Ben has had small bumps on his arms for a month or so now. They really look like acne. I haven’t really been worried about them, as they seemed to really appear around the start of summer, and with the sweat, sunscreen, and the increased floor time, I just figured they were irritated. They have seemed to get better and then get worse, but I’ve not been able to tell why, either way.
I also have some bumps like these on the back of my upper arms, and so does Claire. It’s almost like they are just some blocked pores. Again, another reason I wasn’t worried about Ben’s.Well, I just started to eat some hidden dairy on Sunday, and I’m afraid that the bumps are getting worse. DH thinks it’s all in my head, and it totally could be , but I’m being super vigilant with the addition of the hidden dairy. He has not had his usual reaction (fussy and then the diarhhea) that he had with all the other trials, so I was really happy that we might actually be able to do it this time. But the arm bumps have me worried. He also got a few teeny tiny ones on his forehead today too. There are so many things that this could be, I’m trying not to freak out about it and give the hidden dairy some more time, but I just wondered if you all had seen something like this on your little ones and knew if was likely an intolerance reaction.Should I keep up with the trial? AAAHHH! I’m so ready to really eat again!!!July 25, 2007 at 9:10 pm #39868AnonymousInactiveHi Naomi,
I’m not sure about the dairy trial, I’ll let someone else talk to that, but it sounds to me like the bumps on your, Claire, and Ben’s arms may be irritated/clogged hair folicals. I have them too and have had my dermatologist look at them, they come more in the warmer weather (from, like you said, the heat, sweat, lotions irritating them) and they’re little tiny red bumps on my upper arms, mainly on the side & back of the arm. My doc told me I could use an alpha hydroxy lotion to help get rid of them (although I’ve gotten lazy with that!), but that it’s nothing serious. I’m not sure what, if anything, you could use on the kids, though. I’m thinking the bumps on Ben’s arms may just be this too, but you’d have to judge that yourself as I don’t know anything about bfing anymore!!Hope this helps!July 26, 2007 at 9:40 am #39879AnonymousInactiveNaomi,
I have this on my arms and our dermatologist said it’s called keratosis- basically blocked follicles I think. Sarah has them on her cheeks, and gets it in the winter and the summer sunscreen season. I’m not sure what it is, but if it’s any comfort, neither of us have food allergies that I know of.July 26, 2007 at 12:00 pm #39888AnonymousInactiveI have the same bumps. Mine never go away and my mom says I was born with them. I was told it has something to do with the way the skin grows and sheds on the upper arm or something like that. it is almost like I always have goose bumps on my upper arms. I know adults can do lotions (I can’t think of the names they are prescription), but I have never liked the smell of any so I just deal. I don’t have any food allergies either so I would just guess that he has the same bumps that you and Claire have.
July 26, 2007 at 1:56 pm #39897AnonymousInactiveBLESS YOU ALL!!!! This is exactly what I was hoping to hear! I’m going to stick with the hidden dairy trial for a little longer and see what happens. Hopefully, the bumps are just what you all have mentioned. They seem nearly non existent in the mornings, but after a day of crawling around on carpet, sweating, etc., they are pretty irritated by the end of the day. We’ll see how the next few days go.

I have those bumps too, and I don’t have any food allergies that I know of. I hope it’s just the hair follicle thing like everyone said.Good luck with your dairy trial!August 18, 2007 at 3:11 pm #41345AnonymousInactivehttp://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s197/njb21/arm.jpg
Sorry to revisit this again. Here are two pictures of the bumps. These were taken after his bath and at night, so they are a little more irritated than normal. When he wakes up, they aren’t red at all. They are not going away, not spreading on his arms, but now I am seeing them on the backs of his ankles!I’m getting worried that it’s a food thing again, though I can’t figure out what it would be.August 18, 2007 at 7:04 pm #41355AnonymousInactiveMyles still gets outbreaks that look just like that on his cheeks. I am quite sure it’s eczema.
August 18, 2007 at 8:09 pm #41364AnonymousInactiveThis is not what you want to hear, but that’s what Kaelyn’s allergy rash looked like. Of course, it could be just regular old eczema as well.
August 19, 2007 at 2:27 pm #41384AnonymousInactiveKim, I guess it doesn’t really matter, but do you know if this rash appeared for all the foods she reacted to or just a particular one? The reason I ask is that when this rash appeared I hadn’t really added anything new. It showed up in June and the closest “scary food” that I had added into MY diet was soy oils, but that was back in April!! And did her rash stay mainly on the arms, like his?
I have taken him to the ped. for other skin concerns and always get the eyebrow raise and head shake when I suggest that it is food related. I have asked about allergy testing too, and his ped. wouldn’t even consider it for his age.ARG!August 19, 2007 at 8:56 pm #41397AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure if the rash was related to any one food. It didn’t show up when we first introduced the foods, but gradually worsened after repeated exposures to milk and wheat and went away after we cut all of the foods out of her diet. Our ped kept brushing me off when I would mention my concerns as well. I think he finally agreed to testing just to shut me up.
