My little boy is only 5 weeks old… he has some issues with crying alot and spitting up ALOT… i mean even when he hasnt just ate… He started out on similac advanced.. then was switched to Enfamil A.R. for his refluxing.. it helped with the reflux, but it made his poop to hard and he cried and cried and was very gassy and fussy… so then we were told he had a milk/soy protein allergy and reflux.. and we were switched to Nutramigen formula and zantac 3 times a day… Well the throwin up got worse (im guessing because the nutramigen is so thin) but the crying and sleeping got better…. So the doc now wants to add Prevacid 30 mg solutab once a day along with the zantac .7ml 3 times a day to see if that helps the throwin up. My question is…. How do they know he is milk/soy protein allergic, i mean wat are the symptoms to that… he never had diarrea or bloody poop… .. What if he just has reflux and can take regular Formula instead of the Nutramigen now that we know he has the reflux and is gettin medicine for it… Because when he was on the Regular formula he wasnt being treated for the reflux yet…

My son was MSPI and reflux although I think the reflux was worse and just got out of hand. His only definining symptoms was blood in the stool and any biopsy of his intestinal lining that showed blood and irritation. The throwing up is just going to happen with reflux, meds won’t help that, it’s the crying you are looking to get rid.February 12, 2008 at 6:22 pm #48180AnonymousInactiveI know this is old but for us – we found Nutramigen wasn’t right, it was very thin and my son didn’t actually like the taste. We switched to Alimentum and from there things were great. The biggest symptoms for us were my son’s constant diaper rashes and yeast infections. The Zantac helped his reflux immediately, and 3 weeks after hypoallergenic formula he stopped getting rashes constantly and was even happier then before.
In our case I wanted to try both at once, and if one wasn’t helping, taper it off later. It was worth the extra expense to do both at once and ensure he would get relief, then perhaps try reintroducing regular formula or cutting out the Zantac later.

Luckily, she has no problems taking the nutramigen for us, but ever since she was BORN, she had HORRIFIC diaper rashes… to the point where her little hiney was peeling skin, and around her anus looked like little blood blisters. After I stopped breastfeeding her around 3 months, they started slowing down, became more manageable, and when I FORCED my dr. to try a reflux medication, and I switched to soy… the problem has ALMOST cleared itself up. But her butt became red here and there, and as long as I took every preemptive measure to stop it from getting out of hand, it would heal before any severe rash errupted. Everything I am reading on this board, is steering me towards things my Dr. should of seen! A milk intolerance, reflux, everything… I love how you ladies (and occassional dads!) get together and discuss this, you’ve all been such a help and pleasure to read.
