I am crying as I am writing this post, Brian is 14 month now, but he is still struggling with eating, he is still on puree food, everytime when I feed him, his face looks like that he is beening torture, how will he ever learn to eat!!!!!????? Sometimes I want to sent him to daycare, then he may eat better, but he may get sick very often and not want to eat at all. Somtimes I think if I let eating up to him then he may eat better, but my sister-in-law let eating up to my niece, and she is still not eating. I have no way out.
Sharon Liu 2006-3-17 20:57:36 March 17, 2006 at 8:38 pm #4121AnonymousInactiveSharon, I don’t have any helpful ideas, but I hope things improve soon. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way!

I donĀ“t have any advice either — it seems tougher everyday, right? I really know it will get better, i just do not know when or how you will get there. We are struggling too… seems like all the non-eaters are having a specially hard time right now… hopefully it will pass soon.
Sending all my love
March 18, 2006 at 6:35 am #4138AnonymousInactiveBoy – did you read my post the other day. All I can say is it truly sucks. Never did most of us imagine that a baby wouldn’t want to eat…and we are blessed with our miracles that are born picky eaters.
I don’t know what words of advise I can offer as Christian is on boycott too. Just hang in there and keep up the good Mommy work. Your support is what it making him thrive and although sometimes are struggles – your love and guidance will make him a happy little boy.
March 18, 2006 at 8:47 am #4141AnonymousInactiveSharon, there was just a post a few days on feeding therapy. A few of us are seeing occupational therapist and speech pathalogist. I didn’t know that they start seeing babies in the hospital. A mom just posted yesturday with some great games they are teaching her toddler at therapy class, she is starting to get some results too.
My daughter is 7 months old and the therapist is trying to develop certain muscles and work on motor skills needed for swallowing and chewing that some babies just don’t develop… especially if they are refluxers. It’s more common than you think.
Start calling around and see what’s available in your area. Worth a try….I hope things get easier for you both soon!
Oh.. think his meds are at the right dose for his age and weight? 15 mgs of prevacid seems low, my 7 month old is on 30 mgs. split 3 x a day.
March 18, 2006 at 2:44 pm #4169AnonymousInactiveSharon, sorry it’s so hard! I’m in the same boat with Hailey- no solids and only sleep feeds. I know it will get better for us all. Hang in there.
March 18, 2006 at 8:38 pm #4183AnonymousInactiveSharon, I’m sorry you are going through this too. Alexis is very stubborn and it sounds like Brian is the same way. She does what she wants when she wants to. We still have eatting issues but they are much better than they use to be, just continue doing what you are doing. Alexis still hates feeding time, but now she does pick out snacks and feeds herself (such as an animal cracker, or a few cheerios it is not much but it is a start). She just never seems to be hungry and it seems like Brian is the same way. When we started her on the appetite stimulant around 20 months old she does much better, we only give it to her every other week but currently holding off on it due to her surgery. Alexis was on puree food for a long time as well she slowly transition to table food but very slowly, I started with buying the gerber graduate meals in the microwave containers and would use the food chopper to make the pieces really small so there was at least some texture and fed that to her. It got her use to the texture once she was able to tolerate that I started to decrease the amount I would mash up. She finally switched to table food but she still doesn’t like to chew and chipmunks her food or she would chew it completely and not swallow. A small meal takes at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours it is quite frustrating and some of the meals end up with lots of crying and screaming. Right now, is a whole new issue due to the surgery, we’ll see how she eats after she completely heals, keeping my fingers crossed!
March 18, 2006 at 9:24 pm #4188AnonymousInactiveThais, Laura – Today’s feeding is horrible, he fought like crazy, even when he opened his mouth, then he held food in his mouth for a long time without swallow, I truely think that we are going to a tude pretty soon!
Sarah – Brian has ST everyweek from EI, but it does not help at all, his ped gi wants to increase his prevacid to 22.5mg and discontinue the pepcid, but when I discontinue his pepcid, his eating got really bad, so I did not change anything, but I am thinking upper his prevacid dose tomorrow and keep the pepcid too.
Sue – I hope Alexis recover from the surgery soon. Alexis does sound a lot like Brian. Does she have any wt gain issue? When did you start Alexis on gerber graduate meal?
March 20, 2006 at 12:38 pm #4269AnonymousInactiveMy son did not start #3 gerber foods until 13 or 14 months old (and he was always over the 100% in weight). It was an out-of-the-blue scenario. All of the sudden one day, he gobbled it up – after months of refusing. I think they know when their stomachs are ready to handle it – digestion is hard work!
However, my neice hardly ever ate anything other than milk (she did not have reflux) and she’s a little string bean. Some kids just aren’t big eaters I guess.
March 20, 2006 at 9:29 pm #4319AnonymousInactiveAlexis was one of the refluxers that didn’t have any weight gain issues, she was always on the 50% for weight and 50-75% for height. So many people and MDs dismissed her eatting issues. We started Alexis on the Gerber graduate meals around end of her 14 months almost 15 months around the same age as Brian right now. We did a couple of bites of the chopped up meal along with her puree. Once she wasn’t spitting up or gagging on the spoonfuls I completely switched her. She is known for holding food in her mouth! We have tried brushing her teeth stimulating her gums with the different texture teething brushes but nothing seems to help she is just her own littler person and does what she wants to.
April 1, 2006 at 2:02 am #5111AnonymousInactiveSharon,
So sorry to hear that things are still so horrible with eating. I just thought I would ask and throw this out there…have you looked into allergies and other food problems that might be causing him pain when he eats? Just curious. After 17 mos of basically not sleeping, I tried to remove wheat and gluten from our diets nad this seemed to help Lucas’ sleep more than anything else we’ve tried. Not that it’s all better or anything, but improved. It just made me realize that I never went with that angle beyond teh MSPI stuff. Just thought I would ask. How much does he weigh? Lucas has been on a very high dose of zegerid for quite a while. I think he’s been on 40mg a day since he was about 18 or 20 lbs. I know Brian might not be that heavy yet, but upping the ppi can really help. Also, would trying a different ppi be an option for you? We’ve had such great luck with zegerid and it can be given whenever, not the rigid rules for before and after eating like other ppis. Hang in there!!!
April 6, 2006 at 9:21 pm #5576AnonymousInactiveAnne: I just saw your reply today, thank you. How do you remove all those things in your diets, so many food have them. Brian is 23 lb 12oz now, his new GI agrees to upper the Prevacid to 22.5mg, but he wants to discontinue the pepcid, but as soon as I decrease a little bit of pepcid, his feeding got so bad, so I did not change his med until this Monday, I upper his prevacid and keep the pepcid, I will ask the gi about Zegerid next time.
April 7, 2006 at 4:23 pm #5653AnonymousInactivemany moms have found that you can’t take the zantac/pepcid out of hte mix and have the baby still feel okay even though the docs push for that….I would do whatever you can to get him to feel better. I know Lucas was on a much higher dose than Brian at that age and weight…I would really investigate why he can’t be on 30mg of prevacid, or switching to a high dose of zegerid….Good luck!
