I am so tired! Every time I think that Jackson is out of the woods, we have a flare up. I have no idea why, but he has been refluxing SO much today. He has also had a high-pitched, unusual (and scary) cry several times today. He is on a strong dose of prevacid, but I am not sure if we should try something else. On top of the reflux, he has been sleeping poorly because he is rolling onto his tummy so much in his crib and it scares him when he does it. He has also had a lot of painful gas before bedtime. Before all of this drama, he was sleeping 12 hours a night on his back! Why is it that when every time I think everything is figured out and life is wonderful, everything blows up in my face?
One more thing to complain about… I feel like I can’t ever distinguish normal baby stuff from reflux. When Jackson is fussy and fighting sleep, my first inclination is to assume it is reflux based upon his past. But, he IS a baby and I know that all babies get fussy and fight sleep. Still, I am so frustrated because I feel like maybe I forget to rule out things like tiredness, gas, etc because I always assume reflux. Maybe he does not need new meds- maybe he is just fighting sleep to be social. Who knows! Being a first time Mom is so confusing as it is! Reflux just adds another dimension. This can be over any day now!!!
January 21, 2008 at 6:46 am #47529AnonymousInactiveNig HUG to you. It is so confusing. Does he have a fever, is he teething? These things tend to aggrivate cooper’s reflux and he is at an age where he could be teething. you could always try some motrin or tylenol to see if that helps him any at all. Best of Luck.
January 21, 2008 at 9:36 am #47534AnonymousInactiveI had to laugh at your post because parenting is SUCH a guessing game! I don’t know when that will ever stop! To this day I still question Sarah’s moods and wonder if it’s all going back to reflux. Like you, I was a first time mom with Sarah so all I knew was REFLUX! I have no idea what a normal baby is like! I remember my mom telling me on several occassions “Amy, she IS a baby. You can’t expect her to be content 24/7”. That always brought it back into perspective for me.
I agree with Beth…teething could be it. He could also be coming down with a cold, virus, flu, etc…Is he trialing any solids? I can’t remember what formula he is on? It could be so many things but hopefully whatever it is he will get back to normal soon! HUGS!
January 21, 2008 at 12:10 pm #47535AnonymousInactiveI know! That is exactly how I feel, Amy. I realize that he is a baby and will have just generally fussy days, but fussy days look the same as reflux days! I am always trying to distinguish one from the other and I just cannot seem to do it. Some people say that they just know what each of their baby’s cries mean. I wish that were me! As to the trouble shooting, Beth, he may be teething. Tylenol seems to have eased some of the high pitched screaming. He had a low grade fever this morning (99.7), so that could also be it. He has been eating some oatmeal for about a week too. He has been spitting up so much more over the last couple of days and is sleeping poorly. Hopefully, this will be short lived. Right now, he is crying after napping for just 45 minutes. Ugh!
January 21, 2008 at 1:47 pm #47537AnonymousInactiveCan you hold off on the oatmeal and try again in a month? If things are going backwards, then I would just hold off if you have only been doign the oatmeal for a week. Our first child had thickened formula but could not take any other solids until after a year old. He just couldn’t handle it. Carter on the other hand, was our garbage disposal from a very early age! He would choke a lot (another issue entirely) but his GI tract was able to handle solids much earlier. Some babies are just not ready.
Hang in there! could be teeth, but could be oatmeal. If you stop the oatmeal and he gets better, you will have your answer, if there is no change, then that was not the issue.I am hoping it gets better for you all soon!!!!!January 21, 2008 at 7:44 pm #47558AnonymousInactiveOkay, I just have to write this to vent about my day. This is long, but you may find humor in it. It seriously could have gone down as one of the worst days of all time. Jackson woke up this morning screaming. He was uncooperative when I tried to take his temp, but I got an ear reading of 100.3. While he was screaming, my dog came in a peed on my son’s nursery carpet. Then, my sister let her dog out and my dog ran out the door and up a busy street. She and I had to chase after the dog with dog treats while my son was screaming. I finally got him to sleep and he woke up shortly after screaming again. I noticed some drainage from his ear and decided to take him to the doctor. While I was getting dressed, my neighbor knocked on the door and said that our hose was running and squirting everywhere. It was cold last night and it must have frozen and busted. Turns out, Fed ex had dropped off all of our paper work for the house that we just purchased and the water from the hose had completely soaked all of the papers! I decided to not worry about it and I left the house to go to the doctor. Before I left the driveway, I LOCKED MY BABY IN THE CAR! My husband, who has the only other key, was an hour away. I called 911 and 2 firetrucks and 3 police cars showed up! Humiliating! It took them forever to break into my car and when the car alarm went off, Jackson screamed for what seemed like forever. After they got the car door opened, I went to the doctor where I learned that Jackson had his first ear infection and his eardrum had burst. Poor baby! When I got home, I gave him a bath and fed him his bottle. I laid him on the floor to put his pajamas. I accidentally laid his head on the carpet where the dog had peed earlier today. I wiped his head with a baby wipe, but ultimately, my precious baby boy went to bed smelling like dog urine. Worst Mom ever? I WIN THE PRIZE today!!!
January 21, 2008 at 9:03 pm #47563AnonymousInactiveWOW, you should send that in to Reader’s Digest!!! I’m sorry for the awful day, but it’s good that you can find humor in it, too — and you are NOT the worst mom ever. Things will get better soon (sounds like they couldn’t get much worse!) At least you found your answer for the reflux flare 🙂
January 21, 2008 at 11:32 pm #47567AnonymousInactiveOMG!! LOL LOL!! This is sad to say, but thank you. You just made my day so much brighter. I thought I was having a bad one, but yours takes the cake. Hugs!!
January 22, 2008 at 8:11 am #47569AnonymousInactiveKatie- your day sounds like a sitcom! POOR MAMA, POOR BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope Jackson feels better soon. All the rest ( the rug, the hose, the important papers-long list!) can be fixed! I send a big hug to you and your family!Luzaria2008-01-22 08:12:09
January 22, 2008 at 8:58 am #47570AnonymousInactiveLOL, I needed this! You are a GREAT mama that you handled all of that and you are still sane! Thanks for the story! Make sure you write this down in a notebook or Jackson’s baby book so you can laugh with him about it some day!
January 22, 2008 at 2:35 pm #47590AnonymousInactiveOh my! And I thought some of my days were bad. But you’re bad day certainly tops them all!
I’m sorry about Jackson’s ear infection and burst ear drum. I hope he’s feeling better soon. Try not to feel bad. Babies are hard to read, even non-refluxers! I’ve had many, many, ocassions when I was sure my little guy was just as sick as a dog and I’d rush him to the doc only to find out he’s fine, he’s just crabby. And I’ve had plenty of times when I was sure he was just crabby, and it turns out he was sick. My son is ornery by nature, so it’s twice as hard to figure him out. My girls were so much easier to read.Anyway, I hope this passes soon and he’s back to feeling good and sleeping well.January 22, 2008 at 2:39 pm #47591AnonymousInactiveOMG!, Yes, you have to write that down, or at least print out your post. That is one for the memory book. Sorry to hear about Jackson’s ear. Poor little one, but at least you know now why he was so fussy. Hopefully, he’ll back to himself soon.
January 23, 2008 at 4:55 pm #47613AnonymousInactiveWhat a good story for perspective. Now if you ever think you are having a crappy day again then you can come back and read this……
It’s done wonders for my day too.January 23, 2008 at 6:27 pm #47620AnonymousInactiveThanks for all of your posts! Jackson is still not 100%. He is napping poorly and fussy. But, he has not done any high pitched screaming, so he must be better. We go back to the doc tomorrow to find out if his ear infection is clearing. The strangest thing is that he did not even act like he had an ear infection before his eardrum burst. He would cry like he had gas right before bedtime and that was it. He was not even crying before naps and he was napping really well. I just thought that he was getting gas right before bedtime, but maybe he was crying because of the ear infection. He did not have a fever until the day that I took him in and there were just no other signs of anything going wrong! Makes me nervous that I will never know what is going on with him.
