Hi everybody,
Can a simple cold cause a reflux flare??? Nathan had an awesome week last week, but then my 2-year-old caught a cold and passed it onto him, and the last few days have been awful. Nathan’s reflux is definitely flaring…almost like he’s not on any meds! More spit-up, waking up from short naps screaming, etc. It did the same thing after his 2-month and 4-month shots, but this cold seemed so minor (not really that congested, just a little runny nose), that I was hoping it wouldn’t happen. He’s not showing any signs of ear infection, either — no fever and no ear pulling, so maybe it’s just the cold causing this?? If so, it’s going to be a LOOOONG winter 🙁
Thanks for any info/advice you can give!

do any of you temporarily increase meds for these kind of flares?? If so, does it help at all? I have a little extra Prevacid I could give but don’t want to waste it if it’s a lost cause and the only thing that will help is time…Thanks!!October 17, 2007 at 1:34 pm #44365AnonymousInactiveHi Paula,
Colds of any kind definitely cause Bryce’s reflux to flare. He had a cold last week and he was throwing up almost every bottle and was just miserable. I think all the drainage that goes down their throats causes the reflux to flare. At least that’s what happens to Bryce. I didn’t increase his dose because we would run out of meds before I could get more, but I did give him Mylanta between doses when he seemed extra acidy. Good luck! I hope he gets feeling better and his reflux calms down again.October 17, 2007 at 1:48 pm #44366AnonymousInactiveWhen Landen was in daycare he was constantly catching colds….the WORST was when he had RSV!! Yes, the drainage really flares up reflux! Time is the ultimate healer with this. Just try to make him as comfortable as possible. Saline, humidifier (we used dimetapp to dry up the drainage per our ped). I’m so sorry!! I hope the cold goes away FAST!

We did increase the meds a bit while she had the cold, but found that it didn’t do much. The problem was the drainage, and if we could reduce that, that’s what helped more. We gave her cold meds (which I know are now banned or something) and also used the benalyin plug ins, and also put baby vaporub on her chest. We kept her elevated to help with the drainage, and avoided large feedings b/c she was so filled up with mucous that it inevitably caused vomitting. Hope it passes soon.

I think it may have helped a little. If you see a chiropractor, take your baby while there sick and it helps a ton.
