We weaned DS off his prevacid and 3 weeks ago he was med free. In the last 2 days he is waking up at night a couple of times, has a runny nose and is congested, and is teething. So now I don’ t know what to do/think. How long does it take the symptoms to return if the reflux isn’t gone? Is this just symptoms from a cold/teething or does reflux wait this long to show signs? I really don’t want to put him back on meds. How long should I wait to see before I call the PedGI? Should I wait until he is over the cold if it is one? Argh!!!! I am so frustrated right now! I want to do the right thing, but I had my hopes up too and maybe I don’ t want to believe it could be the reflux. But DH is the negative one and is always the one to say…”oh oh that could be a sign that he’s refluxing” or something like that. I guess since I am the one that deals with all the timing/medicine/doctor issues, I don’t want it to be. But at the same time DH could be just overreacting and this is just due to a cold or teething.
Oh yeah and DS is 13 months, still bf 3 times a day and eating solids. We did the mspi thing early on with no results and since he’s been on prevacid he’s been a normal baby. And he gets a cold like 1 a month or more! Being the younger sibling and going out into public (and teething) he picks up everything.
Any ideas?

October 16, 2007 at 2:27 pm #44300AnonymousInactiveKim, we are in the same boat here. My son has been on the same dose of Zegerid for a LONG time now and we are constantly considering weaning him off it… as soon as we do, he comes down with a cold, or starts to cut a tooth.. and the reflux flares back up. I don’t know what the answer is.
I do know, however, that my daughter, who outgrew her reflux around 9 months, will still have flares if she is getting sick or if she has a cold/drainage. Maybe try some Pepcid complete or Mylanta and see if it helps him.

I know all to well how confusing it can be. I have had two refluxer and don’t know the difference between normal fussiness and reflux. I will say though if your lo has been off meds for three weeks and doing fine it sounds like your baby is reflux free. You could try some mylanta cherry supreme and see if that helps. I think it’s possible that your baby may be reflux free for the most part and possibly the cold has brought it back a little. I’m not a dr though. I would try the mylanta and see what happens. If you decide to try the mylanta do not get a generic brand. I made that mistake and it tasted horrible. The real thing actually tastes okay. Please let us know how it goes.October 28, 2007 at 3:05 pm #44732hellbenntKeymastermylanta or tums (jonah had a lot of teeth at 12 months when we got him off of meds, but now there are the quick dissolve kind)
or even pepcid complete should do the trick -
