My sweet 6 week old baby girl has reflux. She has been on Zantac for 3 weeks now and it is not helping! She actually is getting worse – this morning she projectile vomitted her entire bottle – vomitting 3 times in a row – out both her nose and mouth. The end part was thick and creamy, like it was already digesting. It causes her to stop breathing – this morning’s episode left her white as a ghost after about 40 seconds not breathing.
I think the Zantac is actually causing the projectile vomit because she only does this after I give her the medicine. Or maybe it’s the peppermint flavor?I can’t take this anymore – I’m afraid one of these times she won’t start breathing again!Has anyone else experienced this violent vomitting after giving Zantac? We suspect milk allergy also and switched her to Alimentum about a week and 1/2 ago. But I don’t feel anything is working. Please help.January 31, 2008 at 8:07 pm #47891hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!

February 3, 2008 at 7:07 pm #47956AnonymousInactiveBless your heart! My first daughter did the exact same thing on the zantac. It was awful. I sooo feel your pain. The biggest help for me was finding http://www.marci-kids.com
This is when we got her on the right meds. The right meds with the combination of Neocate formula (which I HIGHLY recommend) turned a screaming baby into a different child.I hope it gets better soon. I know how hard it is.Hang in there!February 4, 2008 at 10:37 am #47966AnonymousInactiveI was wondering how your doctor reacted to you asking about the meds, my daughter is on zantac and cereal in her formula. I begged for the zantac and they were not happy about giving it to me. It has calmed her a little bit, but now I feel like she is getting worse again. She is now spitting up whole bottles everyday and I do not know whether it is from the cereal or the zantac. I feel like my doctor keeps telling me she will grow out of it, but she crys and fusses all day and does not sleep during the day at all. I am so frustrated and at my wits end, how do i go about addressing my doctor?

My pediatrician only gave zantac. I called back and asked for a referral which they gladly gave.February 5, 2008 at 7:14 am #48004AnonymousInactiveThanks for the advice, I was at the doctor last night and they are getting me into a pediatric gastro this morning.. It has gotten worse in last 12 hours. My daughter now can only keep pedialyte down. The website you referred to on a previous post was extremely helpful, so I would like to thank you. I have gotten more info in 24 hours just from being on these websites then I have in 4 weeks. Puts me at ease to know what others are going through
February 5, 2008 at 12:59 pm #48011AnonymousInactiveGo in as informed as you possible can. I’ve learned that I am my daughter’s voice so to speak. The more you know about reflux and treatment, the better. A lot of doctor’s under prescribe medications. Also, marci-kids has things you can print out and take to you doctor.
I hope it goes well! Hang in there! It will get better!MelissaFebruary 5, 2008 at 3:28 pm #48025AnonymousInactiveYes, if you haven’t seen the GI yet, I would print out the Marci-kids info and bring it with you!!! That is what I did, and I know it is what got us on the right meds at the right dose for her. Good luck!
February 5, 2008 at 6:12 pm #48030AnonymousInactiveThank you for the advice everyone. We started Emma on Prevacid this weekend. She has vomited twice since. I’m not sure how long to give the medicine to work. And it is hard to get her to swallow it all! I hope it works. I don’t know how much more I can take. Her Pediartician did mention pyloric stenosis – but we are trying the prevacid first.
February 6, 2008 at 9:06 am #48040AnonymousInactivewent to the gi yesterday andruled out pyloric stenosis, but was not entirely happy with what they decided to do. I feel like these doctors take baby steps and make the child sufer. Was wondering if anyone’s child was on zantac and mylanta before they put them on a ppi. Asked about changing to Neocate and she did not want to change too much at once. Now she has upped the dose of zantac and added mylanta along with taking the cereal out of her formula. Thankully my daughter grayson has stopped vomitting. I thnk it was the cereal causing it. I feel like this will neverend, but thabks to all of you I see there is hope.
I know the one thing that works for me is carrying her in the baby bjorn. It is the only way she sleeps during the day. Just happy she closes hers eyes even for a little while. Doc said it isbecause of gas, not acid reflux, that is why she added the mylanta instead of putting her on a ppi
February 6, 2008 at 9:51 am #48041AnonymousInactivehhmmmm……..have they done any test that says t’s not reflux? If not, I would ask them too. I went through this with our first dd.
Did they do a test that ruled out polystenosis?MelissaFebruary 6, 2008 at 12:18 pm #48042AnonymousInactiveshe said she thinks its both gas and reflux so that is why she put her on the mylanta and inc zantac….. today is just as bad. grayson can not sleep because she wakes up in pain she either cries or is fidegty and wines all day
February 6, 2008 at 12:43 pm #48043AnonymousInactivehas any test been run?
February 6, 2008 at 1:10 pm #48046AnonymousInactiveNo i just had a sono done to rule out pyloric stenosis
