolerances (MSPI) and then I would suggest either Nutramigen or Alimentum (don’t know if they have different names in Canada). We have a few moms from Canada on here and I am sure they will be glad to help you out. Sorry if this is confusing. i am trying to deal with my son and a puppy and type at the same time. Good Luck/Best Wishes.
May 7, 2008 at 10:40 am #51180AnonymousInactiveHello and thanks for replying. This certainly is an informative site, just by looking at posts I can tell!
My DH took the Rx to work with him to get filled, so hopefully Kaden will find some relief (as will I) later on today.I have a few medication related questions, but am not sure if I can post them here. So I might, and if there is a medication forum (I haven’t looked yet) I will post there as well. The Doc prescribed 10mg, 3X a day for 14 days. Am I to give this regularily? Or only if it appears he needs it? I am not sure. Also, how long does it take to “kick in?” I have heard that ranitidine has a bitter taste, any tricks to getting him to take it? Should I put it in a little bit of formula (what I would do is what I do with the BioGaia, take about 2oz of formula, add the meds, just in case he doesn’t finish a 4oz bottle, then I can always get more formula if he wants). Are there any terrible side effects from ranitidine? I just hope that this helps a bit.And yes, our Dr did say that alot of babes that cannot tolerate milk also cannot tolerate soy, which is why I am assuming, he wants to try hypoallergenic if it gets to that………….
Kaden is gaining weight though on the milk based formula, so I guess that is a good thing. I personally feel he isn’t tolerating it well though, as his little belly rumbles away every time he has a bottle…………………
We do have Nutramigen and Allimentum here, available pretty much everywhere. My DH wanted to know, why do babe’s with reflux seem to calm down when you hold them? Because Kaden will be beside himself, then once I am cuddling him, he will still get upset and all, but not nearly as bad as when he is in his swing/bassinette etc. He also sleeps awesome at night, so that is a good thing.
Thanks for your help and I am looking forward to getting to know you all.
Erin & KadenMay 7, 2008 at 10:50 am #51182AnonymousInactiveSome times medical insurance will cover the cost of “special” formulas. My son is on Elecare and our insurance pays 90% b/c they consider it part of their Enteral Nutrition coverage. Maybe check into that.
Laura (hellbent) is great with med questions, as is MFPIx2 (pharmacist in Canada). So…ask away!My son cannot tolerate milk or soy formulas, but still gained weight when he was on them.Good luck and best wishes to you and your family. It is very hard to have a refluxer when you already have an older child. You are a GREAT mommy and are no doubt doing the very best for them. You are absolutely right about “colic”. There is no such thing. Mommy’s know when their babies are hurting.May 7, 2008 at 2:42 pm #51189AnonymousInactiveHey there… to answer your last question, probably why he settle a bit when you hold him is because he is fully upright, which helps keep the reflux down a bit. Any reclining at all, and it shoots right up.
I would fill the script right away and start it.. give it as often as the doc says and maybe use some Mylanta Cherry Supreme in between to help soothe his little throat. H2 blockers like the Zantac tend to only work for a bit and then babies sort of level off on them and they lose effectiveness. Hopefully, it will bring him (and you) some relief though. As for the formula, I don’t have any experience, but I know alot of moms first try the Alimentum or Nutrumigen route and then if that doesn’t work move on to the Neocate. It can take up to 2 weeks for the formula to help though.Weird question.. what do his stools look like? Any mucous or blood.. that’s also an indication of an intolerance. Sometimes constipation can be as well.May 7, 2008 at 3:56 pm #51191AnonymousInactiveHi there and welcome!
I LOVE your sons name by the way (I have a Kaden too) 🙂Gosh, when I had Landen I wrote a post SO similar to yours. Kaden was 26 months old when Landen was born and I cried….and cried…..and cried until Landen stopped crying all day. It took a good dose of a PPI drug. Landen also required to be on Neocate. We did try BF, milk based, soy, Alimentum, and then finally Neocate. He was just too intolerant to milk and soy to be fed anything else.Do you have Cherry Mylanta Supreme available to you? That can help coat Kaden’s esophagus and stomach before a feeding until you can possibly get your hands on a PPI.Be careful with gripe water, it can actually make reflux worse for many babies (some do ok) I think Laura (our mod) has a link on this as well.Hang in there! My Kaden also had a hard time when Landen first came home. It gets easier, and now my boys play and laugh and entertain each other most of the day!May 7, 2008 at 4:02 pm #51192AnonymousInactivep.s. you can also mix Cherry Mylanta Supreme together with your zantac. The Cherry will make it more palatable. when we used Zantac I’d take the dose of zantac, drop it in a little cup, add an equal amount of Cherry MS and mix it together, then adminster it. You just cannot mix H2 blockers with PPI drugs like prevacid, nexium, zegerid, prilosec, etc.
May 7, 2008 at 6:47 pm #51195AnonymousInactiveHi there,
Ask away!!! His stools range from kind of constipated (but this has only happened once or twice and it has been just a very small amount) to pasty, green (from the good start-iron) to pasty green with curdy stuff which appears white-ish in it. Is this undigested milk?I filled the prescription so will start it tonight. Unfortunatly, no where that I can find where I live, carries it……………the mylata…..
K, he is crying again (not surprising) so have to go. I will respond to more posts later
Thanks again!
Erin
