Hi,
I am thinking that my DS has a MPI, I don’t know if it is soy yet. He is 8 weeks old ans has relux and real bad colic type symptoms. He is taking zantac 1.6 mL BID. He was spitting up alot (2-3 times pre feeding) and it was usually really mucousy. His poop is stringy, and generally fussy when nursing and after. He has not been a good sleepr recently either. He would arch and wiggle and pull off and on the breast….BUT in the last few days he seems to be doing better. Less spit-up less fussyness. I have really cut out dairy (except I did have cream in my coffee yesterday) for about 1 week or so. Do you think that that may have been the problem? I do “hear” him reflux though but he isn’t fussy when it happens though. He does seem like a different baby in the last few days…..Keeping my fingers crossed….Just a side note….in the evening his eyes get really red and puffy and watery? Any thoughts on that….could it be related to the MPI?January 20, 2008 at 9:26 pm #47525AnonymousInactiveHi!
After 6 weeks and after much deductive skills, I found out my baby (who is now 5 months old) has MPI.
His symptoms: green leafy and mucuousy poop, excema on his forehead, spitting up a ton, lots of crying and crunching up of his body, screaming, obviously in pain.
To find out if it was MPI, I gave him a bottle of soy formula for a whole day (and pumped my milk to keep up my supply but dumped it out) and he was a MUCH happier baby. He actually started sleeping! Yes, he spit up still but he stopped screaming, it was like it didn’t bother him at all.
So for the next two weeks I alternated breastfeeding and soy milk while I eliminated ALL dairy out of my diet. Anything with butter, milk cheese etc including anything cooked with dairy in it (including whey or casein in the ingredients list). He slowly improved and after two weeks I solely started breastfeeding and I had a baby who slept, cooed and was generally a normal happy baby. Yes, he still spit up but that is just a laundry problem. I didn’t even have to put him on medication – which I never wanted to do in the first place (even though the doctors pushed it).I think you should stick with the “no dairy” but be very strict . No dairy in ANYTHING. It sounds to me a lot like my experience. Now I have a happy 5 month old sleeping 9+ hours at night and who is starting to slow down on the spit ups (no longer massive amounts).
Hang in there, it does get better!
