My 10 month old Daughter is having a Upper and Lower Endoscopy on March 13. She has been through it all since birth. Been on Zantac, now Prilosec. Tried Neocate, should would not drink it. been through all sorts of blood work, urine tests, all came back normal. We are trying to find out why she will not eat. She is fussy all night from 5-9pm, wakes during the night and cries. She’s has had “Reflux” since 3 months old. Dr says she is FTT (Failure to Thrive). She only weighs 14 lbs 8oz. Any tips on this procedure for her or us as parents?
Thank youNicoleMarch 11, 2008 at 10:20 pm #48958AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry to hear about the trouble that you are having with your daughter! Is she mspi? (milk/soy protein intolerant) I ask b/c you said you tried her on Neocate and typically that is for babies who cannot have any milk or soy proteins (even milk protein in Nutramigen and Alimentum). Just curious what kind of formula/milk your baby is drinking now. A lot of the time peds/GI docs will tell you to just give the baby neocate “cold turkey” when switchin them from another kind of formula and they will have a total taste aversion and refuse to drink it. The transition to Neocate or any hypo formula should be really slow, adding in just 1oz at time to the current formula, then 2oz the next day and so on until they are used to the taste. Probably no help to you now, but I wonder if taste aversion is what happened to your lo. Also, is the prilosec your daughter takes a compounded (syrup)? I know that many moms on here have said that those did nothing for their babies b/c they are usually not compounded properly by pharmacists and become unstable in the bottle very quickly. I would recommend visiting http://www.marci-kids.com and check out the dosing information for your lo’s weight for a good PPI drug like Prevacid (solutabs), Zegerid, or Nexium.
Also, about the endoscopy, my son Landen had one at 5.5 months b/c his reflux and other symptoms (spoon refusal, sleep feeding, vomiting certain pureed food, etc) lead the GI doc to believe he had allergic esophogitis. The endoscopy is actually really fast. I think it was just harder on me handing Landen over to an anesthesiologist. he couldn’t eat after midnight the night before, so we fed him at 11:59 LOL and then he fussed a bit the next AM, but before we knew it, he was whisked away for the test and then I was called back to the recovery area where he was groggy and fussy and the test was over. It was VERY quick and by noon that day he was drinking and sleeping (well he was a bad sleeper LOL) like usual. His tests came out fine other than what we knew— reflux!! I hope that you get some answers for your daughter!!March 12, 2008 at 7:53 pm #48964AnonymousInactiveAnother suggestion for the aversion to the Neocate taste. My ds is on Elecare and didn’t like the flavor of it at first. My ped GI suggested adding a small amount of Splenda to sweeten it. If you decide to do this, I would definitely ask your doc about this first. And use the smallest amount of Splenda possible. We use one packet in each bottle and he LOVES the taste of the Elecare now (wonder why? LOL). Also, like the pp said, slowly transition from one formula to the next.
Hope this helps! -
