I’m completely and totally frustrated with the physicians in my local area. We’re 50 miles from a “major” hospital and I’ve always trusted our local people to send us there if we need to be…but this is getting silly.
Xavier started power-hurling last Saturday, bright and early in the morning, and continued throughout the day…every single thing that went in, no matter if we did an ounce at a time or three, came back out. Sometimes within a matter of minutes, sometimes he “saved it up” for three hours before launching it back. By Saturday evening we were concerned enough to take him to the local ER. “Must be his reflux.” *Sighs* That’s all we ever hear when we say “vomitting, no fever, no diarrhea” and “he’s got a history of acid reflux”. Like, because he’s a reflux baby there’s NO WAY he might get a stomach bug.
Dr says “Feed him less at a time”
I say “It isn’t working, we’ve already tried it and he’s down to not wanting to eat now. An ounce every three hours or so”
Dr says “Give it some time”
So, we go home and keep up the fight of keeping him hydrated.
Monday comes and he’s still throwing up. I take him to his ped’s office and see a nurse practitioner. After keeping us waiting for 2 HOURS in the lil 6 x 7ft room and sticking him for blood and doing an abdominal xray….must be his reflux.
Dr says “Try feeding him less at a time”
I say “We’ve tried that, it isn’t working.”
Dr says “Clear liquids…better yet, only pedialyte.”
I say “He won’t take it, he hates the taste.”
From there we just get in a battle of wills. Mine wins when I walk out and ask for his records to be sent to me at home and I’ll find a different office.
So, I take him to a different office today. We’re on day 5 of throwing up at least two or three times a day. Guess what??? Must be his reflux AGAIN.
So, I catch this dr up on what we have so far. We’re “maxxed out” on his prevacid dose at this point…30 mg a day. She’s in shock at the amount he’s taking “That’s an adult dose!” Uhhuh. He’s still not running a fever, he’s still not “sick”….so, ok, maybe it IS his reflux…but what are we going to DO about it????
Dr says “We got him an appointment with the peds GI guy to see what they want to do….in three weeks.”I say “Three WEEKS???”Dr says “That’s as early as they can get him in. In the mean time (you guys are going to love this) Feed him less at a time.”I (again) say “It doesn’t work, we’ve tried it.”Dr says “Well, it’s about all we can do for now.”Do YOU guys have any other ideas??? We already thicken his bottles to sludge with a tsp of cereal per ounce and we give him his prevacid plus some cherry mylanta for breakthrough, we do the whole hold him upright stuff…I feel like we’re hitting that “worst case” time and have NO idea where to go now!! It seems like he’s got to have the absolute worst case of reflux ever known to man for all the “I don’t know”s I get when I ask anyone around here. And if I hear “Feed him less at a time” one more time I’m going to pull my hair out!! We’re down to feeding him an ounce every three hours…and he’s STILL throwing it up!XaviersMom 2008-03-26 14:33:10 March 26, 2008 at 2:46 pm #49385AnonymousInactiveCan I ask what he is eating? What formula and cereal, any other solids, or if he is BF are you on any type of elimination diet? My daughter would projectile vomit regularly until we switched her to Neocate. The other option would have been TED if I were breastfeeding. She literally couldn’t tolerate anything else. Also, how are his BMs?
March 26, 2008 at 2:55 pm #49388AnonymousInactiveHe’s on Isomil….has been for the last 6 months or so. We’ve VERY SLOWLY added a few solids in the last month and a half…sweet potatoes and squash and rice cereal which, up until Saturday he’d tolerated very well.
His BM’s are normally soft but solid…the last few days, though, have been much looser. Not quite diarrhea, but really soft. Can these lil guys change so suddenly???We have the added problems of tender lungs and because of all the throwing up he’s got some aspiration wheezing going on so I’d really like to get this stopped and noone seems to know what to doXaviersMom2008-03-26 14:57:09
March 26, 2008 at 3:34 pm #49390AnonymousInactiveI will say that my little guy could not do squash and still has a rough time with it!! His only veggie that he can do really seems to be sweet potatoes and corn and he is just now able to do carrots in small doses. I’m not sure what it is about squash and green beans but he would puke like crazy if we fed him that (and I had a silent refluxer!)
I wish I had more advice, I sure hope a GI can see you a little sooner. Did any of these health “professionals” LOL even consider rotavirus or anything of that nature?!jilly782008-03-26 15:40:15
March 26, 2008 at 5:52 pm #49396AnonymousInactiveGeez, the last thing I need is for it to actually BE rotovirus! LOL
The pediatrician that I pulled his records from and I went around about the rotovirus vaccine…she wanted to give it to him, I told her that after the first dose was given to him even though he was coughing and sputtering I wouldn’t allow them to give it to him again…I would give it to him, but not them. They wouldn’t allow ME to administer it, so he didn’t get it. THEN I get the whole “Rotovirus could kill a baby” lecture. I told her I’d make sure no one had s**t on their hands before they touched him. He’s done very well with the sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, and cereal. Actually…we’ve had to use food coloring to turn fruits orange so he’ll even go near them to try them out! Not only do I have a refluxer…but apparently he likes the color orange so much he won’t touch a food that is a different color. Figures, huh?My husband and I are seriously thinking about taking him the 50 miles this weekend to go to the ER at the major hospital that happens to be home of the elusive peds GI so that we can get him seen sooner. Until then…I’m buying stock in laundry detergent!March 26, 2008 at 6:31 pm #49400hellbenntKeymasterok, silly question: is the vomitting affecting his weight gain?
next thought (excuse the ramblings): a swallow study to find out about aspiration. something to ‘demand’ if you DO go to the ERnext: if you DO go to the ER, find out WHEN the ped GI is on call…next: isomil? is that soy? maybe try neocate….it can take 2 weeks to show full affect…next: what are you thickening with? beechnut and some ‘organic’ brands are ones that do not have any milk or soy proteins…next: what if you don’t thicken? you say it doesnt help anyway?ok I’m out of ‘nexts’ LOL!March 26, 2008 at 6:50 pm #49402AnonymousInactiveRambling I can handle!!
The vomitting has, at this point, stopped his weight gain completely and he’s slid back to a whopping (LOL!) 15 lbs at almost 8 months old. He was up to 15lbs, 6oz before this started…(Again, it doesn’t seem like it matters to anyone else except US that he’d lose weight since “He’s not dehydrated *yet*” (I heard this from two of the three drs)I’ll definately find out when the GI is on call…however, I’m certain that even if it’s not HIM that we get to see, the drs there are MUCH better than the local-yokels that we deal with here. The hospital we take him to is where he was in the NICU for 5 weeks and when we took him in for vomitting at 8 weeks old, they’re the ones who diagnosed the reflux to begin with.Isomil is the soy *brand* of Similac. I’m a little leary of changing to neocate because of all the stuff I’ve heard about it not tasting good and X-man’s not a big eater anyway…normal for him is only 3oz every 3-4 hours. I’d hate to start onto something that tastes even worse…and Isomil is pretty nasty! LOLRight now we’re using Gerber brand rice cereal, but I’m going to head to the store and get Beechnut and give it a try…sure can’t hurt!!!Thickening, right now with whatever is going on with him, isn’t making any difference over using the Dr Browns bottles unthickened…so I’m not sure which way to go. Either thicken with the standard bottle or unthickened with Dr Browns. Any ideas???March 26, 2008 at 6:56 pm #49403hellbenntKeymasterhmmm. well, I might just try the neocate? it’s a tough call, though. but, if the vomiting is from the soy and if the soy is exacerbating the reflux, well, then it might be worth a shot. the way a lot of parents make the switch is to slooowwwwly add the neocate to the ‘old’ formula until after a loooong time the bottle is completely neocate…
March 26, 2008 at 7:06 pm #49405AnonymousInactiveI have heard too that Neocate tastes nasty. We use Elecare. It’s the same type of formula as Neocate, just made by different manufacturer. It’s not as watery and smells okay to me (how good can formula smell?). If you decide to try one of these formulas, make sure you do the switch gradually. The last thing you need is a GI upset. If he eats 3 ounces, try one day 2 ounces his old stuff, one ounce the new stuff. Next day 2 ounces new, one ounce old. And so on. If/when you do go to the new ER, ask a doc about adding Splenda or some other sweetener to the Neocate/Elecare. That’s what we do and it works out okay. Use the smallest amount possible if you go this route.
Also, if you’re not happy with the cereal as a thickener, maybe try something like Simply Thick. Simply Thick is used by hospitals and nursing homes to thicken liquids for patients. I know that our NICU here uses it to thicken formula for preemies. You can get this is packets or a pump with botle. It’s a gel similar to hair gel that thickens without changing the taste of the liquid. Make sure you get the nectar variety, not the honey. It’s a little pricey, but I know you can get it off e-bay for much cheaper.March 26, 2008 at 7:15 pm #49410AnonymousInactiveJust a thought also on the throwing up with no fever. My dd started throwing up for absolutely no reason when she was 2 years. No fever. She didn’t have a bug (this lasted for weeks).
We went to doc after doc. No one could find the reason. Finally, we took her to the ped GI (really hard to get an appt. around here). They did a urinalysis on her and it came back that she had…..
A urinary tract infection. The doc siad that since she was so young, she couldn’t verbalize this to us. He said one of the ways a UTI manifests itself in young children and in the elderly is vomiting. Once she started on the antibiotics, the vomiting stopped.Just a random thought. Also, get the clear Pedialyte. We hide it in my kids favorite drinks (juice, formula, etc.) They never know the difference.kdub2008-03-26 19:16:15
March 26, 2008 at 8:49 pm #49418AnonymousInactiveI know this isn’t what you want to hear either, but my son’s reflux got dramatically worse right around the 7 month mark. I have no idea why, but it really was bad there for a bit, and then by about 8-9 months he had totally stopped spitting up except for a bit when he had a cold/drainage. So, maybe it could just be a reflux peak???
However, I think I might try to take out the solids from his diet right now. If it IS a virus, then he shouldn’t be on them really anyway, and maybe the reflux is acting up because of them. If it doesn’t help to take them out, then just put them slowly back in.Keep us posted on how he is doing!!June 7, 2008 at 7:56 am #52316AnonymousInactiveDr. Brown’s sells the Y cut nipples for their bottles.
