Thanks for this site it is awesome. I have a bunch of questions. My daughter is 7 1/2 wks 10lbs 3 oz. She has started Neocate on Monday due to blood in stool for over 6weeks. She started Axid and prevacid around the first week of April. The GI only put her on 7.5 mg of Prevaicd in the am and 0.7 ml axid in the pm. Accordingly to marci-kids she should be on double to triple that. She is extremely gassy, cries during and after feeds, does not sleep for long periods and moans, groans & grunts constantly. I am putting 1tsp of rice in the bottle. Could the Prevacid or rice be making her gassy. I started her with a chiropractor yesterday, tried gripe water without the baking soda and COlic calm. ANy other help would be greatly appreciated!!

Is does sound like she is in pain and probably needs a higher dose, but I would give the neocate a good 2wks to do its job and see how she does then. As for the rice cereal it is very hard for babies to digest and goes cause gas so that could be part of the problem. The Prevacid can cause some gas as well. You need to give the meds a good 2 wks to work as well and I see that she hasn’t been on them that long. You may need to do 7.5 mg of the prevacid in the a.m. and p.m with the axid in the middle of the day. ARe you giving her the prevacid on an empty stomach and following with a feeding 30-60 min later? This is very important for the med to work properly and many docs forget to tell us moms that. You can also give mylicon drops.. we used generic and lived on them for a long time and still use them occasionally. They don’t work for some babies. but great for others. Another option until things start working (meds/formula) is Cherry Mylanta supreme. It has gas drops in it as well. but can cause loose stools. It helps to coat their throat so it doesn’t hurt as bad. Many moms use it 10-15 min before a feeding. I probably wouldn’t give more an 1ml to start with just to be on the safe side until you see how it effects be stools. I am sure that some of the other moms will chime in as well. Best of Luck. Glad you found us.

I know that adding cereal works for some babies, but I’m going to piggy-back on what beth said about it. Babies with reflux and MSPI have really immature digestive system and often times have a rough time with cereal. My 13.5 month old son still cannot tolerate rice! he had the HARDEST time with rice cereal as a baby too. Also, if you plan to keep using rice, you might try Beech-Nut or Earth’s Best brand b/c it doesn’t contain soy. Gerber and other brands do contain soy.I’ve seen Laura (our moderator) post something about Gripe water making reflux worse and it certainly did for my lil one! I am sure she’ll be around to post a link about the gripe water. She’s our link lady. LOLI totally agree about getting an increase on the PPI!Good luck!jilly782008-04-17 15:13:50

I tried at 6 months, didn’t go well…major gas, bloating ect. Tried every couple of month with no luck. Finally at about 14 months, they were able to tolerate it.As the person above me stated, there are many things to try. I would only give two additional pieces of advice and that is…first, don’t do too many things at once and second, give each change time so you know what causes which symptoms. If there are too many changes, or factors, it is hard to tell what is really going on. It is also difficult to tell how a change is going to effect the baby until thier little systems have a chance to adjust. Having said that, I understand when your baby is in pain, this is really hard to do…you want them to feel better! I have a hard time with this. My son (number 3 with MSPI, but first with reflux) was miserable at first on Prevacid. His lower GI symptoms were way worse than they were before taking it. However, within 4 or 5 days, he turned into quite a happy baby. Had I been giving him other stuff, I wouldn’t know for sure it is the Prevacid that is helping him. I may have ended up giving him more stuff than he needed or even causing other uncomfortable effects, so I wouldn’t really know how great he was just on Prevacid. Also, if I had decided right off that is was making him worse and quit giving it to him, he would still be a sad boy. -
