Eli had his scope today. Never mind that the OR was running 1.5 hrs. behind(torture for a breastfed baby that was NPO for 5 hrs). I was hoping to hear that everything looked fine. Not the case….doc. said that the esophagus did not appear inflammed but that the small intestine had little nodules that they often see in food allergy. I am sooo frustrated and feel so defeated. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle with trying to continue to breastfeed. Doc. said biopsies will be back on Tues. but our new doc. is on vacation next week so I don’t know what we will be doing.
I am so worried about the possiblility of having to wean to an elemental formula. We tried to give him Neocate a couple of times…..it was TERRIBLE. Has anyone had to wean an older exclusively(no bottles) breastfed baby?July 6, 2007 at 7:44 pm #38737AnonymousInactiveI don’t have any advice, but gosh I feel so badly for you guys. You are such a trooper and I sure hope that you don’t have to wean… I know that will be a bear. Best of luck.
July 6, 2007 at 7:56 pm #38738AnonymousInactiveI don’t have any ideas but I have heard that it can be almost impossible. I really feel for you.
July 6, 2007 at 8:06 pm #38739AnonymousInactiveWhy would you need to wean due to allergies? You can always eliminate from their diet what it is they are allergic to. You can do TED that Dr. Sears recommends or just keep a food journal. I think some women even take one food out at a time. For my son that I am bfing I kept a food journal and realized everytime I had dairy or beef he broke out and the reflux was worse. I also did TED, but did it after I knew about the beef and dairy. So, it didn’t help, but I know it has helped other moms to figure out what was the culprit.
July 6, 2007 at 8:53 pm #38742AnonymousInactiveI am sooo sorry you feel so discouraged but I don’t blame you one bit. This is so hard The hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through in my life. I agree with Shelby. I would definately try doing TED before trying a formula. As a fellow bf mommy, I suspected Kate also had an allergy so I did two weeks milk and soy free and almost a month on TED. TED isn’t meant for long term though so if you don’t see results after a couple of weeks I would chuck it. It’s really really hard but for me it was definatley worth the overdose of turkey and potatoes. For us, it turned out Kate just has an immature digestive system b/c her only issue was mucousy stools and the TED didn’t do a darn thing but I know it has REALLY been helpful for a lot of other moms to try and pinpoint the intolerance. If you really want to continue bf, and it sounds like you do, I would exhaust all option b/f turning to formula which isn’t always an automatic fix. It can make things harder sometimes too but them again it also has helped a ton of babes here. Every baby is different I send you a big internet HUG and hope that things will get better. I totally relate to your frustration with those procedures and delaying feeding. Kate’s been through three and each time they would say it would start and a certain time and go WAY past that so her poor belly was just aching. TERRIBLE!!!!! Okay, I’m done blabbing. Hang in there, things will turn around I KNOW it!!!!
July 6, 2007 at 10:53 pm #38751AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry to hear this. I hope that you can figure out what’s bothering him and will be able to continue breastfeeding. Good luck with everything.
July 7, 2007 at 1:30 pm #38768AnonymousInactiveI am sorry! I hope that you can figure out what he may be allergic to.
July 7, 2007 at 2:30 pm #38775AnonymousInactiveOh no! I’m sorry to hear the scope results, but hope that the biopsies come back clear. I’ve heard before sometimes they say that they suspect allergies, but the biopsies come back saying that it look fine at the cellular level. Good luck.

July 8, 2007 at 11:39 am #38832AnonymousInactiveOh, I’m so sorry to hear this.. I hope that the test results come back and that they don’t find any problems.
Keep us posted.July 9, 2007 at 2:55 pm #38880AnonymousInactiveI have heard the same thing as Lori. I will pray for you that the biopsies come back clean, but if for any reason they don’t, we will all be there for you!
July 9, 2007 at 3:03 pm #38882AnonymousInactiveI truly hope you can keep BF. God gives us this GREAT ability to feed our children the best food on the earth and then they can’t tolerate it. It is mindboggling to me. If you do have to switch to Neocate, we mix it with Rice Dream instead of water. The rice dream tastes like melted ice cream (sort of) and that is the only way Carson would take it. We mix it just as we mixed it with the water – only using rice dream. Our Peds GI and nutritionist said this was fine. Again, I hope everything comes back ok. So sorry you are going through this. Big Hugs!!
July 9, 2007 at 10:36 pm #38925AnonymousInactiveBrenda- I feel the same as you. I just can’t understand how my baby can’t tolerate my milk. Doc. thinks he may just not be able to tolerate whole proteins.
I could eat whatever (jalopenos, broccoli, cabbage, pizza with peppers etc) with my first three babies, didn’t bother them a bit. Now I worry if the milk that got on my hands, when I was making Abby a bowl of cereal, soaked into my skin. I wash my hands if I even touch a jug of milk or pack of cheese. At this point I’ve been off of milk, soy , beef and nuts for months. Cut out wheat and eggs for 2wks. with no improvement. Frustrating, frustrating…I hope Naomi is right. Maybe it just looks like allergies but will be ok. Biopsies will be back tomorrow.Sorry to ramble. Thanks for listening and all the replies. Oh and I got Eli to take 3oz of Neocate in a sippy cup yesterday and today. Just wanted to be prepared. He doesn’t mind it as much when it is slightly cool. Kinda smells like raw potatoes.July 10, 2007 at 11:14 pm #38989AnonymousInactiveBiopsies came back fine. Our nurse said there was absolutely nothing found by the pathologist. I feel so wonderful knowing that I am not causing his problems and we can continue to breastfeed. I was sooo worried when we got up this morning. Here I’ve been gearing myself up all weekend to have to wean him(worried that he had some kind of eosopholic issue) and when I looked down at him while he nursed, before we got out of bed, my heart was just breaking. His big blue eyes, blink blink..Well so now I think that the doc. that did the scope(our old doc.) was just looking for some sign of allergy. He told me to wean Eli twice because he thought that was the problem since the meds didn’t work 100%. I hope he saw the pathologist reportSo now we just need to figure out why Eli’s still not doing well. He seems to be doing a little better on the Nexium and we only have to give it once a day. As our nurse said, this is great news but still leaves us with the big ??? She’s going to call next wed. or thrus. when the doc. gets back.It seems that solids make his reflux sooo much worse. We’ve tried rice cereal twice and applesauce as a feeding once. He gets a tsp. of applesauce with the Nexium. I just hate it because he loves solids, they just don’t love him. Anyone had this problem? I am wondering if he does have DGE.So the roller coaster goes on….July 10, 2007 at 11:32 pm #38990AnonymousInactiveHip Hip Horray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carson did tolerate rice cereal as an infant but STILL does not tolerate applesauce. He has a very limited *food list*. I have a note on the frige that says: What CAN i feed Carson? And the list of foods is under. So, it would not surprise me if Elijah started out with only a very few foods also. Have you tried oatmeal instead of rice cereal? I also heard that instead of giving scary Reglan for DGE you could give Erythromycin – it can take a few weeks to kick in, but works well to help empty. It couldn’t hurt to try Erythromycin for 3 weeks to see if it helped. If it does, GREAT! If not, nothing hurt. We HAVENT tried it but I don’t hesitate to research things and then suggest them to my doc!!!I am SO VERY GLAD that the biopsies came out fine! Ours were too. Funny how we worry about things so much and then the good news comes – but now we still have questions. At least we know it could be worse had the results been different. So glad for you! -
