Hooray!!!
My better half took Brady to a neighboring state to visit the pediatric GI this morning for Brady’s reflux. He immediately upped him to 15mg 2x per day (I had asked the ped to do that, but what do I know, I am just a mom who has read everything she can get her hands on and observed her child’s response to the first dosage… errrrrr). He agreed that kids metabolize quicker and need higher doses more frequently.Interestingly, he also explained that the 30-60 minute dosing before meals is based on data collected on adult subjects. He explained that there is no current data to support that requirement in babies. Since they graze all day, he advised to dose Brady when it is convenient – like before his first AM feed and like 10-12 hours later, but not worry if it is not 30 minutes before he eats (as his tummy will usually have something left over in it anyway, especially for the afternoon dose). That was a big relief for me.The ped GI also advised to add 1 tsp of rice cereal to every ounce of formula, which we will try. I’ve read mixed things about adding rice, and know that it causes some babies to be gassier, so we will give it a whirl and cease and desist if he becomes gassy/uncomfortable.We’re really excited and optimisitic for some additional improvement for Brady!!!!!July 23, 2007 at 10:42 am #39739AnonymousInactiveWhat fantastic news!!! That is wonderful!! I hope you start to see a real turn around soon! Way to stick with it mommy!!!
July 23, 2007 at 10:52 am #39740AnonymousInactiveThat is awesome news! I’m so glad you found such a good doctor! I hope you start to see an improvement very soon. Good luck!
July 23, 2007 at 12:17 pm #39742AnonymousInactiveThere was a time we didn’t know about the 30 minute rule. Mom’s just gave meds whenever. Marci-kids did do some research in this area and they did find that it works better if you wait. If you notice it not working then you could always go to timing it. Good luck.

July 24, 2007 at 11:05 pm #39833AnonymousInactiveThat’s great news! What PPI is Brady on? My son Brian is on Prevacid solutabs 22.5 mg daily and I’ve been wondering if he needs to go to 30 mg daily. Hope you get great resuls on the new dose!
July 25, 2007 at 7:29 am #39840AnonymousInactiveGreetings, Kelly,
Brady is on Prevacid solutabs, 15mg 2x/day. He only started the second dose 2 days ago, but we are keeping our fingers crossed!!! 🙂He’s 13lbs 9oz at this point, and 15mg was just not doing the trick. Thanks also to everyone for the kind words and well wishes!KarenJuly 25, 2007 at 11:57 am #39845AnonymousInactiveThanks for the info! My son Brian was born on 5/10/07 so they are about the same age. Brian weighs 12 lbs something I think (he hasn’t been weighed in about two weeks). I am curious to know how Brady does on the higher dose so please keep us posted.
Also, do you mind if I ask how much he is sleeping and what time you put him to bed at night? I don’t know anyone else whose baby is close in age to Brian to have some kind of ballpark for what is “normal” at this age, esp for a reflux baby. I know they’re all different but I just like to know what other babies this age are doing. Thanks!!July 25, 2007 at 12:06 pm #39846AnonymousInactiveI’ll definitely keep you posted on how he responds to his meds.
Up until about a week ago, Brady was a 6, 10, 2, 6, 10, 2 eater. Then he started sleeping through his 10pm. Last week, he started to sleep 7-9 hour stretches through the night. We would put him down at around 9, and he would last until 4-6am. He napped in 1-2 hour stretches for a daily average total of around 14 hours. That all changed Monday. The littlest thing throws this guy off course, and going 1.5 hours away to the specialist wreaked havoc on his schedule. He slept very restlessly that evening, and yesterday would not nap at all. I think he got about 10 hours total sleep yesterday, and was a total crank by evening. We also had a mother’s helper start yesterday, which further threw him off. While he enjoyed playing with her, it was another change…Last night, he slept from 9:45-3, and was a bear to get down at 9:45. Today, he’s enjoyed a 2 hour nap and is on his second nap (about 45 mins), but the only way I can get him to nap is in my Mamma’s Milk sling on me!!!!! 🙂 It’s worth it, because if he sleeps good for his naps, he sleeps better at night… bizarre, I know. You would think you could tucker them out and they would sack out all night, but not so for him. -
