I have had a few moms call me asking about their reflux babies and what they should do. My advice to them usually varies. What I really want to say is get on a good ppi, make sure your on the right dose, and give it 3x a day. Many other things too of course, like the possibility of mspi and on and on. However when a mom first starts this journey their dr usually just prescribes zantac. I know that some babies do do well on zantac, but I also know it’s rare. My latest call is from a good friend of mine. I had a feeling her baby had reflux when I first saw her due to the babies congestion. I did not say anything though hopeing I was wrong and also not wanting to worry her. Well, the baby is two weeks old now and is in a lot of pain and the babies dr thinks it reflux. Anyway, I told my friend to go ahead and try the zantac since that is what the dr wants to do and also on the off chance that it would work. I mean it is much less expensive than a ppi. At least in my case it was. Anyway, there is a part of me that feels bad for telling her that because I know I would go straight for a ppi. I told her that too. So, all of this to ask you what would your advice be if someone asked you? Especially if it was a good friend of yours. Oh, I also sent her an e-mail with the marci-kids info and also Laura’s intro info. That way she can be prepared when she goes back to the dr.

I think we all know at the beginning of this journey, there is so much stress, yet we also know giving tons of information can be overwhelming. I think that sometimes, as well, Zantac does help some babies, and if you can neutralize acid instead of chemically shutting off the pumps, we would have all done that instead of a PPI, but it just wasn’t an option for the majority of us. Also, some insurance companies won’t pay for the ppi, or other meds, until you’ve proven a less expensive set of meds doesn’t do the job first, so there are a lot of factors.
I do think it’s good that you didn’t try to down her doctor, because we really need to feel like the person we are going to for help (our doctors) that they do know something. We all know that is not always the case, but it is not helpful to be doubting everything they are doing especially as a new mom but you did arm her with the marci information so she will have something to go on.I think you did great! I think all you can do is be a good friend, and listen, and offer advice when you know she will be receptive to what you are saying.Ann MarieDecember 21, 2007 at 4:18 pm #46617AnonymousInactiveI’d try the zantac for a week. If the dose is good and it still doesn’t do the trick, then I’d try for a good dose of ppi given properly and at least twice daily.
