Do any of your refluxers have really bad yellowed teeth? My older son Luke had really bad reflux and his teeth are very damaged and I am trying to figure out if it is due to reflux. It is hard to believe as bad as it is that it could be due to not brushing. We do try to brush nightly, but do miss some nights. Like I said though it is hard to believe it could be due to that.
Thanks as always ladies.July 14, 2007 at 9:59 am #39209AnonymousInactiveYes it could be from reflux. I think I’ve read that. Was he on meds? I know some meds have been linked to tooth discoloration?? Hmmm, sorry can’t help more!

I wasn’t sure if it was all due to some kind of gingervitis (sp) or something, but after posting this I found a blister in the inside of Justic’s mouth and now think it might be hand foot and mouth disease. Not sure why Luke’s is not coming out in blisters though. I do think the yellowing is either the prevacid or the reflux because his teeth came in yellow and just kept getting worse. His teeth are horrible. I mean it is really bad. Hopefully his adult teeth won’t come in like that too.

The blister in Justice’s mouth makes me think it must be an infection or virus of some sort. On the positive side, if Luke’s adult teeth come in discolored also there are TONS of things that dentists can do nowadays. While it might cost money, I’m sure it won’t have to be a permanent problem. Hang in there!

For some bizarre reason when a small child has their first outbreak they get the sores inside their mouths and it can effect the gums as well. Thank God it does pass, but it’s miserable while they have it. After the first outbreak they generally will only get sores on their lips, not inside their mouths.
The yellow teeth could be something called enamel dysplasia (sp?). In some children and adults the enamel on the teeth begins to deteriorate or something and the underlying tooth color which is actually yellowish in color begins to show. I don’t know a whole lot about it but here’s some info on it.
I tried to find some other links for you but I couldn’t find the ones I was thinking of. I’d probably take Luke to the Dentist. I think they are supposed to have their first dental check up by age 3 or 4 anyway. Good luck.July 16, 2007 at 12:18 pm #39316AnonymousInactiveWas Luke treated with a lot of antibotics as a young baby? A lot of antibotics can cause discoloration of teeth. My husband’s teeth are very yellow and it is due to childhood antibotics, he use to get scarlet fever all the time along with ear infections. (Go figure, why my girls have tubes and tonsil issues?)
July 16, 2007 at 6:45 pm #39343AnonymousInactiveit’s probably a good idea to get into a dentist so you will know if it is anything to be concerned about. teeth can be discolored by several different things. we have taken sylvia to a pediatric dentist.
sylvia has enamel hypoplasis. for some reason the enamel on her teeth did not form right. i don’t know how many people have asked me if she took alot of meds or if it was the acid reflux that damaged her teeth. she was only on antibiotics once before her surgery and she did not cut her first tooth until 3 days after her surgery.
did luke’s teeth come in yellow, or did they come in normal looking and then turn yellow over time?sylvia’s bottom front teeth were etching away on the sides and the top front teeth had brown ridges across the front of them. she had 12 teeth that needed work—6 of them have stainless steel crowns. i was afraid it was my fault because she had been on pediasure in a bottle for so long, but the dentist told me her teeth looked clean.July 17, 2007 at 12:46 pm #39418AnonymousInactiveWith my older boys, I learned that it usually starts with the back teeth being bad because the acid can come all the way up and wash the back teeth, if you will. If they are not on enough meds to control the acid, it can damage the esophogus and many of the teeth. We got a script for restoring teeth rinse – I think they are OTC now and quite available. It may be difficult for a 3 year old to do this without swollowing it, tho. I would definately take him to your dentist and see what he thinks. Some kids just have yellow looking teeth. When Talon was about 12 we did the white strips on his teeth. See what the dentist says.
July 20, 2007 at 10:11 am #39617AnonymousInactiveLuke was given antibiotics as soon as he was born due to my water being broken for 3 days before he was born. He may have also been on them for one ear infection. Luke’s teeth came in a little yellow and then just kept getting worse. As far as not being on enough meds that was def. the case for Luke. The poor thing suffered with severe reflux for 9 months.
Thanks again ladies. I am planning to get him to a dentist soon. -
