My son is 2 months old and has been referred to a GI specialist after no luck with Zantac, Prevacid and thickened feeds. He’s made slight temporary improvements when doses were changed, but within a week he’s usually suffering terribly again. Things have been really bad with his reflux lately, and unfortunately we have to wait more than 2 weeks for his appointment with the GI specialist. We’re on the cancellation list.

I was just wondering what to expect at the first appointment with a pediatric GI specialist.

I am putting a lot of hope into a specialist- perhaps too much??

Do they really help?

I’m assuming at the first appointment they will just ask questons about his symptoms?

He’s been in so much pain lately and I just hope the specialist will know what to do to take some of it away. Things just can’t continue the way they have been.

We spent probably 45 min at our first and only appointment. He wanted symptoms, feeding information, sleeping info, spitting up info and everything we had already tried. By the point we got to him we were on Nutramigen and prevacid and seeing improvements so he didn’t make any changes, I think if we hadn’t seen progress he would have changed things. As my dh is a pharmacist and I work in the medical field as well, he didn’t ask to see us again, but I have emailed him a few times with questions/concerns and he has even okayed 2 dose increases over email with me, which I am sure isn’t typical, but that is our situation.
