Kaden (40 in tall and 35 lbs) age 3 years and 3 months old has a groin hernia that is going to require surgery. The hernia was “discovered” during his 3 yr checkup and over the last few months has gotten bigger and excruciatingly painful for him and now he has to have surgery to close it. Our dilemma is this: he is in a 5 pt harness eddie bauer 3 in 1 convertible seat and the shoulder staps adjust for height, but that darn clip in between the legs lands right on his groin area and CANNOT be moved, it is stationary and it KILLS HIM. I have no idea when his surgery will be. We have not even been called for a pre-op consult yet. I cannot take another 5 min. car ride with him screaming that it hurts. The pedi said he is not exaggerating the pain and recommended the booster type carseat with a seatbelt to strap the seat in. This is HARD for me. I am one of those “stay in the safest seat the longest” kind of people. It bothers me to move him this early. But I cannot torture him any longer. Any ideas? Is there a harness type seat that has a “crotch peice (for lack of better terminology) that can be adjusted?) or is there a REALLY safe booster for his stats?
HELP!!!!

It converts from a seat with the 5-point harness to a booster with the back but without the 5-point harness and then to a plain booster using the lap belt. There are pics (more product views) under the large pic of the seat that show the conversion. Would also save having to buy a plain booster seat when that time comes.March 31, 2008 at 11:39 am #49647AnonymousInactiveWe have the 3 in 1 convertable Eddie Bauer car seat as well. I know he’s not 40 pounds yet, but I can only imagine how painful the crotch clasp is for him. Maybe you could convert it to the booster seat now? All you do is remove all of the 5 point harness straps, and remove the brace thing that is underneath the carseat. Then he will still have the whole car seat with the full back, and you anchor it to the car and use the regular seat belt. I like to pull the seatbelt out all he way so it “locks” and then buckle Ben in. I just feel a little more secure that way. MFPIx22008-03-31 18:56:37

But I would think that if you can convert him to the highback booster until the surgery and then put him back in the harness afterwards then maybe your car rides will be better. I sure hope they can help him soon.

I had NO idea our carseat did this!!! I am going outside to check it out. And to think I can save the $ AND covert it back to the 5 pt harness once he heals is making my day. Thank Goodness for you ladies!! Thanks Sheri!ok– edit here…I am LMAO right now. I just told DH and he started laughing. He was like “aren’t we stupid…that’s the “3” in the 3 in 1″ I think reflux has taken it’s toll on our brains….jilly782008-03-31 15:48:10

March 31, 2008 at 9:02 pm #49677AnonymousInactivegood luck with his surgery—-i hope they don’t put you off for a long time. i am assuming you are referring to an inguinal hernia? they are more common in boys than girls. i have had 5 children with this type of hernia—–4 girls and 1 boy. the twins had double inguinal hernias. my son was the only one that had pain with his hernia—he was around 13. sylvia was 2 when her’s was repaired. sammie and the twins were somewhere around 3-4 years old.
my husband also had this same type of hernia. i am sure i had one when i was a little girl, because i remember a bulge that would come out in that area every so often—but it was never repaired and eventually disappeared. one of my docs said that they will sometimes close on their own???? i have never had a bulge in that area again, but i have had some unexplained pain on that side over the years.

yes it is an inguinal hernia! thanks! i think i’ve only heard the “medical” term one time. lol. i hope it doesn’t take them long to get him in too. the pedi said he has a large “canal” that should have gotten smaller now. 🙁 is the surgery hard on the kids? i don’t know anything about it.April 1, 2008 at 9:57 am #49699AnonymousInactiveisaacsmom618 wrote: Good luck with the surgery!
