I’ve been eating some hidden dairy for several weeks now, and all seems to be going fairly well. Ben does have some bumps on his arms, but they were there before the dairy addition, and they have not worsened during the trial. (I think it’s from the heat, sun screen, etc.).

Anyway, we just traveled up to Ohio to visit the family, and while I tried to avoid the obvious dairy in foods, I, no doubt, did eat some. He seemed to do okay. His night time sleep was good, naps a little spotty (but he finally cut that second tooth).

The last day we were there (Sunday), I ate some Chinese food! It was delicious! But that night, Ben was very uncomfortable. He never woke up, but was rolling around in his sleep ALOT and making little grunting noises. . He woke up the next morning with a big spot of eczema on his forehead. We came home yesterday, and the car ride was just horrible. He was obviously uncomfortable.

So, my question is… do you think it was the Chinese food he was reacting to or a possible buildup of the dairy? I’m leaning toward the Chinese food, as he seems so much better today. He slept nearly 13 hours last night!!! and the spot on his forehead is already fading. And I know I ate some dairy, as we stopped at McD’s on the trip home, and their fries have it in them.

And, what about the Chinese food would cause such a reaction? Obviously the soy, but I’m just so surprised by this, as he seems to be doing okay with the hidden dairy.

Naomi,

It could also be the MSG that was in the Chinese food. I know that there are many people who can’t tolerate it and I am sure it was in the food. It is almost next to impossible to find a Chinese place that doesn’t use MSG. Just a thought.

Yea, I too always ask for it with out MSG.. it just isnt good for you anyway. I was wondering if you got fried rice? maybe the egg? Or have you been eating soy all along? maybe their was some soy sauce or something of that sort in the food? if soy sauce isnt really soy then forget i said that 😉 . but maybe some kind of soy..

I’m stumped myself. I’m sure there was soy in it, and I haven’t consciously been eating soy, but I’m sure I’ve had it here and there while traveling. I think it must have been the MSG though. I did have Chinese food one other time before this trip, and this place advertises that they don’t use MSG, and Ben didn’t react so badly then.

McDonald’s officially has to say that their fries have milk in them because their seasoning supplier can’t guarantee that the seasoning won’t have milk every time. However, Kaelyn still reacts to other exposures to dairy (when we slip up), but she has never reacted to fries from McDonald’s. So…. I am guessing that it’s the soy or MSG. I am allergic to soy, but rarely react. Yet, I get hives every time we eat Chinese food.

Interesting Kim! I guess the only way I’ll know for sure is to try it again… but I’m not up for that for awhile!

my bet would be on the MSG…or possible some soy you didn’t realize was in there. Soy is a staple part of the asian diet so I wouldn’t be surprised if even some sauce had it.
