Infantreflux.org | Do we need an increase in dose?

Jackson is now 7 months and 19.5 pounds. He is on 30 mg of prevacid solutabs a day (15 mg in the morning and 15 mg at night). We do the whole empty tummy thing as much as possible and try to wait 30 minutes until the next meal after his medicine. He has started solids (pureed fruits, veggies and oatmeal) and seems to like them. He is doing great in so many ways- crawling, pulling himself up constantly and even trying to walk! But, he is spitting up all over the place and this morning it smelled very acidic. My Mom, who is a bit of an old fashioned nurse of 30 years, recommended that I taste it to see if it burned my throat. She claimed that this is what nurses would have done in the old days. When she recommended this, I said “That is so disgusting, Mom!” But, I will just about do anything for my son, so I did it! Sadly, it tasted pretty acidic to me. He has gotten clingier and his naps have gone down hill too. My question is, do we need to up his dose? It seems so high already. WHEN WILL THIS ROLLER COASTER END????

I had to smile about tasting it…my stepdad is a “taster” of everything (from brake fluid to checking milk to see if it’s sour) and I’ve picked up the habit from him…you really CAN learn alot about what’s going on from tasting, oddly enough!

I’d check the marci-kids website but I *think* that it’s probably tops out at 30mg.

Maybe try some cherry supreme mylanta in between?? I’m not sure how that works with the zantac.

I’m so sorry that you’re going through this with him. My son, too, starting becoming a puke-monster again not long after passing 7 months (he’s 8 months now) and from what I hear this is the worst time for some of them…when they become very active. Is he teething, too? That can really increase the refluxing, too. Hope you can get some relief for him (and you!) soon!

Missy- has Xavier’s reflux improved as you have approached 8 months or is it the same? How much does your son weigh? Your prevacid dose is significantly lower than mine.

Tasting it doesn’t gross me out at all…I’m a ‘taster,’ too, I guess, LOL

if you have any zantac maybe you can add that in, too? (4 hrs seperate from the prevacid)

Xavier’s only 15 lbs at 8 months…we rechecked his dose last week and we’re still sitting at the high end, we can go up one more increment to 26mg total a day…but for now that’s it.

His reflux seems to be leveling off again, thankfully!!! Now it’s just back to breaking the “bad habits” that he picks up so quickly when his reflux gets bad…like having to be held constantly or he’ll pitch a fit! LOL

It DOES get better, promise!

Wow, I remember feeling the exact same way just about 3 months ago when my son Nathan was 7 mos old. He had been doing well for awhile and then he started getting worse again — with the amt of spit-up and with the pain. Nothing was new and he wasn’t sick or anything, and it all settled back down within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, so I’m assuming it was just the reflux peaking at 7 mos like many other moms mention??? The good news is that since that time, he has been doing SO well (knock on wood!) — even better than he was before the peak. And he’s on the exact same dosage/timing as your little guy. So, if you want you can try to push for a dosage increase, maybe it will help. But just know that chances are good this is just the “last hoorah” for reflux for Jackson (I’m hoping for you!)

This is truly the only place in the world where you find other people who sample spit up! I love it. Laura, I do have some zantac and I am going to give him some tonight. I will also try some mylanta, Missy. Paula, thanks for the encouragement! I certainly hope that this is Jackson’s last hoorah! I have been teery all day just thinking about how tough this road has been. My son has been so tough throughout it all and has tried so hard to not let reflux get him down! He is my little champ.

Too funny about “tasting”. You gals are braver than I.

My dad is a “smeller”. he smells EVERYTHING. Mostly before he eats/drinks it, but he’ll also smell random things. He’ll smell his can of soda before he drinks it initially and before every sip thereafter. Even though he smelled it to begin with. It’s VERY entertaining.

My ds is younger than yours. You’ve been at it longer than I. Hope it starts to level off like one of the pp’s said.

LOL I thought I was the only one who tasted and smelled the pit up!! Sadly it’s so acidic poor babies. I do agree without this site I was going crazy. My only thing is that trying to convince that the MARCI kids is not a drug company to my GI/ he keeps saying they work for them? -Daniela
