Hi everyone,
I just posted for the first time last week, concerning my son Nathan. With me on the TED and also increasing his Prevacid dose (we had some solutabs leftover from Baron’s prescription and decided to go up to 7.5 mg twice a day until Nathan’s next ped appointment in 2 weeks), he was starting to do better. He even took a 2-hour nap in his BED – not the swing – last Friday!! I was just getting ready to start adding different foods back to my diet – after 2 weeks of TED.Then Saturday came, and Nathan came down with roseola. He has little red speckles all over him. Baron had it last week so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. But the worst is that now Nathan’s reflux is back in full force!! It’s like I’m not even doing the TED, and the Prevacid seems to be no match for the reflux now. He has been crying all day without any naps other than little cat naps. What is going on? Seems like I’ve read other moms say that an illness can cause a reflux setback, but why is this? It’s just SO frustrating because we’re doing everything we can and we feel like we’re back to square one!!! If it’s not the roseola, I am completely confused and feel like giving up 🙁Thanks for any info/advice you can give!PaulaJuly 9, 2007 at 4:24 pm #38893AnonymousInactiveI don’t have any advice for you, just want to send you a great big. And tell you I sure hope it is the rosella and that he starts feeling better very soon.

I’m so sorry! Roseola, YUCK!!! At least you know what it is. I remember when Claire had this, and I totally freaked out with the scary high fever and then the rash. Scared me to death. As for the reflux flare. Yes, I have to agree that reflux does react to almost every possible thing that it can. The only thing that I’ve been able to figure is that his body’s defense system is too busy fighting the roseola that there’s just not enough left over for dealing with the reflux. Not very scientific, huh?How far into the roseola is he? Once they get the rash, the fever is over, right? I can’t remember if the rash is itchy or not? Hopefully, within a few days, he will be feeling better, and things will calm down for you again.July 9, 2007 at 9:35 pm #38915AnonymousInactivePaula,
Man you guys need a break!! I have no experience or advice concerning roseola(Kate hasn’t gotten it yet, I’m crossing my fingers!!) but I will tell you that reflux for Kate flared BIG time when she had a UTI. It was terrible. It was as if she was on no meds but the good things is, thanks to these mommies, I knew that so I TRIED not to freak out too much I’m not sure why it does though…….. I really hope your sweet baby gets better soon! I send you healthy vibes!!!! Good for you for adding things back into your diet. It was so nice to have salad again after almost a month of the same old rice and turkey. Boring!!!! Did you pinpoint an intolerance? Just curiousJuly 11, 2007 at 9:36 am #39001AnonymousInactiveThank you for the feedback. Nathan’s reflux is still REALLY bad, but hopefully the roseola will completely clear his system in the next few days. He has no fever and the rash doesn’t itch, so that’s a good thing. I’m also trying not to panic and keep telling myself that we will get back to where we were before the roseola hit….hopefully sooner rather than later.
About the TED — I saw such big improvement within the first few days that I know something in my diet was hurting Nathan. I’m almost certain that hidden dairy foods are one culprit because my older son is milk protein intolerant. I also suspect maybe soy, nuts, and berries are bothering Nathan. As of right now, I’m still on strict TED with the addition of oats, raisins, avocados, and white beans. I had added all of those foods in before he came down with roseola, and I saw no problems at all. Then I added back apples a day or two before he got roseola and his reflux flared, so I removed apples again just in case they played a role….if he can ever get back to doing better, I’ll add in maybe corn and then wheat next. Right now, though, it would be impossible to tell if they bother him because he’s refluxing so bad anyway 🙁
July 11, 2007 at 8:27 pm #39033AnonymousInactivePaula, I just noticed your signature and Nathan’s Prevacid dose seems pretty low. If you don’t notice him improving once the Roseola clears up, I would look into getting his dose upped. We had to do this several times in the early days with Ben, but he’s been on the same dose for quite some time now.
July 12, 2007 at 10:30 am #39057AnonymousInactiveThanks, I will definitely do that. I’m afraid Nathan’s pediatrician won’t be willing to increase it much, but we’ll see when we go for his 2-month check-up in less than 2 weeks.
I don’t know if I should’ve done this, but I actually increased Nathan’s dose to 7.5 mg twice a day (using leftover solutabs from my older son’s prescription) just a few days before Nathan came down with roseola. It seemed to be helping a good bit. I just wanted to see how he did on this dose before begging the doctor to increase the presription. I checked out the Marci kids website also, and I believe Nathan could be on a dose as high as 7.5 mg three times a day (he weighs about 11 lbs). I’m thinking I’ll give the roseola a couple more days, then call the doctor if the reflux doesn’t improve.
Thanks again,PaulaJuly 13, 2007 at 4:22 pm #39171AnonymousInactiveHi, Paula,
I’m sorry you are struggling with Roseola on top of the reflux! My son is the same age as yours (born May 1, ’07), and while he has not had Roseola, when he went for his 2 month vaccinations, I noticed that his reflux became incredibly aggravated after that. He ran a fever for a few days and was very uncomfortable, so he did have a mild reaction to the shots.I have a hunch that any time their immune systems are under attack (illness, vaccinations), it may leave them vulnerable.I hope that as his roseola improves, so does the reflux! We are still struggling to get Brady back on track a week and a half after the shots.Good luck, and keep us posted! -
