As feared, Cole has backslided the last 2 days ( day 9 and 10). Has anyone ever known or had their infant on more than 30mg/day of solutabs? I’m dosing 15mg in the am and in the pm. Marci-kids rec 21-30mg for his weight of 16lbs. He is almost 7.5months old.
April 26, 2008 at 1:01 pm #50901AnonymousInactiveSusan, I’m very sorry to hear this. Can I ask how Cole does in the few hours after each dose? Does 15 mg at one time seem to help for a little while? I dose my Nathan as you do, 15 mg before first feeding and 15 mg before last feeding of the day. Up until pretty recently, he would have good mornings after his first dose and good nights after his last dose (at least the first part of the overnight was good), but the afternoons were horrible. I always wished that I could have given him another 15 mg dose in the middle of the day because Zantac and Mylanta did not help at all.
So to answer your question, I never had him on more than 30 mg, but I would’ve jumped at the chance to!! Lately, though, I do believe he’s starting to outgrow it because his morning dose usually lasts through the afternoon these days.Hang in there!! Oh, and it’s possible that you may still need to give it a few more days to see the full effect of the 30 mg? That’s probably not what you wanted to hear, though 🙂 I know you’ve been through it.April 26, 2008 at 4:20 pm #50905AnonymousInactiveI have heard of other moms doing 30mgs but in 3 doses… Here is a thought which might be a pain, but could you try 7.5mg in the a.m., 7.5mg mid day and then the 15mg at night? I know having to time around 3 meals can be a pain. I don’t know of any moms whose lo’s were on more than 30mg of prevacid, I have heard of higher doses of zegerid, so it might be an option esp if he is peaking right now.
April 26, 2008 at 4:49 pm #50907hellbenntKeymasterdo yo have any zantac (or tagament or pepcid or axid) to add in?
just make sure to give it 4hrs seperate from the PPIApril 26, 2008 at 5:38 pm #50908AnonymousInactiveThanks for all of ur comments. I will wait longer, plus we have a Doc appt next Wed, she said that she was going to do the hemoccult testing since he has been on Neocate for 5 wks. If it is clear then we can start solids again. I would love to try finger foods for Cole.
Paula, to answer ur question about how he does, honestly his feeding is VERY ERRATIC, I can never make any reason out of it. I’ve tried, some mornings he will eat 3oz, other mornings he won’t eat at all (and I always dose 15mg 1st thing in the am. It does seem like he has a little more relief from 15mg instead of 7.5mg at a time. At night, he wakes hungry around 1-2am, but he has a tough time and only drinks 2.5oz or less squirming, and wakes again at 5am for 1-2oz.Today has been a smoother day, he is taking 3oz bottles mostly. I guess he just has really bad days at times and will always have them. I may try splitting the doses as u say if he has many bad days in a row.I may try Zantac at night and dose 15mg am and 15mg afternoon. I’ll try that after the 14 day mark if he doesn’t improve further or gets worse.Laura, how do u give Tagament or Axid? I’ve tried Pepcid, but I can’t smash it good enough and he choked and vomited.April 26, 2008 at 5:48 pm #50909AnonymousInactiveWhen u all saw improvemt, was it samll improvements until dramatic improvemt? I suppose I don’t know what to expect. I don’t think he will ever drink like an average 7-8month old, but is it unrealistic for him to take at least 3oz in 1 feeding almost every time after he has been on solutabs for a longer time?
Another challenge with Cole is knowing when he is really isn’t hungry. He eats so little that I always assume he could be hungry. He rarely cries for a bottle, so I just try to offer every 2-3 hrs or sooner if I get a feeling he may be hungry.SweetBoy2008-04-26 17:48:58
April 26, 2008 at 8:08 pm #50914AnonymousInactiveThe tiny bit of aspertime and lactose in the solutabs were enough to make my children both MUCH fussier and uncomfortable at times. We had to do the compounded prilosec with Carter and Dylan had packets of prevacid (probably not the best choice) and then capsules that we opened up and gave in a bit of water.
Is there any way you can try a different form of Prevacid or possibly Zegrid? Not sure if this helps as LOTS of babies here have had a lot of success with the solutabs, but we were one family that it just didn’t work for.Hang in there!!!Ann MarieApril 26, 2008 at 8:14 pm #50916AnonymousInactiveWe did up to around 42mg of prevacid in 3 doses at her worst.
April 28, 2008 at 11:42 am #50941AnonymousInactiveWe were on 45 mg. (solutabs) at one time.
15 mg. in the morning and 30 mg. at night. He was probably about 2 1/2 yrs. old at the time though. I had asked for a higher dose before then but the GI would not give it. Oddly enough, Seth was waking a lot last week refluxing so I upped it again (from 30 mg.) and both nightsI did, he slept much better so I am thinking we need to be on the higher dose again as well.April 28, 2008 at 1:33 pm #50949AnonymousInactivebtw-I found a good way to dose the pepcid, although it doesn’t do much for our daughter we gave it for about 2 weeks cause it does provide some instant relief similar to mylanta.
anyway, get the packets instead of the bottles. They come in foil packets that contain 1 pill each (make sure to verify it has the same ingredients as I don’t recall, but we only gave it for about 1 week). Then take your rolling pin and roll over it until you can feel no more chunks in there, don’t press too hard or you might break the packet, but they are pretty strong. Then just measure 1/4 teaspoon and sprinkle it into one of those big droppers. You’ll then have to gently insert the plunger w/o compressing it too much or the powder will shoot out, then shake the powder down away from the tip so you can insert the plunger the rest. suck up about 1 or 2ml of water and open it up all the way for shaking room, shake the heck out of it. Turns out to be a nice consistent liquid & they love the taste.Or I guess alternatively (I didnt’ try this) you could buy the big bottles of pills cause they are cheaper, smash a bunch of them up w/ a rolling pin between wax paper or something stronger like foil and store the powder, then maybe suck up 1/4 teaspoon w/ the big dropper. Might be a little easier and cheaper this way.area1232008-04-28 13:36:25
April 29, 2008 at 12:39 pm #50964AnonymousInactiveHello Everyone! I am new to this and still tring to find out what medicine would work best for my little one. As of right now he is on Reglan…it helps with the vommiting and has reduced it which is good because he would vommit up through his nose at least 5-8 times a day while being on the prilosec. And sometimes this would happen in his sleep..which is the most frightning thing.( and thats with him sitting up in his swing) But it is not taking away the pain.. that he still has before, during, and after feedings. I am going to the doc tomorrow and I am wondering what meds should I really request and use. I want to make it to where my little guy is happy and comfortable. But I see alot of back and forth comments reguarding prevacid and others. I am just out of answers cause the rice in the formula isnt helping, and mylanta doesnt last long , and tylenol only works for so long too. So any advice on the meds would be great and what I should really request his doctor. And can anyone tell me why some docotrs dodge you when you ask about the prevacid? Do babies have to be at a certin weight before they can go on it? And interms of the dose amount..I am noticing that after 2 weeks 15mg twice a day sometimes doesnt work anymore…well I have a girlfriend whos son was on it and ended up taking 30 mg twice a day and it helped him. He was on it all the way till his first birthday…can the babies handle that? Anyways…any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!!
