InactiveWell, we tried weaning Dagney off the meds, we’re back on the 30mg/day, and she seems to be just about stable again. (She seemed ok at 22.5mg/day, but once we went to 15 it was not so great, so we upped her bacck to the 30 to stabilize her) I know they usually say that most babies outgrow it between 9-12 months. Dagney is now 9 1/2 months, and back up to the full dose of Prevacid. We’ll probably start weaning again in a few weeks, but what happens if she hasn’t outgrown it at 1 year? Do docs usually then recommend doing additional diagnostic procedures? Dagney has only had the Upper GI done, which didn’t really show anything, and they did the poop test on her which didn’t show anything conclusive either… I’m just trying to prepare for what will happen at that visit if she hasn’t been able to wean off the Prevacid (she’s scheduled for another visit right before her 1st bday).

When I answered that they seemed to be doing a lot better, but that they were definitely still showing signs of reflux, he said that we should stick with their current meds and see how things were going at 15 months. Kaelyn had an upper GI done at 4 weeks old and no other tests. Alex never had any tests done. With both of them their symptoms and response to meds made it pretty clear that they had reflux, so the ped and ped GI didn’t feel like they needed to prove it with any tests.
July 2, 2007 at 11:17 pm #38465InactiveI think the general rule is 9/12/15/18 months for weaning. So I guess that’s trying about every 3 months. We definitely weren’t ready after trying at 9 months, but we seem to be doing OK now at 14 months. I’ve put the wean on hold while we’re doing milk…but I hope she’ll be fine when I continue again in a few weeks. Try not to be discouraged if Dagney doesn’t seem to fit the “timeline” for growing out of it. I KNOW how discouraging it can be when they “fail” a trial…but try to take it in stride. I know it was easier for me because at least Sarah was HAPPY and her reflux was under control, ya know? Even though the meds stink…at least we had it figured out. I hope Dagney grows out of it soon, but for your sanity try not to get hung up on a certain “age”. Good luck!
July 3, 2007 at 5:36 am #38470InactiveDon’t fret. Gabby is 11 months and nowhere near a wean in my opinion. I’m sure her GI will try to sway me otherwise, but I know she still refluxes. Some kids just take longer to grow out of it.

worked at 12 months, but we still gave zantac & tums as neededstill give tums here & there at 4yrs old…very infrequently though!July 3, 2007 at 12:13 pm #38480InactiveOur GI said that most outgrow it between 9-12 months when due to an immature LES. When do to intolerances, most outgrow it by age 2 we were told. I can’t remember the exact number, but it was something like 95 percent. For us, they said that 98 percent will outgrow it by age 3, and then if not, we’re likely stuck with it for life.
My advice would be not to worry, she’s still young, and most do outgrow it. We’ve yet to try a med weaning at over 2 years old.July 3, 2007 at 9:21 pm #38523InactiveThanks everyone! I’m not totally discouraged at this point. I never really planned to wean at 9 months, but then the GI suggested it, so I thought why not? We’ll try again maybe at 1 year. She wasn’t even very fussy when we lowered her dose, but she was coughing/clearing her throat a lot, a little uncomfy, and her naps were shortening. I still hear her refluxing now, which I didn’t even hear that before when things were fine, so once that stops, I’ll feel better. She’s just such a happy baby all the time that I don’t want to upset her unnecessarily…we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that it will work at 12 months!
July 4, 2007 at 8:58 am #38541InactiveWe weaned from meds for our first at 12 months. I was breast feeding and kept breast feeding for one more month as we didn’t want no meds + milk. Milk at 13 months went fine. My ped. tried to have us wean at 6 months, telling us most kids grow out of reflux at 6 months. It was a terrible experience. I thought “is she crazy, growing out of it at 6 months, I can’t imagine someone growing out of it at 6 months.
Then, with our 2nd, the day he turned 6 months he was miraculously better. I was off dairy as he was MPI, but other than that, it was like he was cured. We weaned off the meds by 6 and 1/2 months. After 2 and 1/2 pretty good months, I started eating dairy again. He seems ok (will be 10 months in a few days).I guess I have 2 points. One, each kid will be ready to wean at a different time. You sound calm about out. I’m sure you’ll figure out when she’s ready. Two, when you wean, try not to combine it with any other change in diet — i.e. at 12 months if you’re going to milk, etc.Good luck.July 5, 2007 at 12:08 am #38583InactiveCarson is almost 2 and still on meds. With my first two, Talon was almost 3 before we had all great days – and started to ween him. Jeremy was closer to 2 1/2 years.
I don’t think 12 months is a magic number by any means. I always got this feeling that our boys were doing *so great* and sleeping well for many, many days in a row. Talon started eating more foods with hardly any gagging. It just seemed that everything started to come together – I used to say – we rounded a corner.It is hard to describe, but I think you will just know in your heart that it is time.July 5, 2007 at 10:00 am #38612InactiveThanks, so much everyone! Dagney’s almost back to herself after dealing with the effects of the failed weaning. She still will cough and her eyes get all red when she does it, and i’m crossing my fingers that her naps will be back to normal soon…her morning one seems to have gotten back to 1 hr, but in the afternoon she wakes up very upset after 1/2 hour still, and then slightly cranky after that. I’m supposed to call the GI today, which I will do, but i’m telling her no more weaning till at least 12 months, and we’ll thinnk about it then!
July 5, 2007 at 10:35 am #38615InactiveDenise, I am so sorry that the wean did not work out for you right now. That’s great that she is almost back to her happy self though! I agree, give it a little more time and I have confidence that she’ll grow out of it soon. Just think…it took her a little while before you realized she wasn’t ready…so maybe since she didn’t have an IMMEDIATE reaction to lower meds, you’re almost there!! GOOD LUCK!
July 7, 2007 at 1:34 pm #38769InactiveIsaac is still on Prevacid and he is 2 yrs old. We have tried to wean in the past and the reflux is still very much so there. Our GI hopes that he will grow out of it by 3yrs old but thinks he may be a refluxer for life

A little update. Since Dagney failed the wean & seemed to have real pain when she was trying to eat food pieces other than formula or pureed stuff (during the wean and just following bumping her back up to the 30mg), her GI wants to do an endoscopy to find out if there’s another problem. I’m going to post this in procedures too, for more specifics, but they and my Pediatrician feel that she should be able to go below the 22.5mg/day and if she can’t there may be something else wrong. What do you all say about this? I assumed the GI would just say to try to wean again at 12 months, but they want to do the endoscopy fairly soon, which makes me a little nervous. I’ll post more in the procedures area to hopefully get more info/input on that. -
