So awhile ago I posted about how great Nicholas was doing. WHY?? I totally jinxed myself. He just turned 4 months and now we’re back at like square one.
He’s started waking frequently at night, but not crying. He just will wake up and NOT go back to sleep. He also tries to arch after night feeds, but I swaddle him so tight, he really can’t. It’s so weird, b/c this is only at night. He sleeps GREAT during the day. I was thinking maybe he was sleeping TOO much during the day (5-6 hours), so I limited his naps, but this hasn’t seemed to help.Advice? I see that he needs to go up on his Prevacid a little bit. Not sure how to go about this, b/c I had to practically get down on my knees and BEG the GI to give him 7.5 3x a day. Has anyone faxed the office and asked for an increase? What has the response from your docs been? What have you said to them?April 2, 2008 at 1:43 pm #49764AnonymousInactiveForgot to mention. This is the only ped GI where I live. The next closest ped GI is in Denver, about 4 hours from where I live over a couple of mountain passes.
Nicholas COULD be teething, but I am not sure. He has kind of always liked his hands. He also does not try to arch at all during the day. This is only at night. He sleeps on a Memory foam wegde.April 2, 2008 at 9:39 pm #49776hellbenntKeymasteryes, I faxed!
start off w/ a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the facts (no feelings and no rambling emotions)
state current meds, doses, symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to say fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests in fax, ie: have you called in the increased prescription yet? THANK YOUI used Sandifer symptoms and just STATED dose from marci-kids w/o saying where it was from or anything, like: current dose is ___baby currently weighs ___ so therefore dose of _mgs per kilo is __,so I am hereby requesting an increase to this amount.April 2, 2008 at 9:43 pm #49779AnonymousInactiveThanks! Just curious, did the fax work? We do have an appointment on Friday and I was thinking of faxing the Maric-kids info ahead of time, so it can be read. Good idea??

here’s a sample I dug up (This is old, lol! doses were high for the dark ages lol! and look, I said please, LOL! but it WORKED & I did send along mrci-kids info- the ‘caracream’ stuff is like ‘zegerid’ today):Dr.____,
Jonah is now taking Prilosec & THANK GOD for this drug!!
It ‘kicked in’ on day 13 (it slowly began to take affect a bit before then).
Up until then, we also gave him the Zantac (.8 2x a day). We are now giving the Zantac ‘as needed’ , which is about once a day, day or night, it depends.
Despite how wonderful the prilosec is, it still does not seem to be enough. While we have seen some decrease in reflux symptoms (and more of a decrease then just the zantac alone!), they’re still there.
He continues to scream/shriek out in his sleep, making his sleep not restful. He also does this while awake. He arches his back, too, and exhibits Sandifer Syndrome movements/postures. Again, there has been a decrease, so we know the Prilosec is working.
He now weighs 11lbs 6oz (who knows, he could be up an ounce already since Monday when he was weighed!).
Is it possible for you to please increase the prilosec dosage?
We found a wonderful product to make a liquid suspension for the prilosec using the capsules! Dr. Loret de Mola mentioned he’d like the information. I’m faxing it along with this.
Also, a tip for parents to make the liquid Zantac more palatable: mix it w/ Mylanta Cherry Supreme. This kind of Mylanta does not have aluminum (it’s active ingredients calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide) & therefore does not cancel out the Zantac.
Thank you,

Good luck with faxing. I never had to, but I hope it works for you. In the meantime, maybe you could give an uneven dose before the bedtime feeding? I realize it may sacrifice another part of the day, but bad nights are worse than bad days, in my opinion!!! So maybe give 7.5 mg in the morning or whenever in the day, then give 15 mg before bedtime??? When my son’s dose wasn’t quite enough, I would give a dose in the morning so that he would take a good morning nap while my 2-year-old was awake, then by afternoon the baby would be in pain again, but I could deal with him better because my 2-year-old would be napping. Then I’d give a whopper bedtime dose so that we could all get some sleep! Just a thought while you await an increase.April 3, 2008 at 10:20 pm #49849AnonymousInactiveThanks! I actually thought of that; don’t know why I didn’t try it yet. So I will tonight. We see the GI tomorrow so I can BEGGGG for an increase. I’m thinking of fibbing and telling her that I’ve been giving him 30 mg a day total for like a week and that has REALLY been helping. Her hang-up about giving such a high dose is that stomach cramps is a side-effect of Prevacid and she thinks that a high enough dose will cause that. I’ve never seen any indication that his 22.5mg a day dose causes any stomach cramps. We’ll see. Wish me luck!
