I think I’ve set a record this week posting almost everyday but it seems like right when we get one thing figured out, here comes another!!! So, we got the sleep thing figured out for the most part. We decided to go with The Sleepeasy Solution which is really great for us and so far Kate has been napping in her crib since yesterday. It’s a start!!! The naps are short, but we’ll get there.
Today when I was changing Kate’s diaper I saw a small amount of bright red streaky blood. WHAT THE HECK????? I’ve added dairy consistently(hidden and real)for over a month. I don’t get it you guys!!! This is the FIRST time she has EVER had blood in her poop despite all of my previous incorrect assumptions about her having MSPI. If it’s blood, is this a good indication that it’s MSPI? If so, can I keep bf? Just totally rule out dairy? I’m so exasperated. I need a BREAK!!!! My baby needs a break! Is this possible that MSPI’s been hiding for the last months and just decided to show itself? Thanks guys.August 6, 2007 at 12:50 pm #40568AnonymousInactiveClaire,
You poor thing, you are definately on a rollercoaster. I am sorry that I have no suggestions, but if it truely is blood then it probably is a dairy thing. If you think you can live without dairy for a while then I would say go ahead and keep bf. But I gave up b/c I was a wimp with my dairy. I hope other bf mom’s can give you some better help.August 6, 2007 at 1:18 pm #40570AnonymousInactiveOh no! Other than being from an allergy, it is possible that it’s due to a fissure or even a virus. Was her poop hard? If so, then it could have been a fissure.
August 6, 2007 at 1:57 pm #40575AnonymousInactiveYeah, I’d check and see if she may have a tiny tear before you assume it’s dairy and MSPI. This happend with Myles once and I was petrified but then I noticed a tiny little tear. He had a tendency to be constipated and pass hard stools, so that’s what caused it for him.
If it’s not that then I’d cut out all dairy for a while and see if it stops.Great news about her sleeping in her crib. I hope she continues to make progress in that area!August 6, 2007 at 2:41 pm #40579AnonymousInactiveOkay so I took her to our ped and she looked at the diaper and thinks it’s a fissure. She says she has seen fissures in babies even if they don’t have hard stools which is so weird. I guess they just push really really hard? Anyway, she said it was streaky and if it was ALL throughout the poop, given Kate’s lack of MSPI symptoms up untill this point,THEN she would suspect dairy. But she really thinks it’s just a fissure. Ugh,cross your fingers for me…again!
August 6, 2007 at 4:07 pm #40587AnonymousInactiveOh, that’s a relief. That’s what I thought it probably was. Did she give you any advice on how to treat the fissure. I just put some antibiotic ointment on Myles but I don’t know if that was the right thing to do or not. Someone here once said to use baking powder…I think anyway. I’m just curious what the doc said about it.
I hope all is well now.

She said to put vasoline on her tushy after a diaper change just for some lubricant and to give her a good soak in the bath pretty often. Well, she has a bath every night as part of her bedtime routine(bath, books, lullaby,(sung out of tune my mommy)bed)so we’ve got that covered. Tonight I put some vasoline on her tush and when she pooped next there was no blood put I’m not sure if that says anything. With a dairy allergy is there blood in the poop ALL the time or is it just sporatic? I don’t get it. Anyway, we’ll give it a whirl and hope for the best!!August 6, 2007 at 7:15 pm #40596hellbenntKeymasterinstead of vasoline, I like
I didn’t think it was mspi either…but hey keep your eye on thingsAugust 6, 2007 at 8:43 pm #40599AnonymousInactiveHey Claire,
This happened once with my Claire , and the doctor suggested the same routine as yours but also said that maybe adding some baking soda to the bath water would help.I wouldn’t guess it’s MSPI either, as I would think it would be more frequent and maybe not even bright red either, as it would have traveled through the digestive system more. Also, didn’t she just have a scope done and no allergies???August 7, 2007 at 4:07 am #40618AnonymousInactiveThanks girls. Yep,she had a scope but with babes this young our G.I said it’s really too unreliable to test for allergies. The scope was clear though so I would imagine if she had a full blown terrible untreated allergy, the scope would have been different I’m not sure. We get the results of the biopsies and her blood tests today so hopefully everything is okay there. Here’s hoping!!!
August 7, 2007 at 5:55 pm #40663AnonymousInactiveGlad to hear it’s just a fissure. I know it’s still a pain in the butt (and I mean that literally and figuratively!), but at least it’s not MSPI. Both my kids have had fissures… Sarah even gets them when she has soft poop, not sure why. Hope it heals quickly.
