I know it’s really close to Christmas so I am not expecting a lot of response to this post right away, but I am wondering if any of your kids have had speech delays because of their Reflux? Landon is 17 months 15 adjusted and from what I have read is on a 12 month speech development. Do you think it might be from the reflux?

Does he seem to understand a lot (babies understanding of words is usually so much better than there speech and often a better way to judge their development). can he let you know what he wants using non verbal communication?
Alana is about your bubs age (she was also a prem) and she is really only saying about 5 words (daddy, mummy, puppy, baby, bubbles-yes she loves bubbles). SOme of the other bubs in my mums groups have extensive vocabs (ie lasange). There is alreadly so much variability at this age that it might be hard to tell if it is really a delay (IYKWIM). That being said I have read a few posts that talk about delayed speech with their reflux children. If you are really concerned would you be able to get him assessesed? Is your Dr concerned?December 23, 2007 at 3:52 pm #46664AnonymousInactiveHe can say Mamma, Da da, and NO! We have heard him say them, but only wile he’s upset or crying. When he wants/ Needs things he Cries and cries we just guess until we get it right. As far as understanding he Knows what No means but thats it.
We have not been to our ped for a well check up since his 1year, because every time we go he is sick, He’ll be 18 months Jan.19th as long as he is well we’ll have an 18month check up, I am planning on seeing just how far behind he is then.December 23, 2007 at 4:50 pm #46665AnonymousInactiveHailey had speech delays. When I mentioned it to our ped, he sent her to get her hearing tested. It turns out that she had a severe hearing loss from fluid in her ears. She had tubes put in and her hearing really improved. She still has articulation delays (not from hearing, but I suspect from oral apraxia) which may or may not be related to the reflux and feeding problems. Speech delays can be common with refluxers, but each child is an individual. If you’re concerned mention it to your ped and see if they think it’s worthwhile to get him evaluated. Hailey’s speech really took off from 18 months- 2 years. Now she has a lot of words, but the articulation is off.

Alana is also not always reliable with the few words she has (I think our bubs are pretty close in age- she was five weeks early) although for some reason she always gets bubbles right). She does seem to understand a bit though and uses pointing and nodding her head or shaking her head to put across what she means. I think if you are worried I would try and get it checked out, even if it is at the end of the day only for your peace of mind.
