I did not really care about table food at all, because Brian did not even take puree food before, I gave him cheerio to try when he was 9-10 month, he gagged and vomited, so I did not dare to try again. At around 11 month, ST recommade puff for him to try, he did ok, so I gave him puff before I fed him solid and formula, he did better after a few weeks of practice, then I gave him cheerio again when he was almost 1. Last Tuesday, we went to see OT from the feeding team, she had Brian to eat oyster cracker for the very first time, it suprised me that he handle it so well without gagging at all. Now he picks up the cracker, puff and feeds himself. I feed him anything that he can have during our dinner time (he eats at 3pm and 7pm, my dinner is 6pm), noodles, bread, frech fries, veggi, mince meat, he gags from time to time, but he does not vomit much since his stomace is empty at that time. He does not like to pick up any wet finger food at all. I really think that when they are ready they will do it, and just keep trying in the meantime.

I’m still paranoid about Noah eating these things because he has a mouth full of teeth and he bites off huge chunks and then doesnt know what to do. I freak out everytime I give him something other than purees.
I have a couple containers (unopened) of the Gerber puffs that I’m not going to use since Noah doesnt like them. Since they dont carry them in Canada, I would be more than happy to send them to you if you want to try them.
February 1, 2006 at 6:34 pm #481AnonymousInactiveThanks for the suggestions everyone. I went out and bought a bunch of snacks for her to try: veggie booty, rice cakes, veggie stix, natural cheezies. Unfortunately, I think that I’m the one who’s been eating more of them then her. She’s really not interested, but since she won’t go near a spoon these days and goes bezerk if I even put one on her tray for her to hold, I just put a few of these things out on the tray. She mostly plays with them. Then I dip a biter biscuit in some pureed food and let her feed it to herself…mostly ends up on her clothes, but at least she’s not screaming to get out of the chair.
Lisa- Thank you so much for the offer, but I think it would be quite expensive to mail the puffs (probably more than they cost themselves)! I’ve asked my mother (who lives in CO) to bring some with her the next time she comes along with some wagons to try, and a whole list of other things from the pharmacy. Thank you again. After seeing how poorly Hailey is doing with solids these days, I realize that we’re in no rush. I don’ think she’ll be ready for them for some time. BTW, have you guys started feeding therapy yet? If so, how did it go? How’s Noah doing otherwise?
February 2, 2006 at 2:50 pm #536AnonymousInactiveLori,
I just got back from a 4 hour feeding therapy evaluation today. It’s pretty detailed so I’ll post later on today under “feedings”.
I hope Hailey is doing well.
