Our Paige has been constipated regularly for the last few months, and is only on Neocate as she cannot tolerate any solids yet. I was wondering if any of you moms with severe MFPI or FPIES babies had any suggestions for constipation remedies. We’ve been using glycerine suppostories when needed, but I don’t think she really gets “cleaned out” so to say. I think she only manages to pass the hardest part of the BM, but is still pretty backed up and uncomfortable, and then it really affects her sleep.
I’m hesitant about oral laxatives just for fear that it will aggrivate her MFPI, but if you guys know of some that worked well and didn’t upset your little ones system, I would be thrilled to hear about it!! I’ve been looking for Fleet BabyLax liquid glycerine suppositories, but haven’t been able to find it here, maybe it’s not available in Canada… not sure. I would love any suggestions! I just want to get her comfortable again, so we can all sleep a bit better.August 12, 2007 at 8:36 pm #40953AnonymousInactiveWe are just on Neocate only and our Gi prescribed Lactullose and it works very well. We only use as needed. Maybe you can talk to your ped about it. It’s a type of sugar or something like that. We also belive kendra has some serious allergies and she cannot tolerate any solids either. we had an endoscopy done and it showed inflamation in her lower intenstines. we are wating for the biopsy results. I hope that helps.

August 13, 2007 at 10:42 am #40974AnonymousInactiveI’ve used Benefiber with great success and no side effects for Myles. I think Lori uses (or used) it for Hailey as well. A mom on the board said she saw nurses using it for preemies in the NICU, so I imagine it’s quite safe. And it’s completely odorless, tasteless and not gritty. She won’t even taste notice it in her bottle. I used 1/4 teaspoon for Myles and most days that worked. If not I went up to 1/2 teaspoon.

August 13, 2007 at 2:13 pm #41001AnonymousInactiveWe used 1 tablespoon of karo syrup in every bottle.
August 14, 2007 at 8:53 am #41020AnonymousInactiveI had chronic constipation issues with Sarah. She always had hard little “rocks” in her diaper and seemed to struggle passing them. I tried everything under the sun…prune juice, benefiber…nothing seemed to work. Finally after we started weaning Sarah off zegerid, her poos became more “normal” and squishy! I guess it was her PPI causing the chronic constipation! I wouldn’t have taken her off the PPI because she REALLY needed it, but it was interesting to figure out! Since she’s not on solids, do you think it could be her PPI dose?
August 14, 2007 at 9:15 am #41022AnonymousInactiveFunny Sarah, b/c I’ve often wondered if Hailey’s chronic constipation is due to her PPI. We still need to give her benefiber AND miralax, and still her poops are on the hard side and hard to pass sometimes. Unfortnuately, we’re not approaching toilet training time, and I don’t know how I’m going to train her when it’s impossible for her to poo!
BTW, I LOVE Sarah’s new picture! Adorable.August 17, 2007 at 1:51 pm #41285AnonymousInactiveThank you all for your input! I really appreciate it.
Well, on Sunday I started putting a teaspoon of brown sugar in a couple bottles per day but she was still pretty backed up. After a few miserable days I went and got some lactulose (don’t need a prescription for it here) and started with that on Wednesday. In the meantime we have still been using glycerine suppositories to help he pass the hard BMs. Well the last 2 nights have been awful!! Wednesday night she was so uncomfortable that the only way I could get her to settle and have any sleep at all was on my chest, so I slept semi-propped up on the couch with her tossing and turning on me all night. Last night was the same, but my dear husband wanted to give me a decent night’s rest so he spent the same kind of night on the couch with her.Today I got in to see our ped and he thinks she may have some kind of sugar sensitivity/intolerance as well, so the brown sugar and lactulose could be just making her already oversensitive gut worse. So we discussed trying a motility drug with our options being Reglan, Motilium, or Erythromycin. I don’t really want to start Reglan, and we’re afraid of messing up her “good bacteria” balance in her gut with the erythromycin, so we are going to try Motilium (also called domperidone). Oh boy – wish us luck! We could sure use some sleep in this house.August 17, 2007 at 8:37 pm #41301AnonymousInactiveGood luck Sherri! I hope that this works for her.
August 20, 2007 at 2:01 pm #41432AnonymousInactiveSo far we haven’t seen any improvement on the domperidone, and I’m somewhat discouraged. I can’t use any suger-based laxative remedies, and I’m not wanting to try Benefiber because it contains some gluten (wheat protein) and I can’t seem to find Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) here. I’m getting frustrated! Perhaps I’ll look into MOM (milk of magnesia) but the last time I gave her something similar to MOM she has mucousy stools within 24 hour of a single dose.
Lori – where were you able to find Miralax here in Canada? Perhaps I could get it off Ebay…Any other suggestions, I would be so happy to hear them!August 20, 2007 at 3:20 pm #41434AnonymousInactiveAfter doing some research I’m going to try Magnolax! Here are the ingredients, just in case anyone is having a hard time like we are in treating constipation in a highly MFPI and sugar intolerant/sensitive baby.
Magnolax Original Vanilla:magnesium hydroxide (60 mg/mL)mineral oil (0.25 mL/mL)glycerineethyl vanillinwaterIt appears to me to contain no proteins, no sugars, no artificial flavourings, and no dyes. Please, please let this work without causing any additional problems. Paige is so uncomfortable she can barely sleep, so we can barely sleep. After nearly 9 months of this I think I’m beginning to lose it.August 20, 2007 at 7:55 pm #41448AnonymousInactiveOh Sherri… I’m so sorry that you are STILL struggling with this. Poor Paige too! I hope that the Magnolax works for you. I’ve never heard of it myself.
It’s interesting to me that you can’t find the Miralax in Canada. I wonder why. It just recently went OTC in the states.August 21, 2007 at 10:01 am #41476AnonymousInactiveUgg..you must be so frustrated. I hope the Magnolax works.
